@cavs25100 yeah and near and mello were crap compared to L, they had nothing on him, both as likeable characters and as detectives. L had basically worked out the whole entire case for them. A retarded monkey cud have came to the same conclusion they did especially already knowing about the shinigami, the deathnote, Light being a suspect and all the other crap to do with the case which L figured out. And it's because of all that that Mello found out the fake rule which lead to suspecting Light!

Lights character ruled, mischievously evil, smart about how he went about things -- L's death was a perfect victory, using Rem as a tool.

It indeed was a joint effort by mello and near to catch light, if light wouldn't have trusted mikami, he wouldn't have died. Never trust zealots. In fact, trust nobody but yourself in situations like that.

Only thing light suffered from was overconfidence. He kept thinkin' how much better he was then them. Keep a level head = win. Lose your cool = death.

I agree but then again I kinda thought that Light had a split personality. Kira comes out when ever Light thinks of the Death Note. That might be why Light always told L that he wasn't Kira because MAYBE Kira is a split personality for Light. Yet for L and the police it was a different story. It doesn't make sense that Light can act THAT good. If he was in plays and things like that then I would have thought differently. Yet, I hate Light either way.

Light says throughout the anime that he misses L and feels that the guy who replaces him can't hold a candle to L. You can also see the look in his eyes as he holds L when he dies, part of him is surprised and sad, but the other part is happy for his victory over L.

Near catches Light. L doesn't.

He says it even right before Near catches him, he sees Near wearing the L mask and says that he doesn't deserve to wear L's face. Near also doesnt catch him on his own, its thanks to mello's actions that Near is able to trap Light. So in reality Mello combined with Near is what caught Light. They also say this near the end of the anime.
