prolimatech pk-1 is actually the best ic7 sucks it doesnt spread for shit and scratches the hell out of ihs's. btw u want as little TIM as possible. a very thin amount that is spread across the whole IHS means u have good contact and if u have a slightly bowed baseplate for your heatsink u can apply alot of force(in some cases) when u mount it and u will have almost zero tim on your IHS cause the contact is so good. 90% isopropyl alcohol works great to clean off tim
I did everything like in the videos but mines keep turning green and powers up for about 1sec then turn yellow and shuts down and it start to flash 2 time the red light...any help plz thanx or did I do something wrong!??..
Hey this is a great video. What is the maximum temperature that you should apply to remelt the solder to reform the connections but without causing damage to the board? I have a hot air gun used for stripping paint but wondering if that is too hot? thanks great video :-)
What he is doing is called reflow and basically he is just heating the solder joints so the chip can make a stable connection. However, this repair is not permanent . The best repair is reball when you remove the GPU and put fresh solder balls and resolder back to the board.
No you can't use a hair dryer. They get to about 40-60oC. A heat gun gets to 350oC on low setting and 500oC+ on high. A hair dryer wont do a thing to the solder and this is what needs to melt to reflow.
the best way to fix this problem is to buy a new model instead of spending more money, mine broke 3 times already, first 2 times i did this fix and it sucked weeks later it came back,.after that i went to someone that replaces your gpu anf cpu and it went well for about 7 months spent 100 euros in this fix, and after 7 months it proke again i quit refixing it its just not worth it il just have to let it go, how unfortunate....
Want you just do a full fix and melt the solder and remove the chips and add new solder and reattach them and add pressure to bond, then add the thermal compound. The reason I say this is because your only temporarily fixing the problem with this method, once the console heats up again those cracks will reappear.
had my ps3 for 4 years no problems occurred only the ylod before 3 days:( i used the hair drier to fix it can anyone reply to me if doing that is bad for my ps3. thanks people.
@Quatre5555. Set to the medium temperature and hold about 2 inches away from the board for about 8 to 10 minutes. Do not keep it in the same spot for to long.
Person below do not worry the files you could not find only show up on the ps3 ok but i have a question how long does this last because mine lasted 4 days then 1 day then 3 min then dead forever
my hubby followed ur procedure but i guess where the unlucky ones who wouldn't make it work. anyhow, i just want to ask if we will lose all the files from our hard drive? i'm not really good at this stuff but i somehow understand. we bought sata cable to transfer the data. my laptop said it was successfully installed but i can't find it on my computer? Does that mean we lost our data??? please let me know i'm so desperate to get my files from my harddrive.
@pspvessel i did with a hairdryer and it work i just need the thermal paste and i am done cause i get the message that say "The system is too hot please turn it off for a while"
@shootemup081 You will lose the date and time, which you will have to re do. If you keep the backup power out, you will have to set the time and day, every time you start the PS3, plus all your settings for theme, and system will revert to default every time you start.
@shootemup081 watever u not gone lose ne of ur game saves if thats wat ur asking however if the ps3 keeps ylod during game play over time it could cause sum problems 4u but no u wont lose ur data after u unplug the bac up power supply
@gamelinx omg, i just had my ps3 for a month, and it has the YLOD now. i just woke up to play and now i cant anymore. absolute bullshit !!! breaks too fast.
My PS3 (60gb) kicks in in third speed after 30 min of playing GTA IV...it doesnt gets too hot and the air that blows is usually a little bit hot..should i apply new thermal paste??
use the low setting of 700*F, do not use the high setting of 1000*F for those of you wondering about the temps. Ive done this twice and has worked both times.
I have the same problem. But it is more then 150 dollars you have to pay. You also have to pay for shipment and it all adds about 188 bucks! New PS3 with 120 GB are only 300 dollars and the 40 GB you find it for 200 dollars. I am only fixing it so I can save all my data. I know it will break again. Thank you very much gamelinx for your video. It was very well done.
@Dreamst8r mine worked for a few months and now ylod again. It did work but I guess the length varies for others. I just dont wanna keep doing this so I'm switching to the slim hoping I doesnt have the same problems.
@Dreamst8r nice. data transfer took some time, I had to start it and go to bed and then check on it in the morning. cant wait to play again. busy week.
are you aware... you have to hop on over to "ps3bigskydownload" and get a hold of this game for undeniably complimentary. i have gamed it and it's actually a fine game. just google "ps3bigskydownload" and click the very first link. extremely expect everyone have pleasure in it!
Hey guys i ordered call of duty modern warefare 2 but i got the ylod today. What am i suppose to do. I am out of warranty and this looks hard to fix. I might try it out if i do how long will it last with fluxing it and thermal compounding it. I have brothers that play 8 hours a day on it. So should i send it to sony and pay them 150 bucks or should i fix it myself. Plese help me by replying to my comment or sending my a private message.
No. Only 2 squares. CPU and GPU. You will know which ones need the thermal compound, by seeing which ones have compound on them when you open up your system. Those 2 processors are the only ones that have thermal contact with the cooling unit fan.
He's doing this on a carpet and touching the parts with bare hands? Isnt that a rick of getting an electrostatic dishcharge? Or maybe thats not carpet i was watching this from my phone
A really bad video quality. My Kodak made it blurry. This was done in my garage, on concrete. Concrete is good with the heat gun, lol. Touching the motherboard is not bad, as long as you touch something to ground your body, if you had static, you would feel a shock when it leaves you.
i just got one at lowes for $20, but i asked them about thermal paste they said theyd never heard of it, any tips. Hopefully i can get this to work becuase i just got Assassins Creed 2 and it got the yellow light of death before i got to play it
Another name for it is "Thermal grease" and it will make sense to someone that works in Radio Shack, or Fry's Electronics. That paste will cost about $10 for the expensive 99% silver compound.
Nope, it booted up, and everything was the same, the only thing I had to do was set the time again, as if it was a new PS3. All your game saves and data should be backed up after you get it working again, just to be on the safe side.
