i like to follow the dog walker and see how he manages the pooper scoop on all those... oh, was on Lifetime Net , that explains why I never saw it maybe.. hmmm
I so loved this show when it was on; I wasn't in my 30s, wasn't in New York, and wasn't female, but I related so well to the overall theme of trying to find your place in a world that's moving so fast and you can't keep up. I was just out of college and trying to figure out what to do and how to do it, and what kind of life I wanted to live, and seeing that reflected on a TV show made me feel a little less desperate.
@mefault God yes, what a theme. And I like how the music and visuals work together and how the tune really, really captures New York, when you're walkin' along, feeling good, melancholy, and or reflective.
Glad to see fellow "To Hip forRoom" posters, like all of us. I am a Californian, and this program always made me feel like a New Yorker, just the theme song alone. WOW!
I was a kid when the show originally aired, but I have a few vague memories. IIRC it was on NBC Wednesday or Thursday nights, maybe? I think the reruns aired on Lifetime too, no?
I just remember one episode where she was caught shoplifting, then put her hands up, giving a nervous smile. The only other thing I remember is the smile she did while walking in the opening credits...(about 0:05 in)
I have about 30 episodes from the first 3 seasons. I don't think these would have a region since I'd be making them with my DVD recorder, but I am in the USA, so that means my equipment is NTSC.
Keep in mind that the 1st 3 seasons had about 45 episode, and I only have about 30. I could put 3 episodes on 1 DVD, and I'd need to get 10 USD per disc for my time + shipping. I've have done over 2,000 transaction on eBay, so you can be sure that I'm trustworthy. Let me know.
Thanks so much for putting this theme song on! I have dreamt about it, truly, and am so glad to find it here! I remember the show, and loved it. Gotta see if it's on DVD, yet...
"Too Hip for the Room" describes Molly Dodd. What a shame that this wonderful series never developed the audience it so deserved. One of the best shows of the late 80s/early 90s!
I always thought the violinist sounded like Stephan Grapelli. Whoever it was no doubt loved Grapelli and tried to make it sound like him, but I doubt if it was him. Not even sure if he was alive then, and if he was he must've been pretty old. I did find lots of full length versions or cover versions of that theme song, and some were pretty good, and about three minutes long, but none captured the feeling of the original. If anyone finds out who did that violin part, please post his name. Thanks!
Music makes me so lonely for NYC as I remember it in late 90s. Beautiful show, really had an authentic feeling, Molly was like a real person instead of all the characters on Tv today...
I remember this as being a great show, nice to sit back and get comfortable with. But I absolutely LOVED the opening theme. Does anyone know the artist that did it, or of any other work they recorded??
This was a terrific show. But has a music lover, I am still totally gassed by this show's theme song, written and arranged by the legendary Patrick Williams.
Some years ago, he wrote a tune titled "Too Hip for the Room." I don't know if he intended it, but the title describes this great composer!
The show depicted the life of Molly Dood (Blair Brown), a divorced woman living in New York, living a lifestyle that could be defined as both yuppie and bohemian. Molly seemed to drift from job to job and relationships to another; her warmth and emotional accessibility are the root cause of most of Molly's problem in life: strong character and depression. The same way that I felt on the earlies 90's. I love this comedy drama,, because represent myself.
I am always looking to see if they will release it. Nothing to date. If I ever hear anything I will immediately post here. As far as those of you who are not sure why it didn't do as well as SITC, it's an easy answer. Molly Dodd had the same problem Sports Night with Felicity Huffman had: It was too intelligent and the female lead was too strong. Blair Brown has been called the thinking man's bombshell and its true. But most people want a show that won't make them think. Enter reality TV!
I loved "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" also - Wonderful, Wonderful show- I really miss it - It's a shame that it's not available on VHS or DVD - I would be willing to buy as well
@kdanhen7 just found this , would like to see it on dvd too.. don't know how i missed back then, don't even remember seeing it and it was on four years apparently..
Get outta here! You'd have to subtract all of Molly Dodd's bohemian wit, and all her subtle yuppie brilliance, to compare her with that slutty gang of needy thirtysomethings!
What I meant was that sex and the city was a rip off off this series, yes cheaper, slutty etc. but the basic premise of sex felt to me like a rip off.
Blair Brown looks just as sexy now as she did 25 years ago.

Blair Brown - the thinking man's pinup. But a rather unfortunate name if she wanted to make a comeback in Britain just at the moment ;-)

One poster's comment about this wonderful series asked why it never achieved the popularity enjoyed by "Sex and the City."
The answer is disquietingly simple to me.
"The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" was smart, droll, and sophisticated to a degree that it expected its audience to think.
"Sex and the City" titillated.
"The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" edified.
