What people need to realise is that this can happen to ANYONE! If one bank can renege on its responsibilities so can another. The facts are that your money may not be safe in any bank - but especially not in a bank on the Isle of Man.
No Financial Advisors involved, just simple savings account for most depositors in Derybshire or Singer and Friedlander that got taken over by Kaupthing. The IOM approved the take over, endorsed the Parental Guarantee, told us all that everything was hunky dory (even the day before bank closed). In the meantime the FSC IOM shipped over half a billion quid of our savings to Kaupthing UK. The rest is history! IOM needs to rectify these massive blunders.
The Isle of Man government's FSC decided to put over 50% of the bank's assets in another jurisdiction unsecured. It is therefore the government's responsibility to get these assets back. In the meantime they need to guarantee depositor funds 100% like all reputable banking centres.
UK Icelandic subsidiaries KSF, Heritable and Icesave collapsed on 7 and 8 October last year. In each case, declaration of default triggered FSCS protection. Under FSCS rules claimants can claim up to £50,000 while the Government issued top-up payments for depositors with over £50,000.

He told them that the Icelandic bankers did not have the necessary experience. Both UK and IOM knew of the risks, yet they allowed the take over. IOM endorsed the Parental guarantee issued by Kaupthing hf. Most people caught in this disaster banked with S&F or Derbyshire. They were given reassurance by IOM (e-mails and phone calls) that all was well.
As a UK expat without a UK residence I was not allowed a UK mainland Account, Was advised to put my life savings with Derbyshire in the IOM. They soon after sold out to Kaupthing without any consultation or options, result Life Savings Frozen

Sorry to disppoint you but I do pay tax to the Inland Revenue in UK. I dont actually get anything for it. Also I am not permitted to open bank accounts in the UK so have to bank offshore.
They are quite welcome if they want to waste their time on that. All my interest is fully declared and tax paid in my country of residence and I'm declared non-liable for UK tax. There are many others like me.
Well when the HMRC decides to do its special investigation, they will realize that those who deposited their savings in IOM, are mainly UK expats who are not eligible to bank on UK mainland, and who are actually advised by the UK gov. to bank offshore. These expats pay their taxes in their relevant country of residence. UK residents CANNOT escape paying tax in UK if they bank offshore. Do not fall into Darling's Mantra that all who bank offshore are tax dodgers. You need to check your facts!
Well check your facts first! The HMRC will realize that the majority of those who deposited their savings in IOM were forced to do so as they are UK expats and are not allowed to bank on UK mainland. There is a UK Gov website that advises UK expats to bank offshore. These people pay taxes in their relevant country of residence. UK residents who bank offshore CANNOT avoid UK taxes. If you know how to avoid this, please let us know! The only people who are avoiding UK tax are Darling and his posse

What do you think we've all been doing for the last 10 months? Writing to British MPs to ask for our money back - and how many wishy-washy replies have we had saying It's not our responsibility... it's the IoM's jurisdiction. About the same number.
I would advise anybody with money in any Bank in the Isle of Man to move it to a jurisdiction where the government take on its responsibilities and cover deposits in Banks there in line with everybody else. In the IOM they DON'T. They offer you a half baked scheme to protect their reputation and almost 12 months later I have received £10,000 only and it looks like many years before I see anything substantial
Do not blame the Isle of Man - this is down to the UK Government and their ability to slap anti-terrorist legislation on whomever and whatever they like. This action alone froze all the assets in the bank and there is little we on the ISland can do!

It is not the Isle of Man Government's fault, it all stems from the UK imposing anti-terroism legislation on the Icelandic Bank and when asked for help the UK Government said NO!
The Manx Government has tried extremely hard to resolve this situation from it's own pockets!
For Manx residents, had the IOMG acted quickly to resolve the situation and guaranteed deposits they would have had a PR triumph and thousands of grateful depositors. Instead they have thousands of angry depositors and a looming PR disaster. Lobby your government for you might be treated just as shabbily the next time there's a bank failure on the IOM. But whilst your government tries to brush us under the carpet I have told people and will continue telling people DON'T BANK ON THE ISLE OF MAN.
Whilst we're on the subject of getting facts straight, the ATCSA was not used against Kaupthing.
Instead, the FSA determined that KSFUK did not meet the threshold conditions. With the limited information available to us, that seems fairly reasonable. Just think about it. After Icesave accounts were frozen, no one in the UK was going to piss around with an Icelandic bank, whether it was covered by the FSCS or not.
It is the IoM's fault because some dimwitted regulator on the ioM chose to authorize the transfer of over half a billion pounds to the UK without it being ring-fenced. How stupid can you get?

Sold my business in 2007 to look after my infirm parents. Put my life savings in Derbyshire BS, who sold off this arm of their business to KSF Isle of Man. This bank failed due to the UK Government HM Taxes wants capital gains tax paid for sale of my business, HM Government /IOM demanded I pay my taxes but will not refund my savings in full. This lady puts all bankers and politicians to shame.

The British Government first makes it virtually impossible for non resident Brits to have bank accounts in UK, instructing British banks to tell expats to put their money in the Isle of Man. Then it tells an Isle of Man bank to deposit hundreds of millions of those savers money in a British bank which it knew it was about to be close. The Manx authorities may be a cartload of monkeys but it's the British Government that's grinding the organ.
I would recomend that anyone who has a bank account, insurance policy or investment fund based in the Isle of Man give serious consideration to removing it as a matter of urgency. The Kaupthing IOM debacle has demonstrated that this is not a jurisdiction compentent to regulate a serious off-shore financial centre.
After the Kaupthing bank collapsed my Isle of Man bank told me that it could not guarantee my life savings deposit was 100% secure. What then are banks for? I took my money out the SWIFT-est way possible! The Chief of the Financial Supervision Commission has confirmed that deposits like investments are not 100% guaranteed on the Isle of Man. I believe him! So the lady from Venice is right: YOU CAN'T BANK ON THE ISLE OF MAN TO GUARANTEE YOUR DEPOSIT WOULD BE 100% SAFE !

Sorry to disppoint you but I do pay tax to the Inland Revenue in UK. I dont actually get anything for it. Also I am not permitted to open bank accounts in the UK so have to bank offshore.

They are quite welcome if they want to waste their time on that. All my interest is fully declared and tax paid in my country of residence and I'm declared non-liable for UK tax. There are many others like me.

Well when the HMRC decides to do its special investigation, they will realize that those who deposited their savings in IOM, are mainly UK expats who are not eligible to bank on UK mainland, and who are actually advised by the UK gov. to bank offshore. These expats pay their taxes in their relevant country of residence. UK residents CANNOT escape paying tax in UK if they bank offshore. Do not fall into Darling's Mantra that all who bank offshore are tax dodgers. You need to check your facts!

Well check your facts first! The HMRC will realize that the majority of those who deposited their savings in IOM were forced to do so as they are UK expats and are not allowed to bank on UK mainland. There is a UK Gov website that advises UK expats to bank offshore. These people pay taxes in their relevant country of residence. UK residents who bank offshore CANNOT avoid UK taxes. If you know how to avoid this, please let us know! The only people who are avoiding UK tax are Darling and his posse

I will welcome any scrutiny from the UK tax authorities. I have nothing to hide. However, I doubt the same can be said of the greedy and immoral fat cat bankers who lived high off the hog on the lifesavings of old age pensioners. Now that the spotlight of the Global Financial Integrity Task Force is shining on the Isle of Dishonesty, I'm sure there will be some "special investigations" taking place and aimed at the right people!

I see this video has been picked up by international financial organsiations concerned about the Isle of Man. Even the White House has seen it as Obama suspects the Isle of Man as a dodgy place to bank despite a high-powered delegation fom there recently visiting Washington to pull wool over their eyes.

The reason you're stuck in this unfortunate situation is because you clearly didn't understand the risks, but were quite happy to take advantage of the benefits.
The Isle of Man DOESN'T have your money. The United Kingdom government does.
Take your case to Mr Brown and Mr Darling; they're the ones who still hold the assets of the bank. It is too convenient to blame the Isle of Man.
I guess you don't/won't understand the full details.

Many KSFIOM depositors were transferred by Derbyshire BS. We were not allowed to withdraw our savings bonds as we were legally contracted to stay a certain time. Many, Many people saved with Singer and Friedlander for many, many years, when IOM earnt money off them. Your FSC/Government were in charge of these changes, so it is the IOM's responsibility!!

I would advise anybody with money in any Bank in the Isle of Man to move it to a jurisdiction where the government take on its responsibilities and cover deposits in Banks there in line with everybody else. In the IOM they DON'T. They offer you a half baked scheme to protect their reputation and almost 12 months later I have received £10,000 only and it looks like many years before I see anything substantial

Do not blame the Isle of Man - this is down to the UK Government and their ability to slap anti-terrorist legislation on whomever and whatever they like. This action alone froze all the assets in the bank and there is little we on the ISland can do!

I have lived and worked onthe Island for ten years within the financial sector.
It is not the Isle of Man Government's fault, it all stems from the UK imposing anti-terroism legislation on the Icelandic Bank and when asked for help the UK Government said NO!
The Manx Government has tried extremely hard to resolve this situation from it's own pockets!

For Manx residents, had the IOMG acted quickly to resolve the situation and guaranteed deposits they would have had a PR triumph and thousands of grateful depositors. Instead they have thousands of angry depositors and a looming PR disaster. Lobby your government for you might be treated just as shabbily the next time there's a bank failure on the IOM. But whilst your government tries to brush us under the carpet I have told people and will continue telling people DON'T BANK ON THE ISLE OF MAN.

Whilst we're on the subject of getting facts straight, the ATCSA was not used against Kaupthing.
Instead, the FSA determined that KSFUK did not meet the threshold conditions. With the limited information available to us, that seems fairly reasonable. Just think about it. After Icesave accounts were frozen, no one in the UK was going to piss around with an Icelandic bank, whether it was covered by the FSCS or not.

The 100% guarantee which attracted me to the bank is worthless and the IOM Government can't care less about the people who have lost their life savings here.

We too are amongst the 11,000 depositors who lost their life times hard earned, tax paid savings having put it in a bank on the Isle of Man. The 100% guarantee passed by their Financial Services Commission was WORTHLESS and their Compensation Scheme unfunded. Don't bank there!

Sold my business in 2007 to look after my infirm parents. Put my life savings in Derbyshire BS, who sold off this arm of their business to KSF Isle of Man. This bank failed due to the UK Government HM Taxes wants capital gains tax paid for sale of my business, HM Government /IOM demanded I pay my taxes but will not refund my savings in full. This lady puts all bankers and politicians to shame.

I too am a depositor who lost my lifesavings to these shysters but, thankfully, we live in the information age. They can run (from their responsibilities - and oh how they run) but they can't hide (from feisty ladies with video cameras and a catchy ditty!) I doff my hat to you, brave lady. All who bank in the Isle of man - take heed - we have lost our entire life savings and are not about to get them returned by the bank in the Isle of Man which collapsed last October - try to imagine how YOU would live without money in todays society - especially if you are beyond retirement age and can no longer work !!!!! The British Government first makes it virtually impossible for non resident Brits to have bank accounts in UK, instructing British banks to tell expats to put their money in the Isle of Man. Then it tells an Isle of Man bank to deposit hundreds of millions of those savers money in a British bank which it knew it was about to be close. The Manx authorities may be a cartload of monkeys but it's the British Government that's grinding the organ.

I would recomend that anyone who has a bank account, insurance policy or investment fund based in the Isle of Man give serious consideration to removing it as a matter of urgency. The Kaupthing IOM debacle has demonstrated that this is not a jurisdiction compentent to regulate a serious off-shore financial centre.

After the Kaupthing bank collapsed my Isle of Man bank told me that it could not guarantee my life savings deposit was 100% secure. What then are banks for? I took my money out the SWIFT-est way possible! The Chief of the Financial Supervision Commission has confirmed that deposits like investments are not 100% guaranteed on the Isle of Man. I believe him! So the lady from Venice is right: YOU CAN'T BANK ON THE ISLE OF MAN TO GUARANTEE YOUR DEPOSIT WOULD BE 100% SAFE !

Take heed all potential depositors -beware! You think it a safe place to put all your savings but the collapse of Kaupthing IOM Bank has proved otherwise. If this was not bad enough, the financial institutions and IOM government has failed to step in and support depositors who have supported them in the past. If you want a shaky investment - invest in the Isle of Man but recommend you bank ANYWHERE else

My parents lost their life savings in this rotting exscuse for a banking center too. The goverment are all ex shop keepers and tradesman, totally incapable of making any decision larger than where to place the next bus stop or where to host the annual conker championship.
Anyone reading this who has money to invest.......burn it before you place it in the Isle of Man!!!!
