  • cool, im growing beef tomatos, mmm yummy

  • Ok. I have four in pots:

    Arkansas Traveler- indeterminent,

    Husky Cherry Red- indeterminent,

    Red Grape- ?

    and

    Brandywine (heirloom)- ?

Any ideas about the last two?

Any ideas about which varieties I should plant in my containers? They are big black ones, like for trees.

    Thanks:)

    BOP

  • I don't know about Red Grape but I'm pretty sure Brandywine is indeterminant. Red grape sounds like it would be a Cherry type of small tomato. My guess is that cherry type of tomatoes should do OK in a container. they of course will probably need to be staked. If it were me I wouldn't try the Brandywine in a container but who knows, it might do ok. I haven't got a clue about the Arkansas Traveler.

Best of luck with your tomatoes and don't take what I say as the gospel. Sometimes, Cont.

  • you just never know for certain how something will work out until you give it a try:)

  • Oh! Gosh! I will read them today! Thank you.

How do you keep deer out of your garden?

  • I ask them very politely to stay out of my garden and it mostly seems to work:)))

But seriously we actually do have deer in this area but they never show too much interest in my garden. I guess they have enough to eat without bothering it much. Occasionally I see deer tracks in my garden but they don't seem to ever do much damage. I guess I've just been lucky. I did have to put a temporary fence around my beans this year because of the rabbits.

  • "" "determinent" rather than "indeterminent" when planting in a planter.""

    Ok! That's greek! lol

    BOP

  • Some tomato varieties are bush varieties which will reach a height of about 4 feet and then quit getting any taller. These are "determinant" and are what most people choose to plant when planting in a container. The "indeterminant" ones will get much taller and are what most people choose to plant when planting in the garden. Sometimes it says on the little plastic thing sticking into the soil when you buy the plant which type it is.

  • Oh! I didn't do that to my tomato plants because I never heard of that before. Why do you need so much of a root system? My plants are a bit bigger now and have been in the big planter for a week and a half now. Should I take them up and strip them down and replant them? Or would that cause too much damage? I'm afraid of breaking the roots. I also planted some carrots around it, will they get enough sun? I didn't know how much room tomato roots need.

I'll put up a video showing what I did.

    BOP

  • It wasn't so much that I needed a huge root system as it was still very early in the season when I posted this. I didn't want to put them in the ground right then because the soil was so cold. I knew the roots would be getting crowded before the ground warmed up so I repotted them. If I buy tomato plants later in the season then I don't repot them. Cont.

  • I don't have much experience planting stuff in a planter I'm afraid. I've only tried once and didn't have much luck. I know it's best to have some sort of patio tomato which is "determinent" rather than "indeterminent" when planting in a planter.

  • Oh, I'm behind again.. but I will catch up.. not just right now! Response posted.. :)

  • Not only am I behind, but obviously confused.. I had seen this one.. but I still haven't seen the one after.. so I will.. later.. :)

  • I think you still might be confused. This is my second Garden Vlog of the season. So far there's none after it. It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I post another. I guess you must have missed the first one. I need to try to keep these things shorter. Yikes, 10 minutes to repot some tomatoes is far too long

  • No, I saw the first one.. and this one with the pepper pots.. but I think you have some sort of car video posted?? Anyroad, it's on my list.. it's not forgotten! :0) I'm just busy with a modelling video, or rather a couple of snippits I'll use in a coming modelling video.. a bit of preparation now will save a lot of time later.. :)

  • I checked them and and commented a couple of them. Best of luck with your garden. I think you're going to be eating a lot of tomatoes this summer!

  • Neat little tunnel you built there. I gotta say that's ALOT of mater plants. Holy cow! lol

  • Yeah, I seriously doubt I plant all of them. That would work me to death, LOL. I wanted a good variety and unfortunately I they're often in a six-pack when I only want a couple.

  • WOW! You already have leaves on your trees. None here yet, just buds.

  • *Some* of them are leafed out pretty good, but quite a few of them still have a good ways to go yet. It actually got down to 32 degrees Friday morning and there was a tiny bit of frost. My tent tomatoes were fine though:)

  • I sent in my extension form... grrr TAXES. I like tomatoes better :O) You like your diet Dr. Pepper!? OMG !! You shop at WalMart? I hope I didn't really hear that. That is worse than TAXES!!! BLINK! I am aghast... :O(

  • I'm trying to cut out or at least cut down on my soda addiction because it's so bad for you. I haven't drank a single one in over a month. And that includes restaurants. Whether I can keep it up remains to be seen however. I've been saving them up though because I knew they'd come in handy. I also use them when I change the oil in my van.

I shop werever things are the cheapest. Which most of the time happens to be WalMart. And NOTHING is worse than filling out taxes, LOL.

  • Great ideas you always have, i use those cut off domes for germination as well! Gosh a great thing to do on tax day for sure, i was sweating among 20 thousand people! I have such a small area, but perhaps vloggin a lil one in response wouldnt hurt. Luckily we got rain last 2 days, so i can aerate some of that dry ass soil!

  • I normally get my taxes done about a month ahead of the deadline. Turbo Tax is the only way to travel when filling out taxes these days. It saves me loads of time.

We usually have quite a bit of rain in the spring. The last few summers have been droughts though, with only about an inch of rain in June and an inch in July. Not nearly enough. Watering so much is a pain in the butt!

  • Hello kitties!! Beautiful plants already!! Blessings, Grams

  • Hopefully the plants will stay beautiful. You just never know with gardening.

The 3CoolKats send their Meows to Grams and Papi!

  • Needless (seedless) to say I haven't even sown my toms yet.. plans goes to pot, but the seeds don't, when you work nights and wake up tired.. :) Wouldn't it be better to have the pepper plants planted in the pepper bottle pots..

Ah, say that after a soda pop or two: 'Pepper plants planted in the pepper bottle pots', 'pepper plants planted in the pepper bottle pots'..

I bet you can't say that fast.. I hereby challenge you to try in your next gardening vlog!! :) I trippledog dare ya'.. :)

  • I hadn't thought about the Dr. Pepper/Pepper plant thing. Thanks for pointing out my error, LOL.

Wow, that's a pretty doggone hard tongue-twister! I just tried it and failed miserably. Tongue twisters are one of those things you can improve on quite a bit with practice but I don't think I want to put that much effort into it at the moment, LOL.

  • ...pottle bots.. :)

  • Pepper pants

  • You had a warmer day than I did yesterday, it just doesnt seem like spring here yet.

  • We've had some nice and not so nice days. It looks like we'll have a high of about 56 today but Friday morning it's supposed to be 35 for a low with possible frost.

  • Great looking garden Blinky.

  • Thanks Carol!!!

  • That's a great idea for pre-planting seedlings in the liter bottles. I'll have to show this to my son -- he's the master mater maker in the family -- ;)

  • I'd prefer to have some nice tall pots with flat bottoms but I never seem to have any around when I need them. The soda bottles work out fine though so long as you put them in something so they won't turn over. May your master mater maker grow plenty of materful maters this season!

  • Thanks for keeping me company while I had my second cup of coffee. I have a ton of writing to do today.

You're garden seems to be off to a good start. I loved those big, green trees in the background at the 6:40 mark.

So, do you drink all that diet soda yourself?

And it's nice to see all three KoolCats at once.

    Cheers!

  • Sounds like you should be all revved up and ready to rumble after two cups of coffee! Of course I don't think I've ever seen you tooo revved up, LOL.

Yep, I drank 100% of that diet soda myself. However I've not drank any soda at all in about a month. Aspartame is bad for you. Too much sugar is bad for you. Even the rest of the soda ingredients are bad for you. I'm hoping I can keep it up but I've gone this long before without drinking any and then started back.

    Cont.

  • And I don't know if I'd call those trees or bushes. I don't know the name of them but they're humongous! These two are in pretty good shape but one near the fishpond has lots of broken limbs because of snowstorms. The limbs get REALLY weighted down with snow sometimes.

  • Well, whatever those trees are, I like 'em.

I stopped drinking soda about a year ago. I think I may have had about a half-a-can in all that time. It's just about the worst thing you can ingest. It only has ingredients that are less-than-good for you and zero nutritional value of any kind.

but, of course, it tastes great, dang it.

  • Ps.gorgeous cat :)

  • *Suzy takes and bow and thanks spiralisedcat:)*

  • potting soil costs at least twice as much in england! you sure like your doctor pepper :D I used to love root beer from macdonalds but they dont sell it anymore,Great informative post rob.

  • Yayyy for cheap potting soil:) I really wish it wasn't always wet though. Even when it's not rained in several days those bags of soil are always wet when they're stored outside the store on pallets. I actually did quit drinking all sodas about a month ago. Aspartame is bad for you. No lets see if I can stay quit!

  • This is going to be my project, this year. Mine will be just a deck garden, so not much effort to go to.

  • Best of luck on the deck garden Marc!

  • I want some tomatoes this year...mikma was here

  • *Tosses Mikma some cyber tomatoes* Cyber tomatoes are always delicious and in season:)

  • I like your show for the same reason I watch house renovating shows on TV. It's always more fun watching someone else do it.

  • I watch those renovation shows too. And yet I'm actually too lazy to even vacuum more than about once a month much less remodel anything, LOL. That reminds me, I'm behind on my vacuuming.

  • It IS more fun watching someone else do it AND you don't get sore muscles, aches and pains... BUT you also don't get fresh juicy 'maters. I Love you robertpina99! Your videos are way cool!

  • i had forgot you could plant maters like that... the extra roots help out allot. glad you reminded me!

  • Yep! I always plant them good and deep. Not only do the extra roots help but tomato seedlings are often tall and spindly, so planting them deep helps keep them from toppling over.

  • Looks like you are going to have another wonderful garden/farm going again! I threw a bunch of seeds in a pot and lots of things coming up, but I have NO idea what they are...lol If they make it through, I'll let you know what they are...:-)

  • Sounds like a nice laid back growing method ya got there! I shall await a report for the desert. Be very careful if any of those plants start singing and saying "Feed Me" "Feed Me"

  • I didn't think of that! This could be a "little shop of horrors" that I have started! LOL

  • You should be ok until your pets start dissappearing:)

  • WHO PAYS TAXES!?!?!?

  • Leona Helmsley once said "only the little people pay taxes". I guess that includes me, LOL.

  • nowadays only SLAVES pay taxes, income tax is ILLEGAL by definition of the Constitution of America.

  • Just wondering, why do you re-plant them in those Dr Pepper bottles instead of just planting them in the ground?

  • It's very early in the year and the ground is still cold. They just don't seem to do very well (even if I cover the plants with protection) when I put them in the ground this early. The soil in these bottles will be warmer than the ground soil. Also I'll probably plant a few of them in other places besides just where this teepee fence is and I don't have the ground prepared yet for them in those other places.
