Don't underestimate the need of a singer to truly _express_ something. It's not always done by following the notes in the hymn book. Sometimes... just like fingers on keys... the vocalist needs to, and deserves to, blow that word out of the instrument for the glory of God. & praise God, bc singing affects the singer more than those who hear it. It's totally oversinging. The listener shouldn't have to struggle hear the lyric. The filigrees and mellismas and growling and the like betray a lack of faith in the power of the message the songwriter is seeking to convey through the words. The vocal acrobatics get in the way.
