If you wanted a sub with amazing power handling, look elsewhere. If you want, arguably the best sound quality, you go with JL. Hey guess what Cerwin Vega uses for their surrounds? Foam, yeah. You're right, they never updated their design. But seriously, why would anyone want to change something that works, and works really well? The only changes JL could do to the W7 while making it better than it is now is giving it a 7" voice coil, carbon fiber cone and dust cap, neo magnet, and a 1ohm configuration. The reasons so many manufacturers keep changing their designs is because they 1) couldn't get it right the first time or 2) are more worried about cosmetic appeal.

The only downfall of a 7" voice coil would be the required amount of power to run it, I was exaggerating with 7"...(that's what she said). A 4" voice coil on the W7 would be a good idea, at least on the 12 and 13W7. CF wouldn't be a structural improvement but using CF would be lighter and stronger than using the plastic that's currently used. The only thing they really could do with the pole piece would be to use a more dense material and create a stronger mag field for the VC to react against.

yeah, it's mainly power and box design so either could win. A JL W7 would easy beat a RE XXX at SQ cause a XXX is SPL and W7 is SQ. But it all depends on the box and the power. I only say that they are over priced because a retail of $439.95 for a 8" is quite alot and so are the bigger ones. Oh well, they look nice and sound nice and make bass so i don't really mind :-)

JL did the smartest thing with the W7. They gave it optimal performance and gave it an "image". That brought up the only problem with the W7, it costs WAY too much for that "image". I've mainly owned Rockford and MTX equipment and I will say the same things that make Alpine, Kicker, RE, Fi, and DD fans have said: the W7 just isn't worth THAT much. Of course it could be better, like twin spider suspension, outward mounting holes, or rubber surround. But that's why there are other makers.

I never liked JL audio.. I've seen rubber surrounds wear away from heat and cold but not as quickly as foam. The inward mounting holes do make it an inconvenience for your average user especially since the sub is quite heavy. My thing with it is you'd have to create some weird contraption just to mount it with the magnet out. But what's smart about inward mounting holes is the end of the surround is at the end of the frame, leaving more room for better surround structure and more room for cone surface area.

Check out the JL Audio Fathom home subwoofer. It uses a reconditioned W7 driver.
