Vodka martinis get lemon - Gin martinis get olives (or bar onions with either) for my tsstes. if you're payin' the bill, it's your call. Mr. or Miss customer
@aldoxyzable Gins come in a wide variety of flavours; e.g. Bombay Sapphire is very fragrant with about 10 different spices/flavours mixed in. He's saying other less fragrant gins (which I think he prefers - looks like he's using Plymouth) will change the taste of the Martini.
Yeah it's only becasue of his explanation that eats the time away...normally he would stir for about 30 seconds, then strain it into the glass quickly.
1. It should not take more than 20–30 seconds to explain how to make such an extremely simple cocktail. Tell the ingredients and method. The rest is just time-wasting waffle.
2. It is unnecessary to spend $30 (for God's sake) on "bar tools" simply to mix gin and vermouth. I have been doing it for decades with no need to spend money on silverware — just to combine two liquids — which could be better spent on good liquor.
Without Vermouth its just drinking vodka straight in a fancy glass. A small amount of vermouth adds a nice aftertaste and makes it taste like a drink. Also adding Gin to a Vodka Martini is kind of weird. his drink must taste like a slightly fruity pine tree.
@bmanandrybow it is a vermouth from the company martini & rossi, the name is maybe a coincidence, but there is no gin in it. anyway you shouldn't use that for the martini cocktail, because there is better vermouth on the market
@theoriginalTiz martini is a brand, most well known for it's vermouth. it's a bit confusing, but i'm sure there's some corporate/historical back-story to the name of this particular cocktail!
@iknowadirtyword4ever James Bond's drink in the Ian Flemming book Casino Royale was actually an Americano ( red vermouth and campari topped with soda and an orange curl for garnish). Might want to check your facts as well as your spelling.
@DuttonWebb Who cares what is considered "posh"? Poshness is a socially constructed idea, void of any real meaning. In an alternate universe is may be considered "posh" to crap yourself at the dinner table :P
It is nice to see someone who agrees that Vermouth is supposed to actually be IN a Martini. Thanks for a great video on this classic that is and always will be my favorite cocktail.
geez... i am TRYING to learn how to do this as easily as possible and yet the guy in this video has a ton of stuff on the table in front of him and making this martini thing a major ordeal .. .. . geeeeez . . ..
This is wrong, use a shaker ... 1 part Vermouth, 6 parts Gin. That's the ratio. Squeeze in at most one olive, for a dirty mix. Then, put in some ice, and shake the thing until it's cold.
Then, pour it into the chilled glass and put in two olives for garnishment. That's it, for a classic Martini.
@kngrtk just martini with vodka can shake... and the gin martini is diferent if you shake is loose all aromatic flavor in the gin thats why his stirred... my friend
he is telling about making it proper, but he doesn't even do the basics! in the end you get a very watery and warm drink, and for a Martini that is unacceptable!
uashhhh that seems so strong in smell and also in flavour-but not too much, like in bad martinis- and the lemmon is definitely superior to olives, sometimes,,, well maybe not
not perfect, that means half sweet half dry vermouth. You have just made a relitively wet martini, and over diluted it. Never add bitters to a martini, that's Manhattan, shaken is a bad idea, unless you want a cloudy harsher drink - it is a very very specialized taste. James bond had it this way because he was a rogue. although he had it with 3 parts gordons, 1 part vodka, half Kina Lillet and shaken in a vesper martini - other wise shaking isn't called for
@mufasahootenanny Do you believe having so little vermouth that it's undetectable makes a great martini? Also, orange bitters is necessary because we don't often have the availability of many vermouths that feature orange in north america. It brings a hint of character.
@PyroChemicals2 Where did you get so little vermouth from? If your making a perfect then use half sweet half dry, if your making a wet use more if dry use less depending on how wet or dry the customer of your personal preference is. Again, bitters are unnecessary, go to a decent bar in north america and you will find vermouths with hints of orange if you so desire (n prat for example use orange zest) of have an orange twist. the bitters really pollute what is meant to be a clean drink.
A "perfect Martini" has sweet and dry vermouth. Thats what "perfect" means when ordering a cocktail. A classic martini is always gin and it's not a martini with out vermouth. All you people asking "wheres the bitters" ar retarded.
@C5Rigzz Well thats just not true, bitters are appropriate in some cases, but over used by so many bartenders for the sake of it. I was served a Hemingway daiquiri with the most horrendous grapefruit bitters dashed in. Made the drink tart and harsh. Classic cocktails do ofter require bitters to add depth ect. but a martini is a clean crisp drink not in need of them... if you don't believe me check the differs guide... not many people can disagree with it.
where can I buy a jigger(for morons, that is a metal thing that is supposed to be used as a mesurement tool for alcoholic drinks) btw this guy is the best man for teachings and other bullshit craps=> thank you howdini.com
Thank you for telling folks that vermouth should be in the drink, since a Martini without it is just a glass of chilled Gin.... which is fine too, but it isn't a Martini.
Really, the vesper isn't a pure martini but it's the most refreshing variant if made well. A big problem with the method this guy is using is that it dilutes the martini too much.
Maybe should be a reason if it' s named "Martini cocktail" and not "vermouth cocktaail". Then....... martini cocktail requires olive and vodka martini requires lemon.
@TheHage91 he's not doing the proper motion with the bar spoon, but rather just messing the ice.I dont think its really that big a deal, but to mix a "perfect" martini you gotta pay atention to these little things.
@inkey2 It's when you drink for the buzz... That's when it's refreshing. Not only does the taste wake you up, but the sensation of being on top of the world ;) Plus, you'll feel like Bond. Rock on m8, Cheers!
Mixing the vermouth straight in is a wet martini, not a dry. Try a new london distilled gin called Sipsmiths. It's the first copper continous pot still distilled gin in england for about 200 years and it is delicious. Also it doesn't reveal its proof aggresively on the palette. As for the vermouth, Noilly pratt you can use a fair amount and it wont bite your tongue off. Enjoy x
@heeh2 It depends what you like really. I like Beefeater Gin and it isn't too bad with the cost. Martini & Rossi Extra Dry Vermouth is what I also use. Just experiment, everyone has their own brand that they like the most.
Alright listen you can't bruise gin or vermouth. The term bruising gin or vermouth refers to the effect the dilution has on the cocktail when you shake it. Now make me a apple martini and SHOVE IT UP MY ARSE!
When a drink is named perfect, it means that is contains equal parts of dry and sweet vermouth. This obviously isn't a perfect martini when it only contains dry vermouth.
Allen has obviously never seen a James Bond movie. A "perfect martini" to many is made with vodka, not gin. Also shaken, not stirred. The vodka, vermouth, and ice water blend better in a cocktail shaker.
A little bit diluted????? Not only does his mix sit in the glass for 1 min and 26 seconds it is crap tiny ice and he chills his cocktail glass AFTER making his martini. His blurb also says he is a cocktail trainer? Damn. I'm sick of having to train people out of bad habits..... Instilled by people who don't understand even the most simple/importants parts of cocktail making. i.e. DILUTION
I don't like vermouth either, but that's what goes into a Martini. If you just want chilled vodka or gin in a glass, well, great, but call it what it is.
As someone who works in a Martini Bar, this video is rediculous. Way too much Vermouth, he fills the glass way to much (it's going to spill when it gets carried to the table) and gin he uses (Plymouth) is putrid. Also, his ratio's are probably from the 1940's. Since then the ratio has moved from 5:1 gin to vermouth to 12:1 and I drink them at 20:1 gin to vermouth.
@MrAcrams Plymouth is putrid? What would you recommend then, Seagrams? As for the vermouth, it's all a matter of taste. Those who make it with a drop of vermouth are just trying to be vogue.
@MrAcrams Plymouth is far from Putrid. But then again cocktails and any alcohol is all about a matter of taste. Just like martini's his method may be a little lacking but taste is just that, a matter of taste. You drink them at 20:1 Which is truly wonderful. I make them many ways for many people depending on how THEY like it, not me.
as far as I know the term 'perfect' in a drink means it would include a dash of dry vermouth and a dash of sweet vermouth which I personally think makes a big difference... please correct me if I am wrong
@eonseons perfect is new in the scheme of things. 'Perfect' regarding manhattans is bullshit. Manhattans were first made with bad, high proof bootleg whisk(e)y in the prohibition era so to calm the burn down it was made with not only sweet vermouth but sugar (which limits the alcoholic burn on the palate). Then whisk(e)y became legal and was produced properly so sugar was no longer necessary. Hence a 'dry' manhattan was whisky, SWEET vermouth, NO sugar. Dry vermouth didn't exist in Manhattan era
i thought perfect martinis have a dash of dry and sweet vermouth with 2 oz. of gin and what he shows here is just a martini...correct me please if im wrong im in bartending school...thanks
DILUTED??? I would drink plain water if I wanted a diluted drink! James bond didn't ask for drinks shaken, not stirred for a reason. Nice and cold. What is a good gin? I think that sapphire gin tastes like it looks, like Mennen after shave! Yuk! Amsterdam is not bad.
@KingADunkley Kina Lillet hasn't been made in over 20 years. Even old bottles are probably fading in character. You'd have to use a Lillet Blanc and still make adjustments... it's a bit different.
Not bad, but you should put the ice in the martini glass FIRST, then start making the drink to ensure that the martini glass gets polar bear toenail temp.
That Commie SOB! TOO MUCH VERMOUTH! 15:1 at a maximum. And chill the glass BEFORE you stir the drink (letting it sit is making it too weak). Lastly, I confess this is just me, but; olives with neutral stuffing for gin, lemon twists for vodka, and if it's anything but some combination of those two and vermouth, you're an idiot... God, I've become a drink snob.
@KonElKent I actually agree with him on this one. I'm still -ahem- studying them, but I've found that a 5:1 ratio is quite tasty. Of course, this all depends on your choices in gin and vermouth. I, personally, have been using Bluecoat gin and Dolin vermouth. And as far as that gin goes, I'm eager to try a lemon twist. Bluecoat has a lot of great citrus notes that would be well-complimented by one. I do, however, agree about his chilling method. That glass should already be chilled.
@KonElKent One last note is that I've found that combining the ingredients in a separate mixing glass, swirling, and then gently pouring into an ice-filled mixing glass results in a more uniform cocktail. Thoughts?
dude you were right about the vermouth!

Shaken - not Stirred
Cry53r 10 months ago
@Cry53r Stirred not shaken.
muslimhunterFTW 10 months ago
Allen has obviously never seen a James Bond movie. A "perfect martini" to many is made with vodka, not gin. Also shaken, not stirred. The vodka, vermouth, and ice water blend better in a cocktail shaker.
elrond70 10 months ago
A little bit diluted????? Not only does his mix sit in the glass for 1 min and 26 seconds it is crap tiny ice and he chills his cocktail glass AFTER making his martini. His blurb also says he is a cocktail trainer? Damn. I'm sick of having to train people out of bad habits..... Instilled by people who don't understand even the most simple/importants parts of cocktail making. i.e. DILUTION
stickyourfingerinmy 10 months ago
I don't like vermouth either, but that's what goes into a Martini. If you just want chilled vodka or gin in a glass, well, great, but call it what it is.
Detson101 10 months ago
As someone who works in a Martini Bar, this video is rediculous. Way too much Vermouth, he fills the glass way to much (it's going to spill when it gets carried to the table) and gin he uses (Plymouth) is putrid. Also, his ratio's are probably from the 1940's. Since then the ratio has moved from 5:1 gin to vermouth to 12:1 and I drink them at 20:1 gin to vermouth.
MrAcrams 10 months ago
@MrAcrams Plymouth is putrid? What would you recommend then, Seagrams? As for the vermouth, it's all a matter of taste. Those who make it with a drop of vermouth are just trying to be vogue.
ye11owsn0w 10 months ago
@MrAcrams Plymouth is far from Putrid. But then again cocktails and any alcohol is all about a matter of taste. Just like martini's his method may be a little lacking but taste is just that, a matter of taste. You drink them at 20:1 Which is truly wonderful. I make them many ways for many people depending on how THEY like it, not me.

To all americans who live in the states where you have to be 21 to drink....in denmark you can drink when ure 16 :D!
2976847 10 months ago
@2976847
Nope. You can drink at the age you want, and buy it when you have turned 16 ;)
Og ja, jeg ved hvad jeg snakker om :p
akbas12 10 months ago
@akbas12 Well yeah XD but its kinda hard to get your hands on alcohol before you turn the legal age of buying.

as far as I know the term 'perfect' in a drink means it would include a dash of dry vermouth and a dash of sweet vermouth which I personally think makes a big difference... please correct me if I am wrong
eonseons 11 months ago
@eonseons perfect is new in the scheme of things. 'Perfect' regarding manhattans is bullshit. Manhattans were first made with bad, high proof bootleg whisk(e)y in the prohibition era so to calm the burn down it was made with not only sweet vermouth but sugar (which limits the alcoholic burn on the palate). Then whisk(e)y became legal and was produced properly so sugar was no longer necessary. Hence a 'dry' manhattan was whisky, SWEET vermouth, NO sugar. Dry vermouth didn't exist in Manhattan era

I have never in my life seen a bartender take 4 minutes to make a martini...that being said, it did look delicious.
TheFburgog 11 months ago
i thought perfect martinis have a dash of dry and sweet vermouth with 2 oz. of gin and what he shows here is just a martini...correct me please if im wrong im in bartending school...thanks
SKEEZIN08 11 months ago

There is only one martini.... Gin and vermouth. all others are posers...

don't use vermouth, use kina lillet,
KingADunkley 11 months ago
@KingADunkley
They don't make it any more. You should ask for Lillet Blanc
thealchemist1111 11 months ago
@KingADunkley Kina Lillet hasn't been made in over 20 years. Even old bottles are probably fading in character. You'd have to use a Lillet Blanc and still make adjustments... it's a bit different.

My tongue was sweating when watching this. This truly is one of the most refreshing beverages. Great video, I sure hope you enjoyed that Martini!
Viltgance1 11 months ago 35
Not bad, but you should put the ice in the martini glass FIRST, then start making the drink to ensure that the martini glass gets polar bear toenail temp.
gofish407 11 months ago 60
@gofish407 He does say you should do that. For the sake of demonstration he didn't.

@gofish407 or put the glass in the freezer works a little better

That Commie SOB! TOO MUCH VERMOUTH! 15:1 at a maximum. And chill the glass BEFORE you stir the drink (letting it sit is making it too weak). Lastly, I confess this is just me, but; olives with neutral stuffing for gin, lemon twists for vodka, and if it's anything but some combination of those two and vermouth, you're an idiot... God, I've become a drink snob.
KonElKent 1 year ago
@KonElKent I actually agree with him on this one. I'm still -ahem- studying them, but I've found that a 5:1 ratio is quite tasty. Of course, this all depends on your choices in gin and vermouth. I, personally, have been using Bluecoat gin and Dolin vermouth. And as far as that gin goes, I'm eager to try a lemon twist. Bluecoat has a lot of great citrus notes that would be well-complimented by one. I do, however, agree about his chilling method. That glass should already be chilled.
DanDanTheBassman 1 year ago
@KonElKent One last note is that I've found that combining the ingredients in a separate mixing glass, swirling, and then gently pouring into an ice-filled mixing glass results in a more uniform cocktail. Thoughts?

I had a party and made this, Well i shook it not stirred it everyone loved it!

Wouldn't shaking the martini make it "exceedingly cold" and "more diluted"? I prefer shaking vs. stirring.
