@WineK0ne well no. iron robe is a chi gong technique or mok gar. its using chi or inner energy. muscles have a limit but using chi can break the limits.
As a side note; It's an *incredible* insult for a man to have his hair shorn, in Imperial China. Hence why Master Wong looks honestly regretful at 8:34.
Then again, hidden weapons are considered underhanded as hell in martial arts, too.
1. In the Qing dynasty, a man was required by law to tie his hair into a queue to show his loyalty to the ruling Manchus. So cutting it off gets you into trouble.
2. In Chinese culture ( as in elsewhere ), dishevelled hair is a sign of a savage.
3. In *old* Chinese culture, cutting off ones' own body part ( including hair ) is considered unfilial as it shows disregard for one's ( biological ) heritage.
It nice to see a fight scene done right. although impossible it look real. Best of all no I mean no god awful CGI crap. I hate CGI done all the time it kill the movie. Hollywood should focus on animatronic, camera digital alteration, realistic custom, and little use of CGI, lastly good solid mature script. not some crappy sequel, or retarded plot on that only a brained dead teenager with no imagination would like. not all american are dum.
¡Imaginen estos combates!: C.Miyagi vs. Wong Fei Hung; Yip Man vs. G.Funakoshi; Huo Yuanjia vs. Bruce Lee; Ku Yu Cheung vs. Ed Parker; Nai Khanom tom vs. Bai Yu Feng; M.Oyama vs. Joe Lewis; Rickson Gracie vs. M.Kimura; Royce Gracie vs. Wally Jay; Chuck Norris vs. Ken Shamrock; Diesel Noi vs. Apidej Sit Hrun; Helio Gracie vs. Gene Lebell.
The "true" story of this isn't quite as happy. Kung Fu masters thought they could outfight westerners with bullets coming into their country and selling drugs to their people. Unfortunately, the boxer rebellion ended in China ceding territory to the dirty white colonists
I remember this being nominated somewhere in the top 10 best fighting scenes ever. I'm sure it's not surprising that all the 10 were from Chinese movies. And it wasn't any "Lolz my favorite 10 scenes, I'll post it on YT" but I had an actual DVD somewhere which had that stuff. And who could deny the fantastic choreography?
Americans think that movies like "Cradle 2 the Grave" show good fighting, it`s unbareable really... Jet Li`s old movies, as well as Jackie`s, make the garbage of Hollywood look like children`s Karate-class. This Film brings back so many memories to me, a true Classic.
Jet li should quit his hollywood movies. Hollywood movies make him look really bad on screen especially the Expendables. He got his ass kick by Dolph lungren which is really stupid and unbelievable. In reality, dolph would got kill by Jet if it is a real fight cos his fist are too fast to be seen and devastating to block.
Throughout the whole Once Upon a Time in China franchise, Master Wong only got hit 4 times and all of them came from Master Yim in this 1st movie hahaha...
Jet Li badly damaged his knee when he jumped out of the tea shop using the umbrella. For this reason a lot of the final fight was performed while Li was in plaster, meaning he had to be doubled for some of the moves. A lot of the shots are from the waist and above, to hide his plaster. The man that doubled for him was Xin Xin Xiong, who is best known as Club Foot in O.U.A.T.I.C. III
i watched this as a kid. watching it 10 times and over. i dont care if there were wires and all in this film. it was truly amazing, one of the best fight scenes ever created. films like this inspired me to learn martial arts and train so hard. i love jet li and all the martial arts actors who have made such an impact . bruce lee jackie chan donnie yen etc etcc
@TMaelstrom not sure what that is lol but a few seconds after it shows him in a horse stance.. so 5:48 must be some crazy ass horse stance with 1leg above his shoulders! :p
I haven't seen any good fighting movie nowadays. All the fighting movies I see are made to look beautiful more than making the fighting move look difficult and complex.
@xayHawj I have no problem with the physical beauty of marital arts at all, but most Hollywood movie today are cut to ribbons to the point where you can't even see half of the action anyway.
Best genre of film right here. I like realism but sometimes you just gotta have some coke, snacks and about 2 or 3 Wong Fei Hung movies to help you really relax after a week at the office.
@soapy05 Iron Robe Yim dodged it, then Wong Fei Hong opened his fist, sweeped his hand to the right to backhand slap him; it was punishment for dodging the first punch attack.
looks like wong fei hung performed a phoenix that missed, then performed a chair-fei sou which struck through and finished in the shape of a bin-sou (aka back hand which is seriously devastating and rips through the nerves causing major shock on impact and moments after)
@Ifritlordofire it's not the drunken master soundtrack. It's the wong fei hung themesong. There are a million movies starring a character named Wong Fei Hung (based on a real life martial artist), including drunken master and they all have this song playing, just like James Bond always has the same themesong even though different actors play him in different movies.
What I love about Jet Li movies is that while their might be some wirework, he actually knows Wushu (Chinese martial arts). When he was boy, he won many wushu competitions. He learned the Northern Longfist Style, Tumbling Fist, Eight Trigram Palm, Shape Intense Fist, Drunken Fist (the actual style), Eagle Claw Fist, and Praying Mantis Fist. He can also use weapons such as the 3 Section Staff (Sanjiegun), Broadsword (Dao), Straight Sword (Jian), and many others.
@qqwass She's Wong's father's "sister".....you know how Chinese sometimes claim each other to be brothers or sisters although they are not related. So she happened to be his father's sister and she's the 13th sister. I think this is pretty accurate but you might want to double check.

This movies so fuckin good. I love that the quote you remember is "their guns were too strong for our kung fu" but Jet Lee can obviously doge bullets at the end.
dont get me wrong this is an amazingly well coreographed fight but i never get the sense that wong is in any real danger ... even when hit he counterattacks and Yim comes off worse for it ... that why i prefere the sequals final fight, General Nap Lan was a genuine threat
@Valen123456 I agree with U on that 1000% . U never get the sense that he might not win, U just kno yim is gonna get his iron ass kicked. But the general in OUATIC 2 was tryin to fuck brother wong up with that sheet or towel or what ever the hell he was using.
I still enjoy movies with some or little wire works, except when people are seen flying from one mountain to the other, that's when it gets too crazy.
in wing chun practioners would not be taught to kick higher than the waist because they go more heavy on working with the hands and elbows. wu shu is a martial art that looks really good in demonstrations and movies because the martial artist does all the high kicks and flips in the are. Hong kong uses majority of the wu shu techniques because it looks good on the screen.
yip man was portrayed a bit more realistic without exaggerated wire work. the real yip man was a wing chun expert so they really couldn't go all out with flying kicks and summersaults in the air, since wing chun was not a martial arts based on fancy looks but more practical movemoents.
once in upon a time in china was directed by Tsui Hark. Hark's cinematography usually doesn't portray any realism but rather extreme exaggerations of ones abilities. kinda a like super heroe. Hark is the master at fantasy style movies. majority of his movies require wire work.
yip man didn't have any worthy opponents. He was fighting against 3rd rate villains. Yip man against iron robe yim= yip man getting broken. YIP man the movie is better because its made 17 years later. Wong Fei Hung would clean yip mans clock.
Dude Ip Man fought strong ppl he was just better than them. i disagree with wingchunlova tho because this movie is excellent. I like Ip man better, but of course it's a matter of taste. wong fei hung prolly was better than Yip, but they're both legends so let's respect them.
the thing is the movies exaggerated wong way more than they did Yip. As awesome as it is visually, I'm pretty sure Wong didn't fly around and balance on ladders like in these movies. Donnie Yen's portrayal of Yip Man was more realistic.
I agree that donnie yen's characters get more realistic portrayls. Or did wong fly around and balance on ladders???(just kidding) As for wong doing the superhuman stuff he did in the movies, you think this is outrageous, you haven't watched once upon a time in america where wong went bullet time and dodged bullets matrix style.
this movie didnt suck! its one of the best kung fu movies ever made. definitely the best in the 90s. ive got ip man dvd too which i think is the best in the 2000s.
did you guys know that jet li once denied nixon's request to be his personal bodyguard during his visit to the white house. now that takes balls of steel. its on wikipedia, depends if you trust wiki or not.
Just out of curiosity to everyone, do you all prefer this 'old-school' type of kung-fu or do any of you prefer the more modern approach at it like in "Enter The Dragon"?
mordern martial arts movie is just sum guy who does action n fights ppl this was an acual martial arts epic the theme was martial arts n its uusally portaying a histroical martial artist figure
@Liberator130 Even if your comment is 3 years old :-)
If you look at FIST OF LEGEND (Jet Lee) which is a remake of FIST OF FURY (Bruce Lee), which introduced the modern style of Kung Fu (martial Art in the current times), here is your answer : not a question of story but actors: Jet Lee performs better and delivers both in Wu-Shu and realistic Wing Chun style.
An other question: What do you prefer: movies with magical Powers like "Kung Fu Cult" or "Budha's palm" or realistic ones?
Yep, unfortunately the kung-fu isn't the main theme of any film anymore. At least we can watch some action films where kung-fu is still playing its whole.
too much of editing killed this movie..especially flying scenes

in wing chun practioners would not be taught to kick higher than the waist because they go more heavy on working with the hands and elbows. wu shu is a martial art that looks really good in demonstrations and movies because the martial artist does all the high kicks and flips in the are.

I wonder how wong in this movie would do against donnie yen's ip man.

This movie sucks dude, Yip man all the way!
WingChunLova 3 years ago
yip man didn't have any worthy opponents. He was fighting against 3rd rate villains. Yip man against iron robe yim= yip man getting broken. YIP man the movie is better because its made 17 years later. Wong Fei Hung would clean yip mans clock.
hoppers001 3 years ago
Dude Ip Man fought strong ppl he was just better than them. i disagree with wingchunlova tho because this movie is excellent. I like Ip man better, but of course it's a matter of taste. wong fei hung prolly was better than Yip, but they're both legends so let's respect them.

I respect wong and yip but if I had to base it on movie portrayals and the stuff they did in real life then it's wong all the way.
hoppers001 2 years ago
the thing is the movies exaggerated wong way more than they did Yip. As awesome as it is visually, I'm pretty sure Wong didn't fly around and balance on ladders like in these movies. Donnie Yen's portrayal of Yip Man was more realistic.
xcalibur4ever 2 years ago
I agree that donnie yen's characters get more realistic portrayls. Or did wong fly around and balance on ladders???(just kidding) As for wong doing the superhuman stuff he did in the movies, you think this is outrageous, you haven't watched once upon a time in america where wong went bullet time and dodged bullets matrix style.

Just out of curiosity to everyone, do you all prefer this 'old-school' type of kung-fu or do any of you prefer the more modern approach at it like in "Enter The Dragon"?
Liberator130 3 years ago
i like both, also how is enter the dragon modern
unrealboot1 3 years ago
mordern martial arts movie is just sum guy who does action n fights ppl this was an acual martial arts epic the theme was martial arts n its uusally portaying a histroical martial artist figure
SoundwaveSuperior373 3 years ago
@Liberator130 Even if your comment is 3 years old :-)
If you look at FIST OF LEGEND (Jet Lee) which is a remake of FIST OF FURY (Bruce Lee), which introduced the modern style of Kung Fu (martial Art in the current times), here is your answer : not a question of story but actors: Jet Lee performs better and delivers both in Wu-Shu and realistic Wing Chun style.
An other question: What do you prefer: movies with magical Powers like "Kung Fu Cult" or "Budha's palm" or realistic ones?

gone are the days of good kungfu films.
reaphux 4 years ago 3
Yep, unfortunately the kung-fu isn't the main theme of any film anymore. At least we can watch some action films where kung-fu is still playing its whole.
