Chris... Too much money? Check out the NEW TDI SL.....problem with the Explores is that they respond to certain ferrous like silver and true silver depending on factors can be skipped over as well. With the TDI SL and TDI Standard or Pro, you can readily identify Iron v NON-Iron by a manipulation of the controls. Also, I know the test was for Silver but when it comes to Gold, the TDI Circuit has literally no equal, especially in a beach setting.
Thanks for the video. I was looking to get a TDI but when it pulled out so much JUNK. I don't want that. I knew that a pulse shows everything....but to see that and HEAR that....OUCH!!
Tom, some of the ground I hunt is heavily mineralized, so much so that any small variance on the GB knob will put it "out of balance"....would I still be able to discriminate out iron by turning down GB? I'm thinking if I try to turn GB down, it will simply start to pick up the ground. What do you think? I'd LOVE to be able to do that, because at the Civil War camps we hunt, there are TONS of nails.
Eagerly awaiting your reply. If you wanna send me a youtube message I'd really appreciate it.
If you didnt know Pulse Indicator metal detectors are not as good at discrimating targets because the reflected pulse length of various metals are not easily separated but they go deeper in high mineralized ground then Very Low Frequency (VLF) detectors. and the TDI is a very very good relic detector for culpeper virginia or bad ground, like a beach or rocky site with lots of magnetite.
Very informative, I'm finding it hard to obtain user info on the TDI so this has been very helpful. Any chance of another video putting the TDI through its paces?
Well there are definitely alot of detectors you can go with. I think for a beginner you'll probably waqnt one that doesn't have too many features that might confuse you. Something like the Ace 250 or Whites MXT.
If you want something you can grow with then the Minelab Sovereign or Minelab Explorer series are good ones. I use a Minelab Sovereign GT myself.
Throw that whites in the trash... Every site is full of many metals and the minelab will do the job and you can hunt instead of explaining how to set your detector...lol
Yip! waring shoes with any amount of metal on them while using a TDI is a no no, in fact you shouldn't wear any metal at all. No metal buttons on your cloths , no watch, no jewelry. I even take my wedding ring off ( yeer she knows about it ) and hold my hard plastic digger behind my back, all helping to purify the signal.
The DFX is a good machine, I hunted with one for over 2yrs but I could never get any serious depth out of it even after letting more experienced users tweak it for me.
My max depth with the DFX is pretty much my average depth with my Sovereign I hate to say.
I have been eying the new Vision but it's too early to tell just yet.
Good video......that TDI keeps up with the Explorer, but the Explorer is a natural at coin shooting. That nail test, as cumbersome as it seems, if consistent most of the time is actually handy. This video is an excellent example of what a real comparison test should be like. Keep 'em coming.
Really Nice Well Done Video Thanks!! And thanks to Tom on a great Demonstration.
I'm real curious about the discriminating PI's. What I wonder about in the dry sand...do I really need more depth than the 5" - 6" I get from my F4? Wet sand (or turf) I know the answer is yes...but not sure about the dry sand.
Yeah I know the feeling. I have had 2 Explorers but I am a Sovereign guy. The best way to learn the tones is to find someone who own one too and do a hunt with them. You can also check Findmall or Kinzli Coils for tips from experienced users.

For the record as a TDI owner I am able to go without problem on the beach 4' down for aluminum cans.

I would swing the TDI slower and it would go deeper you can swing a PI as fast as A VLF.

Tom, great to see you swing a White's Detector again.

Can you tell me how much depth you lose while trying to do the ground balance tweak to discriminate and identify iron.

@burlbark Burlbark........I can't say it lost much in the depth department. Maybe a quarter inch tops. Did pretty good considering.

worth the money??

@odee900 Hi Odee,
I think for the price a TDI goes for you'd be better off getting a Minelab or even a V3i if you're a Whites fan.
It's a good machine but I see it being a beach hunting detector more than anything.

Hi Rich,
I'd be happy to run this by Tom who is in front of the camera in this video. He is always willing to help fellow detectorists out as am I.
I'll see what we can do.
Thanks

Looking forward to it... thanks for your time and effort.

Hey Agile, Have you got any experance with the Minelab X-Terra 70? if so, How would you have it set to hunt Coin, Jewelry and Rellics? Great Demo!

Hey Agile. I'm new to metal detecting and would love to buy a detector. What's the best detector for a beginer?

I think the minelab would confuse me, and the TDI would drive me flat NUTS!!!! I'll stick with the V3...

How are you liking the V3? Been debating one. Using a Sovereign GT as of now.

Just bought the Minelab Explorer XS used and was discouraged with it until seeing your video. Now I need to find out what I'm doing wrong--thanks.
