@eileenh28 My hate for the 80's are mostly the 60/70's values that were killed, the music was COMPLETELY dumbed down (almost all 80's songs seem to have that horrible electronic drum beat), intellectualism was suddenly a bad thing (punk scene hmm?) and money became the 'Visible God' after the love&freedom ideals of the 60/70's. You tell me ONE good thing about the 80's, please!
@titusbeertsen And the 90s the 00s and 10s? are much different? Atleast in the 80s they knew they were being stupid...NOW? Everyone is bad taste stupid and money obsessed except they dont know it. 80s they knew it and was dared to go further.
@titusbeertsen And the 90s the 00s and 10s? are much different? Atleast in the 80s they knew they were being stupid...NOW? Everyone is bad taste stupid and money obsessed except they dont know it. 80s they knew it and was dared to go further.
The best thing about Sparks, (to me), was, they never took them selves seriously, but that intent wasn't so obvious to a first time viewer of their videos! If you like the static posturing in this vid, check out videos by the German band, "The Twins", their music is great, and probably the 'best band that you've never heard of before'. LOL (at least in this genre)
Ha, that bouncy 80s two-step (LOL at the Carlton comments)...the shoulder pads...the eyeliner! Gotta admit, digging the pie-throwing.
My funny misheard lyrics for this one...first couple times I heard the chorus, coulda sworn Russell was singing "All you ever think about is juicing me" (the line actually goes "All you ever think about exclusively").
ok guys the bass line at the start the den de den is A AA you can do that on A string open or E on fret 5 then the verse is for guitar or bass FRET 5 ON E STRING WHICH IS A THEN ITS A STRING ON FRET 5 WHICH IS D THEN E STRING TO FRET 3 WHICH IS G THEN THE CHORUS A G AG D G A
Oh man I love this video! Ron's reaction to the whole pie-in-the-face thing is just priceless. It's a subtle kind of meta-humour I think. He's the straight man so let him take a pratfall, and let it go unobserved by the others. It's pure genius by the way.
I first saw this a few years back and I think it's hysterical. In fact it's my favorite of their videos. It's subtle, whereas most "funny" videos made today would attempt to bludgeon you over the head with a sledgehammer. I personally think this was their way of giving a sly middle finger to MTV. "Yeah, we'll give you the typical, ultra-serious looking performance video...but Ron is going to get hit in the face with a pie over and over." I don't know...I love it.
Think the problem with this video was probably record company-related. I mean, in the 1980s videos where BIG and overblown. This is done on a shoestring.
Shame on you, treating Ron and Russell like that!
I was introduced to Sparks with this album when it was released, and I loved it. Tried to listen to some earlier stuff and hated it. Saw "Kick Ass" and heard "This town ain't big enough for the both of us" and they have been one of my favorites ever since.
@WaxHeadroom It's all yours brother! ...and you can enjoy it all in General Noriega's house in Panama City, Panama. It's unoccupied at the moment so we'll put your name over the threshold if you'd like. I'll take the sex! P.S. Reagan is gonna stink like hell when you dig up that bad actor.. Better stock up on some 20 Mule Team Borax. (and please, don't cut the coke with it) ..
Sparks sure knew how to combine funny lyrics with cathcy tunes, this song is only one of the many examples. Makes me wanna listen to it over and over again. And the seemingly pointless video just makes it even better. I wonder how those pies tasted...
so what if they snorted an 8ball each before they filmed this? The music industry has always been fueled by cocaine, and at no point more than in the 80's.
I never even knew about this till I randomly came upon it in a record collection, and bought it but it wasn't a full album just an lp and on the otherside there was a song called dance god dammit
On the other hand, Ron covered in pie doesn't bother me at all. Perhaps because it's pie, and Ron Mael, two great tastes which just might taste great together. One can only wonder.
Whenever I watch this video, when it first shows Russell dancing I think, "Oh, he doesn't look as bad as I remember." Then it cuts to that medium shot and I'm confronted with just how bizarre he looks with that makeup. It startles me every time. Not a good look at all, unless he was trying to emulate Baby Jane Hudson.
The most expensive music video ever made! They pulled out all the stops on this one! Makes me think of the "Baby Doll" video in the movie Tapeheads... another 80's classic!
Top to bottom, the best album I bought and listen to it, I swear, about every day for a year - Never heard of them till a friend who was hot for Jane Weidlan (or what ever her name is - from the Go - Gos) found where she was doing songs with these guys and bought the record. I borrowed it, taped while tearing down a garage in May 83 and listened to it later and it was the only tape I listened to that summer. To much info - oh well.
Nah. I love In Outer Space, this is one of my Sparks' favourite songs and this video is great just to make fun of all the 1980s clichés. It was a silly, silly decade (in mainstream music), and Sparks - as usual - did well joking about it.
