Predating the masterpiece "A Charlie Brown Christmas" by three years, Magoo has been too often neglected and unfairly eclipsed, but no lucky babyboomer has forgotten it.
This is strange: I love Jim Backus' voice, and I've loved this cartoon ever since I first saw it as a child - but I'VE ALWAYS HATED THE CHARACTER OF MR. MAGOO! Go figure - Merry Christmas, everyone.
Great childhood memories watching this. Just came across an updated short animation loosely based on a Christmas Carol... called A Very Buzzy Christmas
this is a TREASURE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY THANK FOR POSTING SUCH AWONDERFUL ANIMATION ! i AM 40 YRS OLD AND MY MOM AND DAD STILL BELIEVE IN cHRISTMAS!!!
Thanks for posting "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" in its full version. I had not seen that 3 1/2 minute introduction since 1964 when NBC after its third annual run "cut it" after TIMEX stopped (no pun intended) its full sponsorship of the program. (Yes, all three years 1962-64 featured those Classic John Chamron Swayzee TIMEX commercials during the telecasts)
@Mr76Yearsago Thank you so much for explaining this intriguing detail. I probably saw every broadcast from 1962 onwards, and certainly remember the TIMEX commercials ... but somehow hadn't exactly noticed that the 3-minute "Broadway" intro had vanished long ago. Thanks too to @christmasman2400v for posting this. Not sure why I loved it so much then or why it touches me so profoundly now after all these years. Perhaps because the original material, Dickens' story, was gold to start off with.
This eventually led to "THE FAMOUS ADVENTURES OF MR. MAGOO" (1964-'65), in which he portrayed other notable literary characters {Robin Hood, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dr. Frankenstein, Don Quixote, et. al}- most of them adapted by Barbara Chain.
Love Jim Backus and Royal Dano. Glad I'm just listening to this and not actually watching this because whatever video tape you got this off of was not kind to the coloring.
Where did you ever find this? I've been pining away for Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol for years. This cartoon is the first thing I think of when I gear up for Christmas. I have not seen it in about 40 years.
Thanks so very much for posting. Does anyone know where I could find the DVD or even a VCR tape?
Jim Backus, a mellifluous star of immense skill who deserved more recognition for his major performances than his relatively minor roles as Magoo and TH3rd. Love this show, however.
I have this on DVD but it is packed up with most of my possessions after foreclosure and difficult to get to, so thank you so much for posting this in its entirety. I have enjoyed this since I was a child and first saw it on TV. I am among the millions of unemployed so this means even more to me now. Thank you again and Merry Christmas. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
@ModGirl1967 I am sorry to hear of your unemployment and pray for your fortunes to turn around soon. I saw this in a theater when the local cinema used to show matinees on Saturday. My favorite part still remains the sound effect that the little boy makes when he goes off to by a turkey for Scrooge.
My family has watched this every year as we set up our tree.. I grew up on all the shows and music from my parents childhood, from the 50's and 60's. I was very upset that I might not be able to watch this this year, because I couldn't find a DVD copy. I was so happy to have found this. Thank you so much.
Alright, who disliked this? Whoever it was, he needs an ass kicking!
Seriously though, this is one of my absolute favorite Christmas specials. I've watched it every year since I was a tiny baby, thanks to my mom. This came out when she was 7. :)
Thanks so much for posting! I was feeling homesick (I'm away at college and not going home until the 16th) and this has cheered me up immensely.
Kicking the beggers cup out of the child s hand.. IThe child walks off broken hearted and later dies... Smybolic of Christ and the human race rejecting him... Touches me to the core..............
Absolutely priceless! I remember watching this back in 1962 and crying over Tiny Tim's illness. Everyone should watch this for it's sheer historical nostalgia.
According to Wikipedia, It was the first animated holiday special ever produced specifically for television ( first aired on December 18,1962 on NBC) and the only one until Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was first shown in December 6, 1964.
There were 4 Christmas programs in the 1960s that every child waited for--How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. But for some reason this special didn't last for more than a few years, don't know why. My brothers and I loved the Christmas shows, we were glued to the TV. Kids born after 1980 will never know the anticipation of waiting for the once-a-year special. Thanks for the upload!
Why don't they show more christmas specials on tv like they did when I was a kid in the 70s? There must have been 50 christmas cartoons plus live action specials.
@EasyListeningLounge yeah yeah blue ray sucks. Watch this on tv quality on tv is bettter than plastic, especially incoded on plastic which can be scratched and you can't watch you're blue ray anymore.
It's great to be back! back! back! indeed. This was the first movie I ever saw in a theater.
