In kumdo, getting hit in the chest means nothing. It's not a legal hit and you won't get any points for hitting it. The master is striking at his waist, which is one of four legal, point-scoring hits.
omg rly? lol this sucks... wtf. And what are the other 3 legal parts?
Still I dont get it, specially a chest hit. It should be a half hit at least, I cant imagine anyone fighting at full strength after hes bin sliced in the chest, he would bleed and the pain would in nearly all cases limit his movements and strenght. Thats why I dont get it... Its true that a waist hit like this would be fatal with that swordstyle cause of the way its swung.
@TheFreeFlow 4 parts: head, wrist, waist, and neck.
Remember, long time ago, warriors wore this armors, so it's difficult to slice through the chest. Even if you are able to slice the chest, it takes way too much energy and movement, making the opponent notice the move and counter easily. On the other hand, the waist saves more movement speed than slicing through the chest.
Go to Nashville Kendo Shiai and watch the two sensei Yazaki 7dan and Saba 5dan and tell me what you think of their definition and display of seme and tame. This is the example of "MY" understanding.
Ok but a useless attack is one with no seme and the original comment I posted was I feel at chika-mai there can be and is no seme. Purposely the intent has left once you pause at chika-mai. This is my opinion.
Opinions are like assholes, evryones got one, and most of them stink. Since seme is the pressure you put on your opponent, I don't see why it would disappear at a closer distance.
Even as a 3rd person, I feel uncomfortable with the way JARCHIE1973 says -- making judgement comparing to his own case in "polite" tone, which is even deceptive. Honestly, I think you wanted to say "That's not 7th dan's performance" in your mind.
Honestly you must be psychic. That is not what I meant and I was not being deceptive. I was not comparing. I was giving an opinion. Maybe you should stick to your own conversations 3rd person. Because me and Hero actually had a very good converstaion about kendo.
While everyone seems to understand how important seme is and so on, you have kept repeating your "opinion" and that made you look to be passing your judgement to others first.
Like I said and also you said in your personal message to me, the Nashville senseis demo was solely focusing on demonstrating good seme whereas this clip is just showing a kind of free practice between a sensei and a student.
And you did compare this to Nashville and my point was it is not apple-to-apple.
I do see that the master steps back or attacks immediately when the student gets in short interval. And maybe that was the intention that the master wanted to teach and let the student understand that it was wrong distance.
My point is, the practice situation is different from that in the clip of Nashville kendo club senseis. All in all, you seem to have a long way to practice your "mind" to get rid of one-sided view.
i have practiced with "yazaki sensei" i nanadan, and i have also seen videos of your matches. and let me tell you, your understanding is not like them.
Very interesting style. I noticed that they are fighting at chika-mai almost the whole time. Is that on purpose? I saw almost no noticable seme, as they were too close. Am I mistaken?
i dont' want you to take this the wrong way, but i think to make a statement like" there can be no seme in chika ma" doesn't illustrate a very good understanding of what "seme" and "tame" is. Just practice more, my guess is your have less than 10 years under your belt. Just wait a couple more years and see if your view changes.
I have practiced for quite some time. But my style of kendo and training dictates what I understand. "At this moment in time I respectfully do not see seme at chika-mai at al"l. Also the amount of years practiced does not always indicate the level of skill.
To all of you of the whole world.
Kumdo is stupid sports in imitation of Japanese old KENdo of Korea.
Please stop it immediately if you learn Kumdo now.
And I suggest to learn KENdo.
KEN of "KENdo" is a meaning called the swords, and "the DO" is a meaning called the ways.
kum of Kumdo does not have a meaning at all.
Japanese Bushido and keen mind is included in "KENdo".
There is mind to respect the enemy even if it is an enemy.
Please learn "KENdo" if you want to train true Bushido mind.

This is a GREAT video!
I can not think of a better way for a student to learn, than to take on this Master.
I watched and felt bad, the student kept attempting to go up high for a head hit, and got hit in the chest every time....EVERY time....

there are many different interpretations..... Also, that's how master seong always starts off during practice, he wants the students to attack more.
In addition, it's not that they are not attacking but again, he wants the students to attack more.

There is seme, maybe not the kind your used to seeing though.
You can do seme from any distance.
ob1kendobe 2 years ago
i respectfully disagree. there can be no seme at close interval.
JARCHIE1973 2 years ago
Ever wathced a hachidan Taikai? They fight at Chika Mai all the time. So they dont seme?
Seme comes from teh intention to attack with the ability to attack at anytime. So I dont think your argument holds any weight.
If you stay at chika mai, its lessens the amount of things you can do, but thats it. I have fought with those guys before, there is plenty of seme.
