I'm not sure if Archaeologists care about holiness.

What they do care about is finding artifacts from antiquity. Their logic for digging their is firstly, the sheer significance of that area more than any other in Jerusalem.

Second, given the amount of time both temples stood for (over 800 years) there is reason to believe they will find a great deal .
