That's only because the models today don't have that magnetic factor. Designers and agencies are just picking the same type of women with no outstanding features or beauty. A majority of people don't admire or want to be like today's models (except the Victoria Secret models), so the public doesn't give them the attention. Without attention, you can't sell magazines or products. The public relates "real" beauty more towards actresses and singers nowadays.
