  • For those people wondering, Richie Cole has the alto saxophone solo near the end of the song. I went to see the Buddy Rich Band many times in the late 1960's and 1970's with my dad when Richie was touring with the band. Richie has a solo career these days. I am glad to see some of band videos from the 70's....better quality than I would imagine considering the sound is pretty good. Buddy was the Master of the drums!

  • I've never yet seen a handsome male drummer, yet all the female drummers are gorgeous. What's with that?

  • @D3maine you need to meet more drummers...

  • @D3maine - Gene Krupa, Dennis Wilson and Tommy Lee are appalled at your statement!

  • This version pales in comparison to the one captured on his Mercy, Mercy, Mercy release live form Vegas.

  • The first fifteen seconds exceeds what 95% of drummers today could pull off.

  • Dig the cat on the Hammond!

  • Buddy Rich Is King of the UPPER and Lower Nile Ruler of all Master Of the Universe!

When he was behind a set of Drums!!!

  • Jessis, Buddy can swing. Most big bands can't swing, but this one does - hard! Thanks, Buddy!!

  • Great tune.

  • Looks like John Denver on sax at 3:00!

    Holy cow this is burning!

  • Looks like John Denver on sax at 3:00!

  • The only other Big Band drummer that could realistically compete with Buddy's drive + fury was Chick Webb.

  • Fuck rock, fuck metal, fuck rap, and fuck travis barker. Buddy Rich is fucking awesome and refused to play that stupid crap and always played music his whole life

  • you have youre king of rock and roll you have youre godfather of soul and you have old blue eyes but you have buddy rich who has no equal EVER!

  • amen brother !

  • Wow! The bass player and Buddy are locked solid in this song. This proves just how musical and understated Buddy could be, he's just hanging back and laying down a huge groove here.

  • @Diatonic5th "... he's just hanging back and laying down a huge groove here."

There's actually a lot of technical work here.

  • @richcapo Indeed there is! I've spent many years trying to play along to Big Band charts of this band, and I still have no idea how Buddy did what he did. lol!

  • ake a look at the real deal. No buddy could fuck with buddy! This is the true drum animal at work!

  • this is real groovy..thanz

  • A little info about this clip: I was able to get this from the NRK(Norways national broadcasting) archives over 10 years ago. It was filmed at the "Njaardhallen", an indoor sports arena still in use here in Oslo. Only three tunes were recorded but , to my knowledge never broadasted. I traded the clip with a few people in the US, the first one being Dave Weckl. Im happy that you are enjoying the clip! Greetings from Oslo,Norway.

  • Buddy was the one and only. A lot of drummers I liked, but Buddy was the ultimate. and as far as crossing over, jazz drummers can play rock better than rock drummers can play jazz. Rock guys are so locked into that 8th note feel, than can't swing. My opinion

  • I'm giving a standing O for that performance! WOW! :-)

  • i agree with waynedrumpal learn jazz and others will be easy..coz i learnt other way round and i cant get jazz its fucking hard

  • That's great, just like the original album version, Thanks for posting that, first viewing for me.

  • That's great, just like the original album version, Thanks for posting that, first viewing for me.

  • "Love The Drummer".........

  • Haha real party music!!!

  • MY GOD!

  • Buddy Rich and Django Reinhardt are the reason to start listening jazz!

  • is art pepper with the band

  • @MrDoniac Art Pepper was with the band for a short time in 1968.

When he was with Buddy, his spleen ruptured and he was taken to the hospital. They weren't going to do anything for him, but Buddy signed fror him and got things taken care of ~

  • Man that "John Denver " can blow a mean sax....!!!!!! HAHA

  • @shermanater87 hahaha john denver on sax hahaha I had no idea what you were talking about then out of no where I was saying "holy shiet its john denver " you hit that one dead on!!!

  • Thanx Jack, at least sombody picked up on the mop- top & the wire-rims !! lol

  • Thanx Jack, at least someone picked up on the mop-top & the wire-rims !! lol

  • Mop -Top & the wire-rims..! ! .

    Thats the legendary Richie Cole

    ......you Birdbrain!!!!!

  • That's richie cole.

  • Probably Pat Labarbera on tenor on far left?

  • Cliff Almond on tenor sax? lol

  • Pat Labarbera was the lead tenor at this time.

  • Buddie =Rokks= THISZ.....

  • The arrangement under the sax solo is mind blowing... at 3:35 something in my head broke

  • Who plays on Hammond organ?

  • That's Dave McRae.

  • forget about classic rock and rap ...or should i say ....crap ...you want to realy play drums ....learn jjjjjjjjazz....then the other styles will be a piece of cake....

  • @wayne drupal Well said... And with that, I HUMBLY take my hat off to the AMAZING jazz drummers in the world! I pride myself in being a "GOOD" Hard Rock drummer but I admit that my skills pale by comparison to drummers like Buddy, Louis Bellson, etc... I attended a clinic with Chad Wackerman and Allen Holdsworth doing some jazz improv once... My chin rested on the carpet the entire performance! To comprehend the basic structures of the material was near genius... And I am not!

  • @waynedrumpal If ,Jazz aint "In you it will Never come Out". Learn it or Not. Too many so called Drummers eatin Cake these Days ...

  • what's the name of the friar on that hammond?

  • @pootershnitzel The cat on the hammond is Dave McRae, hes currently teaches at The Australian Institute of Music. I know this cause I study there and hes my teacher :)

  • @waynedrumpal haha i once knew a drummer who could swing very well, but he couldnt even play a simple maroon 5 song to save his life

  • top class fab,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • I think it's wrong to stereotype all kids this way. I know plenty of kids that love classic music (like jazz, classical, blues). Also, if you go to any high school you'll see plenty of kids wearing zeppelin and pink floyd tees so kids evidently are listening to classic rock!

  • It's sad to see this music dying. Nowadays kids aren't even listening to classic rock, it's all rap crap.

  • Tight.

  • He played ;w/such precision ,innate EAR,never same stuff twice and feel Through the Dark . Noone played like he does .He preached and teached ,yet the Drummers I ,hear now are robotic ,stiff , clone like noobs , not that we are better yet some of these comments yearn for some videos ,.,To see him" Live" would have out all these nubiees right down in place on THE FLOOR AND SCARED TO BOW FOR mercy.........................So be careful to what impresses you these days ,

  • I went to a Buddy Rich show in about '82, and there were three high-school drummers sitting near me wearing Neil Peart T-shirts. They told me their band director "made them come to this old guy's show, and what's so great about him anyway?" Halfway through the first chart, they were mesmerized and at the end of the show were trying to get backstage to meet him, and saying "Oh, Man, I had no idea the things this guy could do!"

(BTW, I deeply respect Peart, so please nobody jump on me.)

  • Thanks for The Positive -They, were very lucky indeed to have seen Him Then .and He was still playing with extreme creativity and authority -Dont Forget He led and the Band played up to Him. Very different approach for Drummers now..

  • @swpctx HaHa, came for a random Buddy Rich listen. In 1979 I went to a Buddy Rich show with 2 other HS drummer friends, we sat 10-15 feet from Buddy. At that time of course it was all about Rush/Peart/2112, and LedZep/Bonham for us. To this day, the greatest drumming performance I've ever seen by the greatest drummer I've ever seen or heard. Techniques to this day I still don't understand or can do. Swear he got 20 different sounds off his hi-hats. Roar of '74 - bought that album the next day.

  • i could listen to this all day long, and this just made my day better...

  • Comment removed

  • thanks much for posting this tune. the best from the Rich era. saw him 3 times in the US. he never missed a beat, blaizing fast. poor kids today - never had a chance to hear real music.

  • damn kids and thier rock and roll....uggg!hahaha

  • jazz, rock, or blues, everybody's gotta love a good ol' 1-4-5

  • Buddy is the best cooker- swinger-driver of three/four

  • 1:57 the origins of the blast beat right there lol

  • For the first time ever, I heard and saw buddy Rich build off of another solo. The organ.

  • Buddy Rich Rules!! and his band is so smooth!!!

  • This is great!

  • Biuti!

  • that is CRAZY! he swings his wrist sideways rides the bottom then crashes the top holy #@!&^%$(*& batman! it goes by so fast you would miss it if you didn't know it was there just like me until MrZol pointed it out thanks dude

  • OH MY GOODNESS !! DID ANYBODY NOTICE BUDDY UNDER HITTING THE CYMBAL@ 2:20-221 ? i been watching this for a year now and just noticed it !!!

  • he does that all the time...no big deal seriously.

  • For you guys asking about more from this concert. I got this footage out from the norwegian broadcasting archives over 10 years ago, then traded it with a few people in the US, the first one being Dave Weckl actually.only 3 tunes exists and it was NEVER broadcasted. The venue was an old handball arena still in use here in Oslo. Im happy so many can now enjoy Buddy at his best in oslo,Norway, 1970:)

  • rrdrums110: I completely agree with you!!!

  • what+s the name of the organ player

  • Some idiot tried to convince me that gadd could swing w/this and was as important of a drummer as Buddy. Can you believe it? Buddy rich is was and will be the best drummer to breathe on earth and there really can't be an argument about it.

  • RUDE DRUM ;Buddy had a way of utilizing both sides of his brain while playing ,precision, weaving through a horn chart ,like nobodys, ps & qs,He is the consumate Example of a musician.. Oh and DRUMMER.....

  • @DYNODRUM Only two guys got that... Drummers?

  • @rrdrums110 f$ckin A rrdrums!!

  • @rrdrums110 No doubt about it that Buddy Rich ONE of the best drummers is on earth.

Before you try to give an opinion about Steve Gadd...watch his youtubes-clips.

You want to have some more....try to find,

Louiss Bellsson, Lionel Hampton yes...Hampton, Alvin Queen, Ed Thipgen,

Jeff Hamilton on youtube.....to mention a few...

  • @rrdrums110 Gadd doesn't swing like this, no way. He doesn't have the chops to, much less the creativity and soul.

  • @rrdrums110 i agree, nobody wil ever come close to buddy.

  • @rrdrums110 true, but now his time is over and there is many greats emerging that will overtake him only in terms of creativity. that is my personal opinion.

  • Somebody get a fire extinguisher for the keyboard player 'cause he's smokin'!!!!!

  • This is amazing. Had to watch it over and over.

  • this iz damn swingy!! i love it!

  • This is a good version, but the recorded version of 'Preach and Teach' that's on the 'Mercy Mercy' album is even better!

    Thanks Buddy. We miss you.

  • Awesome tune! Thanks for posting.

  • Anyone out there ever hear a more killer tune in waltz time, no less. Buddy drove a big band like no other ever did or ever will. The God of drums!

  • A more killer tune in 3/4? Yes. "Goodbye Yesterday" with Don Menza rolling up and down the scales.

  • Yeah, Buddy played superbly in 3.

Also, "Group Shot" is another hard swinger in 3.

One of Buddy's best charts ~

  • Group Shot is in 12/8

  • fucking amazing intro....

  • did buddy ever do any dongs with a blues band???

  • Has anyone ever heard a waltz this swinging? No drummer past-present-future- will EVER come close to Buddy. A one time, freak of nature gift from GOD.

  • Weckle, duh.

  • Fuckin groovin baby!!!!!

  • WOW! that's how it goes! I dig the sax solo the cat took, and the whole bar break of nothing, wow!. And how about the cool organ ride! Man, a cool 6/8 groove...Cool......Thank you Buddy!!

    randomacsess...

  • Sax solo - Richie Cole

  • I thought is was John Denver!

  • Now that's funny!

  • You are correct sir - and for the $64,000.00 ... what town from ? ?

  • NY? I dunno lol I think it's NY tho

  • Close but no cigar - Trenton NJ - Ewing Township to be more precise as my older cousin attended Ewing Twp. HS with him

I used to see Richie at a local jazz club in South Trenton called Lanzi's Lounge on Liberty street.

  • You lucky bastard.

  • che figooooooooooo

  • It looks so easy to play drums, when he's playing it :O :-(

  • AWESOME! This has always been my favorite Buddy Rich song since I first heard it on vinyl when I was a kid. The version I knew had piano instead of organ. This is extremely cool! Thanks for uploading it!

  • Bigbread...... those cymbals are still the best money can buy and the family is the oldest family business still running in the world........

  • man buddy's kit sounds absolutely perfect...i assume he is using his slinger land's on this tune?

and the cymbals must be ziljidan's right?

does anyone know if they still make those cymbals anymore?

the ride is just beautiful, clear and cutting and the crashes as always are perfect.

just shows when you are good at something, you never use anything but the best and buddy did that for sure.

  • Awesome. Its like Soft Machine meets Buddy Rich.

  • anymore from this concert?

  • who in the hell is that alto player?? that guy is killin' that sax! Shit that was great to listen to!

  • The alto man is Richie Cole ~

  • love the intro ... great

  • Poor Toby. It must be hard on a daily basis being that thick. The easiest of tasks must seem a nightmare for Toby as his brain doesn't work properly.

  • unreal.

  • thank you for this video. Prior, i had only one version of this chart (Mercy Mercy). Hammond organ! As an interpreter of big band arrangements, arguably the best ever. Listen to the sound coming out of those drums, he justs FIRES UP a band, an energy that transcends just speed and flash.

  • that toby guy is a knucklehead.

  • for a very musical BR solo search ' Buddy Rich West Side Story 1974 ' its toward the end

  • Toby, if you had said that comment on one of Buddy's show boat solos or one of his drum battles, maybe your ignorance would be somewhat accepted by people who actually understand drumming and music, but to say that Buddy Rich is a "banger not a drummer" on a video like THIS, a chart like THIS, is just complete stupidity, if all you hear from Buddy Rich is "banging" especially in a performance like this, I have no idea what you think musicality is, because this is clearly an example of it.

  • Hey Toby-You just showed that you know nothing about drumming or Buddy Rich.

  • Travis Barker is not even in the top 100 drummers.

Rich used to shit better things than Travis Barker.

  • amazing comment!

  • not only is this the funniest comment I have seen in a long time, it is sooooooooo true

  • Damn... evry time i wach buddy, he just blow me away, go buddy ;)

  • peart. moon. bonham. Yeah. Right.

How can you rockers even begin to think that any drummer, especailly these rock hacks, could EVER take Buddy. Listen to this chart. Listen to it!!!! Buddy's band at this time was the greatest band on planet Earth. There was no music being played any better than this. None. And no other drummer in history, then or since, could EVER take Buddy.

  • Dinosaurs kick ass and so does Buddy Rich. You on the other hand are a poorly informed,Joke Punk Lovin Imbecile who probably thinks his shit hitting water is rhythm.PENIS!!!

  • i cant believe this guy!! everyone has told him to shut the fuck up once and for all but he kep on making stupid comments like this, ccept it, you can like tra-bisexual barker but he is filthy shit at the ide of buddy rich!

  • kicks ass!

  • Just great, thats Buddy (Bernard Richman)

  • is that Nick Milo on organ.?...cat wails?

he also played with Tower of Power....

  • No. That's Dave McRae on organ.

  • i played with Dave at Ronnie Scott's..

he also used to play in Soft Machine spin-off .. "Matching Mole".

  • try as hard as i do, i just cant play drums as well as i want to.

buddy's drumming obviously is a big inspiration.

just trying to feel comfortable enough to do a basic single stroke roll is difficult..for me

  • does there exist any clips of the tropicana hotel gig buddy and his band did in April 1970?

also isnt it about time all the filmed performances of the buddy rich big band brought out on dvd?

  • is young "ritchie cole in this clip?

    i'm sure i spotted him!

  • Dang! It always amazes me how good each individual player is that Buddy chose.

  • I remember reading in some liner notes that Buddy considered his band 15 Ferraris in a world of Pinto's.

  • I may be wrong but i think he was describing himself!

if you got it you got it...

  • Yeah I read that too. I guess you gotta have that attitude sometimes to be truly successful.

  • that organist is incredible.never heard one with his band and the band is on fire

  • Damn the band sounds good.

  • Damn..havent heard this one in 20 years..Believe it was from the "Mercy Mercy" LP..1968 Live From Caesers...Buddy always had great young players in his band..sometimes he would fire them between sets..but that was Buddy....GREAT CLIP!!!............Thanks.

  • Holy shit is right. Un-freakin' believable, but then Buddy always is.

  • holy shit

  • Dig the Seinfeldian " puffy shirts " Great freakin' band and Buddy is a true master

  • i think my favourite thing about buddy and his big band is that all the sound footage from the past sounds so incredibly awesome its almost unbeliveable that it was made so long ago it sounds so crisp and clean

  • thats because it was good..:-)

  • at 4:16 when buddy ends the song and the way he hits the hi-hat, just his mannerism's. he's untouchable forever.

  • It's like when Tiger Woods hits a golf ball. The way he does is just flat out better than anyone.

  • MY FUCKING GOODNESS BUDDY RICH !!!

  • how cool to see this clip on youtube! Im proud to say im the "orginator" of this footage. i got it out from the Norwegian broadcasting archives throught a friend over 10 years ago and traded it around with a few people in the US. It had NEVER been broadcasted and only 3 tunes exists! glad you are enjoying it and thanks to brian for posting:)

  • Are the other clips avaialble anywhere?

  • Great clip !!! Buddy burns as allways!

  • AWSOME! Buddy Rulez! And so does the Band! Thx brian740 for sharing this.

  • Richie Cole just coming into his own too.

  • My first responce on you yube, Can't say it better then you guy's. Also my hero!

  • Wow! Thanks for uploading this one! A great chart that I first heard in 1969! And the great Richie Cole on alto. So much written about Buddy on these clips--and that's great, the legend lives on. I'll just add that nobody played in 3 like Buddy. A tremendous feel for jazz-waltz.

  • Listen to the same tune on the recording "Mercey Mercey Mercey" live in Las Vegas 1967.. Great version.

  • I always loved this chart. Used to almost die trying to play it. I miss him and that band. I saw him do this in Carnegie Hall with my teacher Phil Greiss. Third row seats. I thought Phil would throw his sticks away after it.

  • A wonderful clip. He propelled a band like no other. Sad, no other response. My idol...........

  • As far as big band drummers, or any drummers for that matter, I agree with you..Buddy was the absolute BEST! I love Jake Hanna, Mel Lewis, Louis B, Harold Jones, Rufus Jones, etc...but Buddy had that something extra. The way he kicked the brass, filled in between the notes...simply amazing!!!
