The remake, which came out in 1983 and had Faye Dunaway, John Gielgud, Alan Bates, and some other really good actors, could have been a great movie. Instead it was a major disappointment that was actually barely released in the U.S. Further proof that Michael Winner as director or screenwriter was 99 times out of 100 a loser during his sorry career. Peace.
As far as this movie was concerned; at the time, it was not allowed to be shown in the most parts of the United States. Why? The lead actress showed for too much cleavage. However, this movie is listed amongst some of the greatest classic movie ever made, in the country of England.
Interestingly enough, where the US found showing too much breast offensive, England found too much leg offensive. As this movie was banned in the US, in 1945. Betty Grable's "the Pin-up Girl" was banned in England.
the first airing of a couple in the same bed was Lucille Ball and Rick Ricardo, in 1949. The was before the TV censors got into the mix, in the early 1950's. Interestingly enough, the Brady Bunch had Mike and Carol in the same bed.. they also had 6 kids who all shared a bathroom that, apparently, didn't have a toilet. Ity wasn'tintil the early 1970's before censors began to realize, it was okay to have a toilet in a bathroom. First interracial kiss? Kirk and O'hura on Star Trek
Lool, she looks like Vivien Leigh and that guy there looks like Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind. But I guess at that time all actors and actresses looked like that...
In Fact the First Televised airing of a couple sleeping in the same bed was the Flinstones! Thats right, a cartoon was the thing that crossed the line.
that was red flagged for too much cleavage? back then, i suppose, but these 21st century standards and practices? I had to strain my eyes looking for whatever it was she was flagged for in the place
I wonder if the original "un- cleaved" version" is still available, and able to export to this side of the pond. ? but then the US is still a bit of a prude in odd ways. Thanks Puritan's !!
Margaret Lockwood - The Bitch from Hell, cruel, selfish, twisted - met her match in James Mason - turned all Nicey Nicey in the end - but as usual - too little too late lol. One of the all time British Classics.
"Cleavage in geology is from 1816. The sense of "cleft between a woman's breasts in low-cut clothing" is first recorded 1946, when it was defined in a "Time" magazine article as the "Johnston Office trade term for the shadowed depression dividing an actress' bosom into two distinct sections" [Aug. 5]."
"In the case of the Time Magazine story the film in question was called The Wicked Lady and originated in Britain.
The censors decided it was just too racy for American eyes and the English film makers re-shot the offending scenes cleaving the film into two slightly different editions, one for each side of the pond."

well.... this was in the 40's. "sex" in movies was a lot more tactful. Hell, parents even had separate beds in the movies till, like, the 60's.
