So, how the hell does comprehensive sex education prevent pregnancies, STDs, AIDS, and so forth? Aren't you just adding fuel to the fire by being anti-abstinence? Face it people! Only promiscuous, horny, immoral, irreligious, impulsive, and easygoing people want to defeat abstinence education.
@TheLavish99 Comprehensive sex education teaches students how to protect themselves if they do choose to engage in sexual activities. They discuss how STD and pregnancy can be prevented through the use of condoms, birthcontrol, and practicing abstinence. Teaching kids abstinece only doesn't tell them how to be safe. On top of this the lessons given in school can not be biased towards religion. They must present all the facts which means they must discuss options other than just abstinance.
@pixeia okay it maybe worthwhile for schools to teach about risks, unhealthy behaviors, and how to protect oneself and yeah separation of church and state is what our government is supposed to be about. But, again, I DO NOT need any promiscuous, horny, immoral, irreligious, impulsive, easygoing, and sex-obsessed person to tell me that abstinence a wrong thing. My opinion is my opinion and your opinion is yours. Sorry but I am from an upbringing that's more classy, conservative, and splendid!
@TheLavish99 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to seem as if I was attacking your opinion. I agree that abstinene can be a good choice and I was just answering your question about how comprehensive sex education can help. However, I do have a question for you. How could you say that your opinion is your opinion but then place someone else's opinion below yours by stating it's from a "promiscuos, horny, immoral..." and so forth point of view?
@TheLavish99 It not that Abstinence is a wrong thing. This is very subjective. To one person Abstinence may be the right choice to another its not realistic. Abstinence only sex ed tactics are usually intended to scare children into picking Abstinence and not teaching them about alternatives. This can be dangerous because generally speaking most who commit to Abstinence don’t follow through, and without adequate knowledge on protection, shit happens
@TheLavish99 I’d also like to challenge the assumed double standard that you hold. You state that "Only promiscuous, horny, immoral, irreligious, impulsive, and easygoing people want to defeat abstinence education.” How is this making things better? Adding unjustified insults to people who want to have different views put in sex ed class. so that abstinence can be taught as one option from many rather than THE OPTION
@TheLavish99 I won't support the current abstinence only because it doesn't work. Those "just say no"-brainwashing seminars have been running since Reagan and STD's and ignorance is at all time high amongst teens.
First you need to educate the kids on how to protect yourself WHEN 90% of them will engage in sex when puberty hits. After they all know how to behave responsibly, only then can you also tell that they can choose not to have sex at all. Statistics tell that most won't choose that.
@TheLavish99 you are not a majority, the national average is 8 sexual partners in a life time. kids need to know about how to have safe sex. should kids be encouraged to practice abstinence? definitely, but not as an only option.
"Only promiscuous, horny, immoral, irreligious, impulsive, and easygoing people want to defeat abstinence education" Wow, had no idea that finding abstinence education completely lacking in practical advice made me into all of these things which I am not. The "irreligious" people in the world exist because the "religious" people, of which I assume you are one, talk like complete dickheads.
Read my comments, in the view all comments. Also, hear Jason's talk to teens "Romance without regrets" from my link. There Jason makes an excellent presentation proving what we already know in our hearts (but won't admit) that abstinence does work. I'm in my 15th year and NO Hiv, Aids, Costly Child support that cuts your check to 99.80 a week. Abstinence works and the girls are signing up, so guys are fighting it, lol.
It doesn't work. Numerous studies have shown it, and yet the federal government as well as state governments continue to poor tens of millions of dollars annually into these programs.
Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:52pm EDTWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Abstinence-only education programs meant to teach children to avoid sex until marriage failed to control their sexual behavior, according to a U.S. government report.
Young People must be taught that abstinence is the one and only holy way to live, and that birth control of any and all sorts is a tool of the devil that murders babies. We MUST teach the children that if they fornicate God will smite them! We must keep the young ladies of this nation pure and virtuous.
Yep, and as we all know, this isn't America! It's the land of Christian totalitarianism!
Nobody is going to argue that abstinence shouldn't be taught as the only surefire way to avoid STDs and HIV, and nobody will argue that it prevents potential psychological depression. That isn't the issue. The issue is the forcing of Christian beliefs on those who may not WANT to be.
What about the homosexuals, eh? They have to abstain for life since they can't marry?
I hate stupid people especially these fucking holier-than-thou abstinence assholes I'd much rather hang out with pegans at an orgy than be brainwashed by people that cannot and will not think for themselves at some franchised, bloated, white collar, blue blood, house-o'-god (lol house-o'-waffles reference) type church
what's more sexually appealing? someone with oozing sores, or genital parasites, or an incurable, potentially deadly virus.. OR someone who has never been handled by another lover all her/his life. Pure, and ready to do you for the rest of yours? stay clean until MARRIAGE people. it's the godly way
apparently you have never heard of a condom, or any type of safe sex.having sex is like human nature dude. and before you reply by saying i'm "sinful", a slut, or un-holy, no im no of thoose, in fact, i havent even had sex yet, so yea SHUT DOWN!!! lol
You believe a condom can stop all STD's, I can tell you are young and immature, talk to your doctor about the other STD's you can contract such as HPV. When you do have sex I hope you use the condom properly and it doen't break or slip off because if it does it may ruin your life, not to mention the depression that may come with not being able to deal with sex emotionally at a young age. Abstain from sex hopeflly until you are married or at least an adult.
dont tell me what to do, you have no idea how old i am, take your religious practices some where else, i can choose my own decisions, because like i said you have no idea how old i am.
Most of us who actually pay attention in health class are able to figure out that STDs are not always stopped by condoms, and most of us are ESPECIALLY aware that HIV isn't always stoped by condoms. Virtually anybody who has heard of STDs and HIV can figure this out, yet somehow, we're not getting that message? Gimme a break.
We want teenagers to abstain from sex, but something tells me we want them ALIVE more.
@brandonjaylocke My mom waited till marriage and divorced two years later. So don't be an idiot, not everyone spends the "rest of their lives" together. And learn a thing or two about safe sex and talking to your partner about previous encounters not everyone gets sick and some STDs don't even show themselves until years down the line. Your attitudes disgusting me and you're part of the reason that when people DO find out they have an STD they're scared to talk to someone and not get tested.
This is throughly insipid. Abstinence is the way God intended us to live. It can save your life from HIV and save your butt from getting ichy, oozing sores. And yes condoms do have a significant FAILURE rate in both protecting from STDs and pregnancy. Abstinence is a duh..
when condoms are used properly, they have a 2% failure rate. When used improperly, it's higher; but hey, if we EDUCATE people on how to use them properly, that means a lot of people will be VERY protected.
abstinence is stupid to start with. wait until marriage, ok so if i get married and it turns out she has a penis what am i going to do then.having sex is ok as long as you are careful know about all the STDs and use birth control, condoms, etc
It's highly likely that people who believe in abstinence-only education also believe that gay marriage is "immoral". Therefore, according to their reasoning, homosexuals would never have intercourse.
Actually, people who choose to live a homosexual lifestyle have the right to get married. Just not to each other. The issue is about choices. If people who choose to live a homosexual lifestyle were to be abstinent for a long period of time, they may come to realize that they were not homosexual to begin with. if they cannot, then there is a lack of self-control. I would encourage any homosexual to be abstinent for one year. They may learn alot about themselves that they didnt realize
Are you speaking from experience? If not, how could you possibly know that? If a heterosexual person were to abstain for a long period of time, would he or she suddenly realize that he or she was not heterosexual to begin with?
The only choice they make is to be true to themselves. They don't choose to be homosexual, they were born that way and they deserve the right to not be criticized for being who they are.
I am speaking from the experiences and interviews and research I have done in the homosexual community. I have yet to find evidence that proves that they are born that way. Everyone that I have talked to thus far can pinpoint a specific time in their lives that influenced the decision to be that way. My hope is that you do not lump J.A.M. in the "Abstinence-Only" persona. The bottom line is we care and bring out the best in everyone no matter who they are, and not be critical towards anyone
There is lots of scientific evidence that homosexuality & sexual attraction is wired into the brain. Gay males have similar brain structures as straight females. Male hormone levels in the womb affects sexual orientation.
They can pinpoint the times they have recognized their homosexuality, not choosen. No one just chooses to be in a group that carries social stigma that causes hate crimes against them & teens to commite suicide because they couldn't get rid of their feelings of attraction.
Yup. I find it interesting that male homosexuals have slightly larger hypothalamus regions than straight men. The same for gay women compared to straight women.
@kiwisunshine5233 I didn't wake up one day and decide " My life is pretty boring, I'm going to be bissexual!" When I realized my feelings for another girl, I denied it at first, and passed it off as sisterly love. When I couldn't anymore, I cried. Over and over. No one chooses that.
@jamamerica if you can't find proof that you are born that way, then you should dig a little deeper in your research. It has been PROVEN that they are born that way. I'm assuming you are heterosexual. Can you honestly say that you can wake up tommorow morning and CHOOSE to all of a sudden like men. (assuming you are a man) Sure you can say that to yourself and perform those acts but you would just be living a lie. You can't choose your hormones or what turns you on. Very simple logic.
Just like interracial couples have the right to get married in 1950, just not to each other. If people were to just not have sex with people who just so happen to be outside of their race, they'll realize that they were never attracted to people outside their sex in the first place. If they cannot blindly stay away from the person they actually love & are attracted to just because some bitch says they should, then there is a lack of self-control.
I believe in abstaining from sex until marriage, but not from such things as kissing and stuff. However, I'm educated on sex, STI's, birth control, pregnancies, etc. It's good to learn about all of it. :)
It's one thing to challenge youth to wait for a while on sexual activity, but scaring the hell out of them and telling them a condom is a provision for sin is irresponsible! If you want the information that your church won't tell you about premarital sex in the Bible go to the site below.
