  • After the Koran burnings, It's (fixin') getting ready to break luce........Mark my words.

  • HELL.BROKE.LUCE!

  • While listening to this song you can taste the desert sand in your teeth, the sweat, blood and fracas. Tom Waits depicts the scene perfectly in a way that only he can.

  • The song ended, so he shot himself.

  • jim cherewick loves tom waits. don't believe me? 'little weasel house show' on my youtube page i do earth died screaming at 3 : 50. buy bad as me. damned gooood.

  • Fantastic album, best track on it.

Although the original soundtrack to FMJ still fits it best for me, simply because it's so unfitting. The Surfing Bird sequence, for example, could not have been as legendary if it were another song.

  • I would rather have this album than a weeks meal.

  • 5 people ate a goat.

  • This strikes me as the flipside to Massive Attack's "Flat of the Blade". That song's very subtle and electronic and emphasises loneliness and melancholy, whereas this is ugly, organic and angry as hell. Astounding.

  • bloody awesome, Mr. Waits

  • WAIT!!!*smokes a bowl*....OK ready.

  • If you combine Tom Waits, Keith Richards and Flea, it's this AWESOME!

  • GET ME 'NOTHER BODY BAG, THE BODY BAG'S FULL AND, MY FACE WAS SCORCHED-SCORCHED.. I MISS MY HOME I MISS MY PORCH-PORCH.. CAN I GO HOME IN MARCH?! MARCH!!!!

  • Yeah, folks, that track is fn brilliant...the man's a genius.... !! I have nothing but awe and respect for him and his work......and to think his first album was in 1973 right?...He's still going and seriously kicking ass !..... there aren't too many like Mr Waits around

  • R.I.P Jeff

  • perfect sincronization

  • Perfect images. Best Iraq War song with best Vietnam War movie.

  • Спасибо Tom!

  • great record- great movie too- (like apocalypse now better though)

  • Its about marine 'Jeff Lucey' you suffered from ptsd and took his life when he returned from service. not sure if he was a chef though?

  • I wonder if Waits likes Kubrick? It seems appropriate. Both Genius.

  • Luce is the protagonist's name

  • I left my cat on the porch, porch

  • I left my arm in my coat.

  • NOW I'M HOME. AND I'M BLIND. AND I'M BROKE

    WHAT. IS. NEXT.

  • @blomi69 Mr. Waits has outdone himself! I have no idea hoe that was at all possible, but I think it is because they used the Vietnam footage in this video... I was in NAMibia with the SADF and I wish he could've been there to listen too... But seriously - 4 dislikes??? WTF?

  • Gimme another body bag, the body bags full

  • I can't stop listening to this... every day, at least twice. This has to be the most biting, angry, emotionally accurate depiction of the horrendous effects of war on a person's mind we have seen in a song for a long time.

  • mi liki lång tajm! ;-)

  • I know its a long shot but just ...IF.... Chuck norris had Nightmares surely tom waits would play the soundtrack to them.

  • Thanks Momirski for posting and thanks TChandler999 and Organicaog for the backstory info.

  • Song is about ex Iraq marine, Jeff Lucey his grave has a tombstone bearing an epitaph from the Shinedown song he listened to again and again: ''What ever happened to the young man's heart/ Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart.

  • This song is about a U.S. soldier named Jeff Luce who came back from his tour with PTSD. You can find various articles about it on the ol' interweb. Knowing the man's story, and seeing how Tom turned it into this song with Keith Richards and Flea's help, just makes this an even more massive triumph for Tom. This might just be his greatest song ever.

  • Bravo, Momirski. I am glad that your work still stands:)

  • Luce is short for Lucifer (the devil) hence the connect to Hell

  • @gerryfly1 Naw, the song is about Jeff Lucey, who committed suicide after the things he saw during the war in Iraq.

  • @ThePotatoInfestation Thanks I stand corrected

  • Согласен с Вами, это самое лучшее!!!

  • this video and song are great

  • To answer the title question, I got this from an article in The New Yorker.

“Bad as Me” is a jubilant scrabble, and this is nowhere more evident than on “Hell Broke Luce,” the title of which Waits took from graffiti that he read had been scrawled on the walls of Alcatraz.

  • The title is a play on words. Instead of Hell broke Loose, like chaos hit. Hell broke Luce, as in the battlefield left the soldier broken. Hell broke them. That's what I think at least.

  • young steven poplawski was sitting at home when he heard tom waits for the first time. when hearing his voice, steven was moved deeply. he had a moment of pure epiphany after hearing tom's voice and created the first prototype for the blender.

  • Anyone get the spelling "Luce"? Not sure what it's supposed to mean.

  • @Nature89 apart from being short for Lucy (or Lucie) I can't see much of a link. :)

  • @Nature89 I am pretty sure Luce is italian for light (or maybe the word light in a latin declension), but its also a given name and a surname, which is probably how waits uses it in the title

  • @Nature89 'Luce' is another name for a full-grown Pike fish and the word 'Pike' refers to a long spear formerly used by infantry, (now superseded by the bayonet), so the title may be obliquely referring to military weaponry, which is in keeping with the thematic subject matter of the song.

  • @marcgibsontube look up the name Jeff Lucey... that is where "Luce" comes from

  • @blomi69

    and Hoist That Rag

  • This brilliant Tom Waits song just got better after seeing your video. Great job!

  • Keith Richards on geetar and Flea on the fish? Fuckin' epic.

    This song has fantastic lyrics.

  • @FastANDBulbous117

Yeah, it wouldn't be possible to make anything other than a great song with these three.

My lyrical interpretation is that's it's supposed to be some kind of "Ms. Mary Mack" clapping game for combat soldiers.

  • fantastic video! (and song!!)x

  • @blomi69 Certainly one of the best, but I love "Back In The Crowd" and "Raised Right Men" just as much as this one :)

  • Has Tom Waits got a potty mouth on this song? I've never heard him swear apart from the occasional "Damn". Excellent song though.

  • seriously, this is the film i thought of when i first heard this song. brilliant video!

  • It was my birthday a couple of days ago. my girlfriend got me the Bad as me album for it. I can't tell you how happy I am. It's the special edition one, that's in a hard back book with all the lyrics and track information. Also some really cool photographs. At the moment, this is probably easily my favourite track on the album. The dirtiest and heaviest. But the whole album is a brilliant mix of his heavy stuff and his slower songs. It has been on almost constantly since I got it.

  • @ToliveAnimations I got the same special addition cd for xmas. Its fucking brilliant. Love the photography.

  • Simply brilliant.

  • How many different ways can you polish up a turd?

  • Tom never ceases to amaze me, this album is just plain awesome

  • agreed on gods away on business. But.. this whole album is full of win...

  • @blomi69 My thoughts exactly.

  • Tom is on point! Wowee!

  • Pretty amazing that you got this video out this quickly. Very well done. I probably would have gotten around to making something like this but now there's no need.

  • Sorry, don't see what Vietnam has to do with Iraq. Different experiences.

  • @IndianaSmallmouth war is war

  • @xfarrellx Once again...exactly what I was going to say.

  • @IndianaSmallmouth For me there is no big difference between Iraq and Vietnam. War is pretty much fucked up. No matter where or when. So I think the video still fits very good.

  • @IndianaSmallmouth both wars were based on lies

nixon and kissinger and then bush and his crew of savages

    innocent died

not like world war II our fathers fought in

  • @mikefiftynine

people's fathers fought in every one of those wars, illiterate.

  • @ultraviolet99 really? no shit

except ww II was honorable but vietnam and iraq were not

  • awesome song!!! bought the album and love every track on it.

thanks for posting this video. suits the song.

  • love the new album so much. this song is amazing but it needs a raekwon verse

  • Good f@#$king job!!!! this fits perfectly!! Tom Waits will be proud, haha.

  • Good f@#$king job!!!! this fits perfectly!!

  • Thanks for posting. I'm itching to download the new album after previewing it online!

  • Sweet video! Fits perfectly.
