While listening to this song you can taste the desert sand in your teeth, the sweat, blood and fracas. Tom Waits depicts the scene perfectly in a way that only he can.
This is the most Rockin' Fucking Rollin' War song ever... Fuck yeah!! "That Big Fucking Bomb Made Me Death!! ...How Many Ways Can You Polish Off A Turd??!!" War Ain't Pretty.
jim cherewick loves tom waits. don't believe me? 'little weasel house show' on my youtube page i do earth died screaming at 3 : 50. buy bad as me. damned gooood.
Although the original soundtrack to FMJ still fits it best for me, simply because it's so unfitting. The Surfing Bird sequence, for example, could not have been as legendary if it were another song.
This strikes me as the flipside to Massive Attack's "Flat of the Blade". That song's very subtle and electronic and emphasises loneliness and melancholy, whereas this is ugly, organic and angry as hell. Astounding.
GET ME 'NOTHER BODY BAG, THE BODY BAG'S FULL AND, MY FACE WAS SCORCHED-SCORCHED.. I MISS MY HOME I MISS MY PORCH-PORCH.. CAN I GO HOME IN MARCH?! MARCH!!!!
Yeah, folks, that track is fn brilliant...the man's a genius.... !! I have nothing but awe and respect for him and his work......and to think his first album was in 1973 right?...He's still going and seriously kicking ass !..... there aren't too many like Mr Waits around
@blomi69 Mr. Waits has outdone himself! I have no idea hoe that was at all possible, but I think it is because they used the Vietnam footage in this video... I was in NAMibia with the SADF and I wish he could've been there to listen too... But seriously - 4 dislikes??? WTF?
@blomi69 Mr. Waits has outdone himself! I have no idea hoe that was at all possible, but I think it is because they used the Vietnam footage in this video... I was in NAMibia with the SADF and I wish he could've been there to listen too... But seriously - 4 dislikes??? WTF?
I can't stop listening to this... every day, at least twice. This has to be the most biting, angry, emotionally accurate depiction of the horrendous effects of war on a person's mind we have seen in a song for a long time.
Song is about ex Iraq marine, Jeff Lucey his grave has a tombstone bearing an epitaph from the Shinedown song he listened to again and again: ''What ever happened to the young man's heart/ Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart.
This song is about a U.S. soldier named Jeff Luce who came back from his tour with PTSD. You can find various articles about it on the ol' interweb. Knowing the man's story, and seeing how Tom turned it into this song with Keith Richards and Flea's help, just makes this an even more massive triumph for Tom. This might just be his greatest song ever.
To answer the title question, I got this from an article in The New Yorker.
“Bad as Me” is a jubilant scrabble, and this is nowhere more evident than on “Hell Broke Luce,” the title of which Waits took from graffiti that he read had been scrawled on the walls of Alcatraz.
The title is a play on words. Instead of Hell broke Loose, like chaos hit. Hell broke Luce, as in the battlefield left the soldier broken. Hell broke them. That's what I think at least.
young steven poplawski was sitting at home when he heard tom waits for the first time. when hearing his voice, steven was moved deeply. he had a moment of pure epiphany after hearing tom's voice and created the first prototype for the blender.
@Nature89 I am pretty sure Luce is italian for light (or maybe the word light in a latin declension), but its also a given name and a surname, which is probably how waits uses it in the title
@Nature89 'Luce' is another name for a full-grown Pike fish and the word 'Pike' refers to a long spear formerly used by infantry, (now superseded by the bayonet), so the title may be obliquely referring to military weaponry, which is in keeping with the thematic subject matter of the song.
It was my birthday a couple of days ago. my girlfriend got me the Bad as me album for it. I can't tell you how happy I am. It's the special edition one, that's in a hard back book with all the lyrics and track information. Also some really cool photographs. At the moment, this is probably easily my favourite track on the album. The dirtiest and heaviest. But the whole album is a brilliant mix of his heavy stuff and his slower songs. It has been on almost constantly since I got it.
Pretty amazing that you got this video out this quickly. Very well done. I probably would have gotten around to making something like this but now there's no need.
@IndianaSmallmouth For me there is no big difference between Iraq and Vietnam. War is pretty much fucked up. No matter where or when. So I think the video still fits very good.
After the Koran burnings, It's (fixin') getting ready to break luce........Mark my words.

Tom is the only artist I would break the law for to get his music.
And go to jail too if necessary. As long as there was fish on the

Yeah, it wouldn't be possible to make anything other than a great song with these three.
