I think she's an excellent pianist. She lives the music she plays but she shows it off a little bit too much for me. Theatrical, the brilliant lady. I better like listen at her and not to look. So, sometimes I do; she is really beautiful too.
She is as good as it gets and beautiful to boot.. There seems no major piano compositions she has not mastered and in all the videos i have seen of her only once did she have a piece of sheet music in front of her.. she is as gifted as they come
She's a great pianist. Very different, she takes chances in her interpretations, which makes her a lot like Glenn Gould. She's like a Glen Gould with rubato and soft pedal.
Her playing is nice, but this clip is a bit overproduced. It evidently targets an audience that values her beautiful face and histrionics as much as good piano-playing.

Bach was great but Vivaldi was better. And the thing that came to my mind...the greatest punishment for germans for everything they've ever done is the horrible look of german women.
many of you must have very very big problems. how do you dare calling this video/playing/person kitchy?!? and what's your problems dealing with women? she's a woman and she plays the piano very well. more than this. but this isn't discussed here. everbody who says she doesn't belong behind a piano, is just stupid and doesn't have any sense for music or equality. 21st century.
You must be the most precious and rare person in 21th century because people like you who possess chauvinism and patriarchy are probably extinguished. People like you who have no idea about how to appreciate every one's talent equally and without sexism are really "special." Man, step into modern society, okay!
Helene, the honesty, courage and amount of holy ambition(we have not traded off for something self indulgent)with which one approaches the best of Bach, considering that he/she who has the best concept of his most profound works, which, for me is BWV1052, 3rd movement, like the musical alphabet, is among the most fortunate for endless learning, and has a template for how we should seek our Maker, with all our heart, in His Holy Word for our complete being's endless growth. God bless!
I have to say that I find some of the comments here to be bizarre, to say the least. If it bothers you that the pianist is attractive, close your eyes. As far as whether Bach would approve...Well it's a Busoni transcription. In effect, it's a romantic piano piece.
Finally - a tasteful and intelligent video clip of a superb piano performance on YouTube. Most of the others look like the neighbor's home movies - at last we are seeing some creative visual transcendence. Thanks for posting!
Any transcription must of necessity change the listening experience. There is a famous guitar version, (John Williams amongst many), that in theory might be closer to the violin original, but what surely matters is that the genius of the composer can 'withstand' any serious re-interpretation? Hélène is, imho, doing way more than re-interpreting: her artistry touches this listener's soul.
Some have pointed it is to 'romantic' for Bach. But why not experimenting new sounds? I find this interpretation really challenging. If I had not seen the title I wouldn't have said it's Bach; definitely! But it's interesting to hear Bach in a total different 'colour' palette.
@clitomaniac It is a little cloying, a little OTT. As we British might say 'this isn't just any Bach Chaconne, this is an M&S Bach Chaconne'. It's piano porn, essentially, and certain parts of me respond very favourably to it. It perhaps wouldn't find so much favour from Bach himself though as it's far from a respectful interpretation of what is quite a divine piece of music.

It is impossible to describe anything by Bach as 'kitsch' with a straight face I would have thought.
I suggest that the soft, feminine, pretty face of the player might have lent the notion credence in the mind of someone perhaps unaware of their innate prejudices in that direction.
Personally, I've no difficulty in separating out the sound of the player herself from the penchant for soft focus of the director of the video.
@pila406 well, who really knows how Bach might have wanted us play anything he worte some 250 years later on modern instruments that he certainly didn't have and didn't write musics for.
I agree. I saw Bach in concert in Wurzburg, just before the September Muesli riots. he couldn't keep a straight face on on those difficult parts. We used to have a running joke. He'd say... "my PRIVATE parts..." and then put a straight face on, step up onto the stage and sit at the pianoforte... all poise.
I quite agree with those who say Bach wasn't Baroque, he was a style himself. Bach was more than a composer. Also very versatile. Just take for example this piece. If I'd heard it without knowing who'd composed it, I'd bet it'd been Rachmaninoff. That's why people say Bach is the great music teacher.
I'm sure you're right, but to a novice ear (mine), it makes it very accessible. Probably it's like taste for wine that gets dryer as you develop a palate, etc. But this video is grace for us who are still drinking Bacardi.
@pila406 Well this isn't bach - Bach wrote it for Solo Violin and it was transcriped in the early 1890's for piano by Busoni - who was decidedly romantic - so it is interly appropriate - fantastic playing really.
@dombadil Had no complaints for the composer of course [which I adore] only for miss Helene. You should listen to other interpretations also like Gould's /Richter's/Perahia's/Argerich's.
I have small hands and always took that as my biggest handicap. Devoted a lot of time learning about physics of the hand, but nowhere found out that small hands are more volatile and have great reflexes. I do not question your statement, just tell me the source of this information. I am piano teacher and I devote a lot of my time relaxing student and the hand to come to its most natural and functional state. To relay on your information would be a great psychological contribution. Thanks.
All you got to do is watch some of our asian pianists for almost all have small hands, and "the proof is in the pudding".An often said saying is "Clumsy big hands and clumsy big feet" although there are plenty of exceptions!.
Helen has small hands and this is proof enough! so dont look this as an disadvantage to have small hands but to cordinate your playing well with a good finger memory and you will be astonished at the results. Y.
i didnt insult her, its just a fact that she has small hands! and this piece is extremly difficult if you have small hands..but she plays it perfectly well!
It's funny. When I hear this wonderful romantic interpretation of the Chaconne by Busoni (Bach is over all types of interpretations), I think that Keith Jarret have been deeply impressed by it (:-).
And whenever. Thank you Hélène for this grateful gift.
@ethositachi , I have often thought that. I think Father Johann would have organized an army to go around destroying every harpsichord they could find! LOL
Neruphis, it's the Chaconne (5th movement) of the Partita no. 2 in D minor. It was written by Bach for the violin, but what we're listening to here by Helene Grimaud was arranged by Busoni for piano. Beautiful, isn't it.
This is absolutely superb, what a marvellous rendition. Is Helene Grimaud a world class pianist, can anyone tell me. How does she rank with the world's best?
Beinahe ueberirdisch.
I think she's an excellent pianist. She lives the music she plays but she shows it off a little bit too much for me. Theatrical, the brilliant lady. I better like listen at her and not to look. So, sometimes I do; she is really beautiful too.

TuttiNounours 1 year ago

She builds beautiful crescendo from 1:44. [Not very baroque like - more romantic - but still amazing]
She plays beautiful but this is not Bach.
pila406 1 year ago
@pila406 well, who really knows how Bach might have wanted us play anything he worte some 250 years later on modern instruments that he certainly didn't have and didn't write musics for.

I appreciate the look on her face while playing the most difficult parts - it never changes..
onkeljessen 1 year ago
@onkeljessen
I agree. I saw Bach in concert in Wurzburg, just before the September Muesli riots. he couldn't keep a straight face on on those difficult parts. We used to have a running joke. He'd say... "my PRIVATE parts..." and then put a straight face on, step up onto the stage and sit at the pianoforte... all poise.
I LOVED Bach. He was so witty, so warm.

The cinematography certainly doesn't help.
1worldcurrency 1 year ago
@pila406 Well this isn't bach - Bach wrote it for Solo Violin and it was transcriped in the early 1890's for piano by Busoni - who was decidedly romantic - so it is interly appropriate - fantastic playing really.

it is a wonder it exists
and the miss is playing it wonderfully

@dombadil Had no complaints for the composer of course [which I adore] only for miss Helene. You should listen to other interpretations also like Gould's /Richter's/Perahia's/Argerich's.

Did you know that small hands are more volatile and have great reflexes . When you have a mental capasity as Helen its just marvelous!!
yolanda776 2 years ago
I have small hands and always took that as my biggest handicap. Devoted a lot of time learning about physics of the hand, but nowhere found out that small hands are more volatile and have great reflexes. I do not question your statement, just tell me the source of this information. I am piano teacher and I devote a lot of my time relaxing student and the hand to come to its most natural and functional state. To relay on your information would be a great psychological contribution. Thanks.
amilahad 1 year ago 3
All you got to do is watch some of our asian pianists for almost all have small hands, and "the proof is in the pudding".An often said saying is "Clumsy big hands and clumsy big feet" although there are plenty of exceptions!.
Helen has small hands and this is proof enough! so dont look this as an disadvantage to have small hands but to cordinate your playing well with a good finger memory and you will be astonished at the results. Y.

Hélène Grimaud is a gifted pianist.
Extraordinarily charismatic.
She is able to transmit a lot of sensitivity.
and is a beautiful woman.
It makes us feel the music.
Even those most skeptical.

It's funny. When I hear this wonderful romantic interpretation of the Chaconne by Busoni (Bach is over all types of interpretations), I think that Keith Jarret have been deeply impressed by it (:-).
And whenever. Thank you Hélène for this grateful gift.

massimoedu 2 years ago

Hey does anyone know what piece this is?
Neruphis 2 years ago
Neruphis, it's the Chaconne (5th movement) of the Partita no. 2 in D minor. It was written by Bach for the violin, but what we're listening to here by Helene Grimaud was arranged by Busoni for piano. Beautiful, isn't it.

abelprinceabel 2 years ago

I just hate the fact that people clasify profond music in "sad" and "romantic". that´s a very poor idea of being profond, isn´t it?
javierleonenriquez 2 years ago 2
@javierleonenriquez - Humm...one can be romantic or sad and still be superficial...a deep feeling can express sorrow as well as joy.
Omop this rendition is neither romantic nor sad:
its greatness drives me beyond both of these human behaviours.....but that's so personal a fact ,so far away from any possible statement.
Let me add that Its deep emotional impact is
undeniably stressed by skilled staging and camera job.
Greetings.
