  • I think she's an excellent pianist. She lives the music she plays but she shows it off a little bit too much for me. Theatrical, the brilliant lady. I better like listen at her and not to look. So, sometimes I do; she is really beautiful too.

  • She is an excellent pianist beyond a doubt. If she is also beautiful as a woman, so much the better.

  • She is as good as it gets and beautiful to boot.. There seems no major piano compositions she has not mastered and in all the videos i have seen of her only once did she have a piece of sheet music in front of her.. she is as gifted as they come

  • She's a great pianist. Very different, she takes chances in her interpretations, which makes her a lot like Glenn Gould. She's like a Glen Gould with rubato and soft pedal.

  • @ycooreman I should mention that Bach is not her thing though. So in that way she's not like Gould at all.

  • there is an article about her in this week's The New Yorker magazine, Nov 7th, '11.

  • Her playing is nice, but this clip is a bit overproduced. It evidently targets an audience that values her beautiful face and histrionics as much as good piano-playing.

  • @titusbeertsen what it means clip?

  • Fantastic !

  • I love this. Now come, hate me.

  • znakomite

  • i think that yes ...she has something new as a pianist and a musician to bring to the audience ...i ve never heard something like that she s amazing :-)

  • many of you must have very very big problems. how do you dare calling this video/playing/person kitchy?!? and what's your problems dealing with women? she's a woman and she plays the piano very well. more than this. but this isn't discussed here. everbody who says she doesn't belong behind a piano, is just stupid and doesn't have any sense for music or equality. 21st century.

  • ¿ cleverfeller!! Could you write that down in just plain understandable English for the average man?

Waar heb je het eigenlijk over?

    was sag´s du?

    que passa!?

By the way, I am A Bach fan, so, this piece, I am NOT impressed with some fantasy missing out at all points what it Might have to be meant!

Get back to school. school boy!

  • You must be the most precious and rare person in 21th century because people like you who possess chauvinism and patriarchy are probably extinguished. People like you who have no idea about how to appreciate every one's talent equally and without sexism are really "special." Man, step into modern society, okay!

  • who dared call that POS a piece of Bach ? that's just some romantic Busoni shit, eww.

  • underrated...

  • tubatenorsax

Helene, the honesty, courage and amount of holy ambition(we have not traded off for something self indulgent)with which one approaches the best of Bach, considering that he/she who has the best concept of his most profound works, which, for me is BWV1052, 3rd movement, like the musical alphabet, is among the most fortunate for endless learning, and has a template for how we should seek our Maker, with all our heart, in His Holy Word for our complete being's endless growth. God bless!

  • I have to say that I find some of the comments here to be bizarre, to say the least. If it bothers you that the pianist is attractive, close your eyes. As far as whether Bach would approve...Well it's a Busoni transcription. In effect, it's a romantic piano piece.

  • Finally - a tasteful and intelligent video clip of a superb piano performance on YouTube. Most of the others look like the neighbor's home movies - at last we are seeing some creative visual transcendence. Thanks for posting!

  • She's so hardcore that she makes Bach sounds like homophonic music.

Seriously, stick to the romantic repertoire Hélène.

    Or shoot a sextape.

  • she's great and she's a fox, but she's no yuja wang.

  • @utubuser10 Affortunatly!!!

  • L' emotion...l'emotion....

  • she could play "the thre blind mice" and leave me breathless.

  • edel und formvollendet...

  • Any transcription must of necessity change the listening experience. There is a famous guitar version, (John Williams amongst many), that in theory might be closer to the violin original, but what surely matters is that the genius of the composer can 'withstand' any serious re-interpretation? Hélène is, imho, doing way more than re-interpreting: her artistry touches this listener's soul.

  • Bravo! Helene is an incredibly beautiful woman - her beauty truly comes out in her music... just WOW

  • Some have pointed it is to 'romantic' for Bach. But why not experimenting new sounds? I find this interpretation really challenging. If I had not seen the title I wouldn't have said it's Bach; definitely! But it's interesting to hear Bach in a total different 'colour' palette.

    !

  • @clitomaniac It is a little cloying, a little OTT. As we British might say 'this isn't just any Bach Chaconne, this is an M&S Bach Chaconne'. It's piano porn, essentially, and certain parts of me respond very favourably to it. It perhaps wouldn't find so much favour from Bach himself though as it's far from a respectful interpretation of what is quite a divine piece of music.

  • un peu jeune et sans âme.

  • J'adore Hélène Grimaud...

  • fantastic...so subtle impressionistic touch turnovers into "eruption" of drama

  • I hate Bach on the piano. Get a harpsichord!

  • So Romantic, not so Bach... but so Grimaud!

  • sexy music..

  • I am in love. I am working on the same. You do it so well. Help me with the fingering,,,you are fantastic.

  • Me don't like, yuk

It looks interesting with the sound off though

  • disgusting

  • Great performance, the "A" like in the bwv565-Toccata:)

  • Bravo!!!

  • Genius!!! She is Goddess voice, speaking through playing ... INCREDIBLE!

  • BRAVA!

    e bellissima!

  • Wow, so beautiful..Brava!!!

  • A totally new Bach sound. Very unique. Thanks

  • Hat jemand die Noten zu diesem Stück?

Wenn ja bitte an kh14@gmx.at senden! DANKE!! =)

  • Chaconne D minor, aus der Partita No.2 für Violine BWV 1004/ Busoni Bearbeitung

  • Welches Stück ist das? Nummer...?

    What piece is that? Number...?

  • Welches Stück ist das? Nummer, Bezeichnung...?

    What piece is that? Number...?

  • Does reality exist as given? Is this the real world we live in? Is there any true beauty in it anymore? Does God ,infinty and true purity manifest everywhere and at this moment ?.....Is humanity greater than we ever imagined? All answers lie on this screen ,appear before your eyes , dance in your ears.......Peace and love to you all!

  • too romantic in my opinion...

  • @dainerflute i totally agree. bach ain't french.

  • i kinda have the impression that she is blind, by the way she doesnt look at the piano some off the time and she just kinda stares off into nothing. so is she blind?

  • @cantthinkofusname No, she's not.

  • I agree that she has a Romantic approach but this Bach- Busoni is of that era....and so I think her style works. And, I really enjoy her musicality. The camera work was incredible great shots of some of the keyboard work, which I really enjoyed. Schiff and Gould are my interpretors of Bach but this piece lends itself to a variety of artisits. Yvgenny Kissen does this one well in my opinion.

  • Kitsch & GRAUENHAFT

  • @modellist7 Wer mag wohl da was verstehen...

  • It is impossible to describe anything by Bach as 'kitsch' with a straight face I would have thought.

I suggest that the soft, feminine, pretty face of the player might have lent the notion credence in the mind of someone perhaps unaware of their innate prejudices in that direction.

Personally, I've no difficulty in separating out the sound of the player herself from the penchant for soft focus of the director of the video.

  • @cleverfeller well said..

  • @cleverfeller How do you make a video interesting? Well, you don't seem to know.

  • Meravigliosa!

  • The best interpretation of Bach's Chaconne ever done after George Enescu!!!!!

Helene Grimaud is one of the rare musicians who have understood that Bach was one of the most romantic composers.

  • @TheFeldenkraisMethod You may want to listen to Julian Bream interpret the Chaconne on the guitar ... you may reconsider ...

  • Thank you for posting...

  • She builds beautiful crescendo from 1:44. [Not very baroque like - more romantic - but still amazing]

She plays beautiful but this is not Bach.

  • @pila406 well, who really knows how Bach might have wanted us play anything he worte some 250 years later on modern instruments that he certainly didn't have and didn't write musics for.

  • I appreciate the look on her face while playing the most difficult parts - it never changes..

  • @onkeljessen

I agree. I saw Bach in concert in Wurzburg, just before the September Muesli riots. he couldn't keep a straight face on on those difficult parts. We used to have a running joke. He'd say... "my PRIVATE parts..." and then put a straight face on, step up onto the stage and sit at the pianoforte... all poise.

I LOVED Bach. He was so witty, so warm.

  • Beautiful...

  • the absolute masterpiece

  • Speachless. Bach is the God of music.

  • I quite agree with those who say Bach wasn't Baroque, he was a style himself. Bach was more than a composer. Also very versatile. Just take for example this piece. If I'd heard it without knowing who'd composed it, I'd bet it'd been Rachmaninoff. That's why people say Bach is the great music teacher.

  • Viewers should realize that this is only the last 3 and a half pages out of 19 pages.

  • Oh, if only I could be her piano....

  • She looks happy and her interpretation is really awesome. Love it !

  • la musique adoucit les moeurs dit on....

  • well done i love it sooooooooooooo much realy you are great pianest i'v heard

  • I would say a bit to kitschy in my opinion.

  • I'm sure you're right, but to a novice ear (mine), it makes it very accessible. Probably it's like taste for wine that gets dryer as you develop a palate, etc. But this video is grace for us who are still drinking Bacardi.

  • @pila406

    The cinematography certainly doesn't help.

  • @pila406 Well this isn't bach - Bach wrote it for Solo Violin and it was transcriped in the early 1890's for piano by Busoni - who was decidedly romantic - so it is interly appropriate - fantastic playing really.

  • @pila406

write such a music first before having so harsh judgment

it is a wonder it exists

and the miss is playing it wonderfully

  • @dombadil Had no complaints for the composer of course [which I adore] only for miss Helene. You should listen to other interpretations also like Gould's /Richter's/Perahia's/Argerich's.

  • @pila406

I never compare with other players while hearing a piece, because it closes my ears ;)

  • she has small hands!

  • @hotbebimauz

Did you know that small hands are more volatile and have great reflexes . When you have a mental capasity as Helen its just marvelous!!

  • I have small hands and always took that as my biggest handicap. Devoted a lot of time learning about physics of the hand, but nowhere found out that small hands are more volatile and have great reflexes. I do not question your statement, just tell me the source of this information. I am piano teacher and I devote a lot of my time relaxing student and the hand to come to its most natural and functional state. To relay on your information would be a great psychological contribution. Thanks.

  • All you got to do is watch some of our asian pianists for almost all have small hands, and "the proof is in the pudding".An often said saying is "Clumsy big hands and clumsy big feet" although there are plenty of exceptions!.

Helen has small hands and this is proof enough! so dont look this as an disadvantage to have small hands but to cordinate your playing well with a good finger memory and you will be astonished at the results. Y.

  • What is "mental capasity"?

  • why do you insult someone you don't even know?

  • i didnt insult her, its just a fact that she has small hands! and this piece is extremly difficult if you have small hands..but she plays it perfectly well!

  • Hélène Grimaud is a gifted pianist.

    Extraordinarily charismatic.

She is able to transmit a lot of sensitivity.

    and is a beautiful woman.

It makes us feel the music.

    Even those most skeptical.

  • WOW :)

*AUCH WILL*

  • It's funny. When I hear this wonderful romantic interpretation of the Chaconne by Busoni (Bach is over all types of interpretations), I think that Keith Jarret have been deeply impressed by it (:-).

And whenever. Thank you Hélène for this grateful gift.

    Max

  • What is she playing?

  • @debruintje Chaconne in D minor (Bach/Busoni) :-)

  • Comment removed

  • I have never deeply heard Bach before untill now, beautiful!.

  • She has a very romantic sound in bach, but in my opinion it works well, beautiful!

  • Imagine if Bach had access to a modern grand piano.

  • @ethositachi , I have often thought that. I think Father Johann would have organized an army to go around destroying every harpsichord they could find! LOL

  • This is Bach/BUSONI.

  • @TheByllero yes. and too much sustain pedal, absolutely

  • @TheByllero That is very true, could have been from Chopin.

  • @TheByllero This is not Bach !!!

    It's Bach-Busoni

    :-)

  • @TheByllero

This is a transcription of Bach by the Romantic composer Busoni so a romantic sound is quite in keeping.

  • Comment removed

  • Romantiquement romantique....romantique a souhait...Sublime!!!

    Bravo Madame

  • One of the better/best interpretations. Thank you so much for your years of study. Almost as bonny as yourself!

  • Emotiva, molt emotiva la interpretació.

  • absolument magnifique.

  • Comment removed

  • god i love this piece, in all its transcriptions

  • Hey does anyone know what piece this is?

  • Neruphis, it's the Chaconne (5th movement) of the Partita no. 2 in D minor. It was written by Bach for the violin, but what we're listening to here by Helene Grimaud was arranged by Busoni for piano. Beautiful, isn't it.

  • This is absolutely superb, what a marvellous rendition. Is Helene Grimaud a world class pianist, can anyone tell me. How does she rank with the world's best?

  • ...still playing today?

Ummm, probably 2nd tier, with very few in 1st tier, 10s in 2nd, and hundreds in the 3rd, etc...

  • Yes, she is. She is considered one of the best interpreters of Bach alive today.

  • Oh thanks for telling me this. I really didn't know. I just thought she was brilliant.

Beinahe ueberirdisch.

  • Very nice!

  • This woman is very close to a superhuman: Intelligent, organized, disciplined, purposeful, gifted and beautiful!

  • Damn , so sexy....

  • I just hate the fact that people clasify profond music in "sad" and "romantic". that´s a very poor idea of being profond, isn´t it?

  • @javierleonenriquez - Humm...one can be romantic or sad and still be superficial...a deep feeling can express sorrow as well as joy.

Omop this rendition is neither romantic nor sad:

its greatness drives me beyond both of these human behaviours.....but that's so personal a fact ,so far away from any possible statement.

Let me add that Its deep emotional impact is

undeniably stressed by skilled staging and camera job.

    Greetings.

  • Totally agree with you
