I just stumbled upon this song, and I'm glad I did! Those vocal runs that Moishe does are incredible. I can't imagine how long he must've practiced those!
wow,, very impressive. its toooo very bad that music now has evolved to the point to where the artistic qualities are not emphisised as it is with music and folk songs such as this.
Halevay Halevay. It is late already.Mama went to Persesip to by Bear saussage.
Will you star to install New Year Tree already.
We shold go to grandma house soon.Remember ther Rebe whoes wife is Russian will be there. I hope my personal face won't blushing. If people ask you to perform, please do it with all you soul, espesialy when you perform Yoshke furt aveg.
My brother's in low partner will be there. His daughter's birthday soon so behave yoursself.A if your grand pa could see which you are now
efpaski...you might contact Cantor Michael Smolash. I saw him, Cantor Rachael Kalmowitz and one other cantor perform this last night at a Cantors Concert in Michigan. Wonderful performance.
I want to sing this song at my childrens' weddings, God willing. Where do I get the lyrics, the sheet music, anything? I checked with the big Yiddish repositories: Brown University, University of Pennsylvania, YIVO. And came up empty handed. Help! I love this song.
fantastic!! gorgeous he signs in maqams while the sisters respond in temperament fantastic mixture of maqams and perfect temparament with so much humour!!
No Maqams, this is European style Jewish music. there is no maqam here sorry. Its Modified Phyrgian /Freygish common in East European Music, its equal temperament
I discovered these ladies only this year! What talent they had! It is especially interesting to hear them sing standards and feel the jewish chanting intonations added to them.
He was great and I used to listen to him on the American Jewish Caravan of Stars on Sunday morning over radio station WMGM 1050AM in New York. My parents had Moishe Oysher and the Barry Sisters records and now they are in my collection. While Jewish music has become less Yiddish and more Hebrew, with such stars as Mordechai Ben David and Avraham Fried, listening to this recording brings back many happy memories. Thank you for sharing this recording.
Thank you for this fantastic post! Maybe a new generation will come to know Moishe Oysher and the Barry Sisters. Thanks and keep on posting (I subscribe to you!)

efpasik, I saw a wonderful performance of Halevay last night by Cantors Michael Smolash, Rachael Kalmowitz, and Darcie Sharlein.
YouTube won't let me include the link to Michael Smolash's website, but he has one. If you google him you can find it. He might be able to help you.

What does halevai mean?
mierpaul 3 years ago
It is the yiddish saying for "G-d willing" similar to the spanish "ojaLa" or to the arabic "inch Allah".
