This makes me homesick. I used to use this route as a shortcut from El Sobrante to get to hair appointments in Berkeley when 80 was messy. The view opens up magnificently as the hills slide behind you & the bay shimmers before a city dwarfed next to Mount Tam. & with gravity pulling you down the hill, the feeling was always exhilarating. Thanks for posting this.
The east side of the old tunnel is gated and belongs to the East Bay Regional Park district. The tunnel is behind that gate and sharply to the LEFT. There is a house on the site for park rangers and workers. Their whole area was at one time a turn around spot. You can see various other small roads near the old tunnel and these were old wagon and cattle trails that are no longer in use. The tunnel is a ONE WAY tunnel and cars lined up on each side waiting for their turn moving in a caravan.
SO I found that second spot, but I dont see how there was a tunnel there... no remains at all, just dense forest! Also, can people not go up on the other side? it said service vehicles only, but not "no pedestrians"!
The Caldecott Tunnel flows from Oakland/Berkeley California through into Orinda California in Contra Costa County. This is a fun day out if you are looking for a road adventure in the San Francisco Bay Area. Take HWY 80 over the Bay Bridge to HWY 580/24 toward Walnut Creek to go through the tunnel. Take the first exit after exiting the tunnel to explore Tunnel Rd to the old tunnel.
One thing I want to know is that is the tunnel itself still there or has it been filled in?

@TomHessta The old Kennedy Toll Road Tunnel? That's what I want to know. I've driven through the Caldecott multiple times.

@mikokat Oh oh sorry, I didn't realize that's what you were referring to.
