oh yay minimal ventilation and only one box ): your terrible...and just because its 55 gallons doesnt meen there is a ton on ventilation.. a wire cage is much better. there are spaces for air to travel in and out..its open...unlike ur cage. your rats need some toys aswell...and more than ONE hide place..evil
@RichieSam5 That was nowhere near violent. Sheesh. But yeah, aquariums are a bad idea because of the ammonia from urine. The cage looks really clean though, that's a good thing. I'm a free-ranger myself :)
@cordmircydinkens yeah I've just found that out myself. Had rats for a couple of months now and my last purchase of pine bedding was dusty as hell, far dustier than it used to be. I sent the store an email to complain about the drop in quality as I've been buying their pine for my mice for ages. I linked them details of why pine is bad and suggested they sell something like ecobed instead which is what I've moved onto. Hopefully they'll change their product range.
it doesn't matter if there's ventilation or not -- aromatic wood shavings can kill rats and rabbits: look up "aromatic wood shavings rat bedding" on Google
@timnahthegreat so if I wanted to put aromatic wood shaving for my rats i couldn't? Is there any woods shavings you can give your rats? I used to give it to my hammies (hamsters)
@jessebear10 If you use aromatic wood shavings, they probably won't live as long. We use CareFresh (pretty expensive) under an old bath towel (cheap) and just wash the towel once a week. We have a few old towels we use interchangeably. The rats love the towels, but they will tear them up and move them around, which is okay with us.
Um its an ok treat every great once in a while, but just so your know cheese is pretty bad for rats, feeding it to them regularly is like having a triple decker whopper every day. But cute rats :)
you do realize that an aquarium is soficiant enough for rats. rats love to climb and a wire cage is nice for that. and the most important thing is you have them in cedar bedding. that can cause organ failure, resbitory disease or problems. i would suggest putting a piece of cloth down and have some type of litte (you can research on pet rescue sites) in a bowl and they'll use it for a liter box like cats do. i'd put a little weight on it or they'll constanly spill it.
i have a rat and i am going to be heart broken when it passes away

That's cute! I hope that's not their cage though lol

You shouldn't have them fight over it like that. It's kindof abusive. Just cut them pieces instead so they don't turn violent.
And you really shouldn't keep so many rats in that small of a cage...

@PostgodAfterbirth I didn't say it was violent, I said it could turn violent. It's just a better idea to cut pieces so they're not fighting over it.
The cage looks clean, it's just boring... i hope they take the rats out often...
i wish i could free-range more, my parents won't allow it ;)

Why are they in such a boring plain cage?
You say you spoil them rotten yet you practically torture them by keeping them in that cage? I really hope you don't keep them in that.

Use hardwood shavings. Any soft wood gives the animals respiratory problems.

@11thhourreprieve Aspen is a nice hardwood that comes in cheap shavings, is safe for rats, and absorbs odor well. :)

An aquarium doesn't give rodents enough ventilation.. aquariums can promote respiratory problems in small animals...
ritzie713 1 year ago
I have them in a 55 gallon aquarium, but there is plenty of ventilation don't worry :)
