The first iPod didn't even come out until late 2001. Times have changed more over the last decade than people realize.

I think " better man " is about a woman with a character flaw, of constantly settling for less in her relationships, for the fear of being alone. Which is something most of us have done, but from the lyrics, nothing about the man is specified or given any real detail, which tells me that she has lied to more than one man and that it might be her character flaw, and not just a rough time in her life.
