Intro starts at 8:56 and sound is not nsync..nevertheless, we can hear him speak which is still better than nothing!
Sir Naipaul is my favorite author bar none. So far I have read his:"An Area of Darkness," "India-A Wounded Civilization" and "Among the Believers." and I have yet to be disappointed. His biting analysis of India is a hard pill to swallow and yet very very necessary.....Love him, admire him and may God Bless him with a long life and a happy companionship with his pakistani wife:)
@isateq ....U should have started with Ali Mazrui's 'The African, a Triple Heritage. Therein u begin to see the divisions of Africa between a few European kingdoms and the Arabs. In the case of Christianity, the English via David Livingstone lucidly elucidate the Empire's intentions: 3C's.....Christianity, civility and commerce. I could add more books to your report that would grow a beauteous report. BTW, this is an impressive excerpt.
It's his wife! And I thought it was hilarious at the beginning of his talk when he said: "Put my mouth closer to it?" Reminded me of his article A Second Visit from The Overcrowded Barracoon...
The first question by the audience seems a stupid one and the second one that would have provoked him to say something angry. I got only 'I can believe in their belief'.
That woman standing to his left during his lecture is really annoying. Keeps fixing his mike and book for no purpose, I'd tell her bug off if I were him
The hosts clearly didn't have the sense to configure the mic as per the requirement and test it beforehand, instead, rudely expecting the esteemed speaker to configure himself. Otherwise too, quite a poor show overall.
Who is this woman sitting next to him and why is she treating him like someone out an institution for mentally retarded, constantly nudging in the way she keeps moving the book or points to the mic? Then, the other one comes along telling him to speak into the mic in a tone, as if scolding a schoolboy for not doing something properly. And, why is he letting them behave that way, he seems normal in his speech or his ability to hold the book on his own.
Remove the 'they' while promoting a book. Or the blight could catch up. It is heartening that he is still wrting so long after declaring a novel dead. May he write another one to enliven a dead form.
I thought that wasn't a book of fiction. They very way it was narrated... pure non-fiction. Perhaps Naipaul has brought the novel to its highest level, and done his dad very proud of course, who believed the novel the highest form (of prose).

It's been a long time since Pat.

It makes you wonder how Naipaul managed a career without her. Lady Naipaul sought out, performed and earned her post. Well done!

Now, I'm sure it is his 2nd wife, Nadira.

That's because he is known to shout at members of the audience if they were to interrupt or laugh when he is speaking.
But that part reminds me of a movie, X-men, where this patient-character seems to be the voicebox of those around him.
The audience seems like a pretty mature one though.
