"the burden of freedom is too weighty - maybe we are in a time where people dont want to hear about freedom." wise words. the picture of nietzsche after that is poetic. thank you for the upload.
freedom...I guess people can have a SENSE of freedom and Sartre's take on this is admirable, but we can't help being reconstructed and influenced by everything that is around us & everything that is presented to us. Sartre presents what he believes yet he is only free in his thoughts and life choices being bound into the time and space he was living in. I don't know if I make sense.but I don't think we can reach absolute freedom. then again, it's relative to the individual
Without order and predictability, you have uncertainty. And as far as I know, the latter has always been negative. Our system gives us a glimpse into tomorrow, and the majority of us like that.
@SaggyBawlz The latter hasn't always been negative. If everyone were to abide by the laws of convention with no desire to challenge tradition, many of our businessmen, musicians, artists, and other innovators would cease to exist.
I don't say that it's dangerous cause it allows any action. I don't care for any action. I would love to have anarchy I think I could make it pretty well under those circumstances lol. I just think that any assumption or believe about the meaning of life leads to dogmatism. And it's just inescapable. So no need to get mad at any system, capitalist, religion, communism, anarchy etc.... Same stuff another angle!
@PeopleOfAr So you wouldn't mind if someone could break into your home, steal your possessions, shoot you, and go unpunished? I agree with Jean Paul Sartre on many things, and agree with the basis of his philosophy, but there should be some form of balance.
I understand what he is saying, but I say it's nothing but the same. It's just another angle to look at life. And if you go with that angle it means you wont go with another. So I think it's all dogmatic and it's hypocritical to say otherwise. I think one time our ancestors decided to live in this way, someday it will be changed but it is nothing different from what he asks. Its just that within absurdity humans create order and predictability as much as its possible. Thats who we are.
As we are born we go about create our own meaning. But I think Sartre isnt happy about our choices. I think he thinks if everyone would go about create there own meaning there would be much more diversity and absurdity and we wouldnt copy each other so much. And I think to assume as such would be flawed for many reasons. I like the evolutionary one. I think its how the human and other animal minds work. We are social animals this is what we do.
The only true meaning that you always will believe in that case is that there is no true meaning. And that is not liberating, in fact that is just the same thing as every other believe about life including religion. I think if you really want freedom you should be so ignorant, unbiased, not to know anything and from there create your own meaning, not influenced by anything. Not even by a believe that there is no one universal meaning. And that to me is exactly what already happens.
@PeopleOfAr I know this is a year old, but I would disagree. I would say it is impossible to not be influenced by anything. Even if you never attended school, never interactedd with people, and refused to read, you would consciously or subconsciously be influenced by your circumstances. I think it's best to learn as much as you can, and read amap, but constantly inquire, criticize, and scrutinize whatever you learn.
Well Im not the one advocating individuality, Sartre is. My point is still logically sound though. I do not advocate creating "own" meanings. But if you are (like Sartre in this video) then surely the best way would be by not being influenced of other ideas. Theoretically this would spur true individuality. Sure in practice it's impossible, but thats my point exactly. Sartre is the one claiming one should do so, neglecting its impracticality and his own influence making him a hypocrite.
Being critical is a nice academic virtue, but I haven't seen much of it in practice. I just think instructing the creation of own meaning undermines the definition of own. How would it be own if one would follow Sartre? Thats all.
I see what your saying. The subjective experience can not be attained if one chooses to follow someone else' formula. But the good thing about Sartre is unlike religion, or societal ethics and norms, he doesn't give a step by step format on how to live. He plants the seed by encouraging psychological independence, and the rest is up to the individual. I agree you don't see criticism in practice nowadays. It is frowned upon and those who have questions for everything are seen as defiant.
true, not only defiant also dangerous. Defiant is but one stigmatization of critics. I think it's troublesome, but maybe not that new or surprising. Don't get me wrong I really like Sartre and I dont want to sound arrogant, but I'm not sure about doctrines. I don't mind religious people as well. I don't think they are very different from others. Everyone has personal myths about the universe and meaning of life. None can be proven definite, but all ought to be respected equally imo.
@PeopleOfAr If they are all to be respected equally, then everyone including the holder of each belief will have to aknowledge that they're arbitrary. There cannot -- logically -- exist multiple, conflicting truths.
thats exactly what I was saying. There is no one objective meaning so we should create our own. But to me its logical that as soon as you believe there is no one objective meaning there is no way to construct your own meaning. You see therefore you will have to always have the idea that there is no objective meaning in the back of your mind, which will inevitably influence your opinion and your meaning making ability.
Soo that's exactly what we do today/everyday. This way we already constructed our own meaning. What more does he want from us ?? I don't understand. He seem to want us to believe there is no meaning, which makes us the same prisoners he wants to free us from lol. Philosophy is confusing I think I don't understand this. To me it all looks hypocritical!
Something doesn't match with this philosophy though. He says life has no meaning and therefore we are free to choose a meaning (construct our own). But to do so one canNOT be convinced that there is no meaning to life, right? How can you make up your own meaning if you believe there is no meaning...? In this case you already have a meaning, the meaning is to construct your own meaning (which you cannot do for the above reason). lol so basically you need NOT to believe that there is no meaning!
