The problem is in poor countries the cost of internet is also high so most people go to LAN's where they share their media. Untill internet cost come down in the third world we will have piracy.

I don't see blizzard ever going f2p and that's why they are bleeding subs they are too greedy. I will still play their buy to play games like diablo 3 but I won't be apart of this next mmo, hell haven't even played wow since cata came out.
@DaFleegsta Yeah, would be genius to put a fast food advertisement picture in place of a loading screen on a game.. lol. Make people hungry so they go out and buy the food LOL
Blizzard has already confirmed Titan will be subscription based. In an interview at Blizzcon 2011, Mike Morhaime said that f2p is not planned in the forseeable future, this remark seems to include Titan. /watch?v=u8WIbe_XSPc&context=C3922c6fADOEgsToPDskIpNMTPXNDstZbAdR3lVewE
Facebook is basically one huge advertisement. If they put advertisements in games, advertising psychology may as well just take over my brain and make me buy things.
If I see an ad in game... I won't buy it period. I don't wanna see some Fucking air jordan ad while I'm trying to play a game, cause you know ot won't be off to the side. I would have no problems at all with product placement in Titan in exchange for a lack of subscription fees. Plus it would make the game feel a bit more "Real" and "Current"
Hahahahahahahahahahahah Blizzard passing up a chance to charge suscription fees! YA RIGHT. More like product placement is just another source of profit ON TOP of subscription fees and more than likely a D3 style real money AH.
Put the advertising in, i got no problem hacking a demon in some sweet air max's then drinking a cold bottle of coke to refresh my characters thirst... As long as its free hahaha

Gabe Newell also talks about how most DRM work by introducing elements of uncertainty, and how that is a shitty way to do DRM. Good examples are the PC releases of spore and assassin's creed 2. Both games had draconian DRM aimed at stopping pirates, but all they accomplished was punishing honest customers, while pirates weren't even slowed down. I actually bought spore on release, but a driver issue crashed my install, and the DRM locked me from the game telling me to buy additional game keys
i actually tought about this idea of brands having comercials in games like APB would really fit with the big boards and stuff on buildings and cars and what not ...
I wouldn't mind product placement in games that it makes since in... Like if the game was located in a city, and there were billboards or tvs playing commercials in store windows, as long as it blends in well. I would HATE a game that does product placement where it doesn't belong, such as Diablo. "go talk to gheed, manager of the Walmart Hut, across from McDonalds Mill"
Product placement will never replace subscriptions, because Blizzard is all about the money (like most things in capitalism) since they merged with Activision and they don't give that much about fans anymore! Just look at the missing LAN support in SC2 and the forced online connection at all times in D3 (the reason why I won't buy it unless it costs me less than 25€).
For me, I like when they update their games in means of fixing bugs, bringing balance and adding some content, then i dont see reason why not to purchase the game. I dont like when they just sell overpridec game and dont care about it after release.
Agreed! The download stores Force mentions will only be viable, once they got the bandwidth. Just look at the connection problems Skyrim (and other Steam games) had on activation day.
I like the approach of CD Projekt and once I've gotten around playing the first title of The Witcher series and think about playing the second one I will most likely buy it on Amazon because of the physical benefits associated with the premium edition.
with product placement in Titan, i would assume that it wont be a fantasy genre like WoW, which means i probably wont be playing it, just dont like the sci-fi genre
Been keeping an eye on GW2 for a while. Been looking for something to replace WoW, and SW:TORs endgame just hasn't looked too special yet. Hopefully GW2 plays as good as it looks - as it looke AMAZING.
I pirated Masseffect 2 because i tried to rent ME1 and play it on console and hated it ME2 on the Pc i loved The reason i went and bought both ME1 and ME2 was because i wanted to have character crossover from ME1 to ME2 apparently I didn't need to buy them to have the cross over but i thought I did o yes better "services" are the way to kill off 50% of the pirates because most of the time we are more enticed into having cool features from the provider on creation of account than have 50% of them

@netbookeater i would purposely not play a game that was double dipping like that, i don't care how good of a game it might be. that shows complete disreguard and disrespect to the audience you are trying to appeal to...
Piracy is all about getting somehting without paying for it. People don't want to pay for products and think that the have a right to steal casue the world owes them 1. If u can't afford the game save up for it. Gaming is a luxury not a right
@coramcstrap Actually, there are people that pirate a game, cause they want to know what they spend their money on. There's too many crappy games out there, that are way too expensive. I pirated fallout 3, then I bought it cause I enjoyed it... So I agree with what force says. More demo's, same release dates and competitive prices will do the trick for most people. Of course there will always be the cheap bastards that want a game for free. But you will keep people like that always.
@coramcstrap I completely disagree with everything you just said. Video games are designed for entertainment purposes, just like TV shows and movies. I torrent them not because I can't pay for them, but because I don't appreciate the way it's being done. We should be able to buy something and own it. That means do whatever we want with it. Why not? What's so wrong with getting what you paid for? Without people like me, sites like hulu and netflix would never exist. We forced them to change.
@GhostTheSmoker So to prove your point u steal. Two wrongs don't make a right. Rather then use legal means u chose to break the law resulting the only people who really suffer are the people who purchase games legaly. Without Pirates DRM and the like wouldn't be required. @GhostTheSmoker Rather then use legal means u chose to break the law resulting the only people who really suffer are the people who purchase games legaly. Without Pirates DRM and the like wouldn't be required. You can't say u don't like the solution when your part of the problem.
Maybe Blizz evaluate the possibility of a free to play mmo. But given this is Blizzard, they are going to try to enhance the system. An example would be some kind of mixed system: subscription-based ad-free or ad-hevy and free to play. Of course this is a very raw example, but you get the idea. And I think it's only going to end good for us.
Sometime in 2006 I had this idea to put real life stuff in game that would work as an advertising and would pay for game. At that time I had an idea for self creating MMORPG where players would create that world from empty desert.
I bet I wasn't even close to be 1st who came up with that, but I think it is very good business model. Then those who can pay is paying but those who can't... well... they could not pay anyway.
if anyone can pull off mmo-fps it's blizzard, and product placement in a game... why not?
we get ads when we do anything online anyway. plus, if there's a way for me to get 10cents off my next can of coke if i buy a nuke-it cola in game i'll take it.
how to fight piracy? make it free to play and get monies from ads and micro purchases.
Product placement i'm okay with, as long as it fits the game, and depending on how in your face it is, i'd expect it would remove the need for my to pay a subscription to the game.
Empty coke can on the ground here and there, well i'll still pay for a sub, but bilboards everywhere, probably wouldn't be happy to still pay for a sub
I've been waiting for GW2 , especially since SWTOR was a bit disappointment for me, dont get me wrong, its not a bad game but certanly not a game changer as it was promoted.
I completely agree with Gabe Newell. In order to stop Piracy, producers should stop treating their consumers like criminals and take responsability on themselves, and ask "why are people pirating this game?". When they think they know the answer, like Valve does, they need to work to fix to from their end. Companies like Ubisoft are going about it entirely the wrong way, and will be out of business in the near future if they don't addapt to the new and modern market place.
If I can't pay for a game with PayPal, I don't buy it. The last time I went to a brick and mortar store was when I turned 12.
If a game restricts me from playing with my friends across the ocean, I don't buy it. The last regionlocked game I purchased was Starcraft 2, and I only made that exception because I am hoping they will remove the lock with the HotS expansion pack.
After googling to find out what it was, I decided I like the idea of in game Product Placement paying for subscription fees.
@x3ICEx I'm 22 now, so that was 10 years ago. I think I bought Worms 2 / Worms Armageddon for 5$.
I am a sucker for the Galaxy Editor that comes with Starcraft 2, so even if they don't remove the region lock I am still likely to get HotS. But much whining will be posted on their forums if they neglect to implement that change!
Product placement, or embedded marketing, is a form of advertisement, where branded goods or services are placed in video games. A context that is usually devoid of ads.
For example i live in south africa and star wars the old republic has not come out here and EA South Africa says they not sure when it will be so i have had to pay way more than i would have had to pay because i had to get it from an overseas store.
It's funny how the only advancements in gaming from Blizzard lately has been based around increasing financial gains and not concentrating on product quality. E.g. RMAH and product placement. I admit though, I like the potential of both of these ideas.
Force... the reason its not available around the world isn't due to physical restrictions. It's because they're using the sales revenue from the initial release to FUND the expensive process of localization and to gauge whether the game will likely make it worth that process.
Sometimes I wonder if you even think about what you say on this before you say it...
Yess, I wouldn't mind advertisements at all if it means I get to play Titan for free. The main reason why I've never played WoW is because I just hate the thought of subscription fees.
My thought is people pirate things because they either aren't readily available by purchase or aren't of good enough quality for the consumer to purchase.
Activision Blizzard would charge a subscription fee to us anyway, more money to Blizzard, more money to Activision. From a business sense they would be stupid not to.
@Ball1st1cTomato It would enhance the experience if the game is set in modern time, imagine an mmo in a modern city and seeing billboards for movies actually in theaters or seeing a coke machine with actual real soda brands instead generic made up ones, that would immerse you deeper into the experience and make the world more believable.
I really dislike ingame ads. I go to the store and am advertised to. I come home and get on the internet or watch tv and am advertised to. I read a newspaper or a magazine and am advertised to. There is almost no where safe to be left alone. If the advertising is done in a way that actually does enhance my experience thats one thing, or if it is placed so that I'm not forced to constantly look at it thats another. But I don't think that I'd be willing to constantly see adds for any reason.
Thanks for answering my question Force, I was rather skeptical of if you'd feature it or not since it was quite long winded! Its nice to hear different opinions on such an issue. I can't wait to get an inside look at Guild Wars2 *fingers crossed*.
As far as in-game advertising goes, I could easily condone product placement on billboards or vending machines, or fast food restaurants.
Borderlands MMO please! nvm firefall is basically going to be that. Eventually all new games are going to be about 40 bucks with a ton of micro transaction stuff like dlc and cosmetics. its a bleak future, but hopefully by the time that happens i will have found a better hobby :P
@trxmor companies pay blizzard to "place" their products into the game. As Force said, they would come in the form of their products being on bulletins in game - so if they sold (for example) hairspray, then the in game bulletin would be a hairspray ad for their company.
@Joshieboy150 That depends allot on how they're done don't you think? Assume a game-style like GTA with product advertising on vending machines lining buildings, roadside billboards, fast food franchises... I could certainly put up with a Mc'Donalds instead of Cluckin' Bell and Mountain Dew vending machines. If they're invasive product placements, EG. playing an advertisement when you log in before you can play, that however would be un-acceptable.
@Kastoli1 I totally agree. It really depends on how they set the advertisements up. I just think that with time, advertisements could ruin or be quite annoying in the game because once Blizzard allows them, I believe they would be more difficult to get rid of. In addition, I would think that once they prove to be a success or aren't proving to help out the company as much as they might first speculate, they will have to add more and more advertisements.
The problem is in poor countries the cost of internet is also high so most people go to LAN's where they share their media. Untill internet cost come down in the third world we will have piracy.

I bet I wasn't even close to be 1st who came up with that, but I think it is very good business model. Then those who can pay is paying but those who can't... well... they could not pay anyway.

I think the Blizzard job posting almost confirms that Project Titan will be some modern or almost modern game. Which could be very interesting.

Yeah, now we get the Mc Donalds Sword, the Coca Cola Bow and some Nike Boots. Blizz just dont have enough money, so its ok :/.....

if anyone can pull off mmo-fps it's blizzard, and product placement in a game... why not?
we get ads when we do anything online anyway. plus, if there's a way for me to get 10cents off my next can of coke if i buy a nuke-it cola in game i'll take it.
how to fight piracy? make it free to play and get monies from ads and micro purchases.

For the Guild Wars 2 fans.
There is a channel called: "GuildWarsCommunity". They have good videos about Guild Wars 2 and they will upload Guild Wars 2 Beta Videos.
I think it's a great channel, so if you want to check out, go ahead.
I just tell this, because I think you guys want to subscribe, but you don't know about them yet.

After googling to find out what it was, I decided I like the idea of in game Product Placement paying for subscription fees.
x3ICEx 1 month ago
@x3ICEx I'm 22 now, so that was 10 years ago. I think I bought Worms 2 / Worms Armageddon for 5$.
A context that is usually devoid of ads.
x3ICEx 1 month ago
@x3ICEx Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty already has joke product placements, such as:
Nuke Cola "Destroy thirst."
Nuke Noodles "Calldown the flavor!"
iPistol "Take your shot at life."

I honestly never thought of ads in video games but if it was done in a "creative" way it would be fine(ie "nuka" cola in fallout etc).

My thought is people pirate things because they either aren't readily available by purchase or aren't of good enough quality for the consumer to purchase.

@trxmor companies pay blizzard to "place" their products into the game. As Force said, they would come in the form of their products being on bulletins in game - so if they sold (for example) hairspray, then the in game bulletin would be a hairspray ad for their company.

I'd rather pay a subscription fee. Advertisements would just be annoying if they were allowed in gameplay.
Joshieboy150 1 month ago
@Joshieboy150 That depends allot on how they're done don't you think? Assume a game-style like GTA with product advertising on vending machines lining buildings, roadside billboards, fast food franchises... I could certainly put up with a Mc'Donalds instead of Cluckin' Bell and Mountain Dew vending machines. If they're invasive product placements, EG. playing an advertisement when you log in before you can play, that however would be un-acceptable.
Kastoli1 1 month ago
@Kastoli1 I totally agree. It really depends on how they set the advertisements up. I just think that with time, advertisements could ruin or be quite annoying in the game because once Blizzard allows them, I believe they would be more difficult to get rid of. In addition, I would think that once they prove to be a success or aren't proving to help out the company as much as they might first speculate, they will have to add more and more advertisements.
