I met a tribe of Xhosa people in South Africa who treat their animals like crap. Tying a horse to a tree by it's fetlock. Riding with a piece of rope through the horses mouth as a bit. They do it this way because they always have. It's all they know. It's they way their ancestors did it.

I'm not defending them at all. What they do is wrong in so many ways, but it's their way. I tried to teach a few young Xhosa kids how to make a simple rope bridle, you wouldn't believe their gratification, not only did their horses respond better but they were happier. They just need to be taught how to do things.
