the first time I heard the beatles's bass properly WAS IN A NEW WAVE NIGHT CLUB, and they were cranking "I saw her standing there" with the bass cranked up, WAAAAAY UP, and THAT got me going.... the average kid's stereo in the 60s HAD NO BASS AT ALL coming from those tiny four inch radio speakers... is it me or do the newer releases ALL HAVE a much better response than our old records and broadcasts did?
Beatles didn't come up with the bassline on I Saw Her Standing There. Paul himself said that almost the whole bassline was taken from Chuck Berry's song I'm Talking About You which they have performed in Hamburg and at the BBC.
@ZachariasWilbury96 Lucille....... according to my luthier, who did my custom five string fretless, Sir Paul WAS A HUGE fan and though he was little richard, which is where Sir P. got the inspiration for screams in beatles songs from, too...... I was learning "I saw her standing there" 's bass line one day and it REALLY sounded familiar, but I'm also a REALLY BIG FAN of little richard ( saw him live not long ago, FOUR HOUR SHOW! super high intensity at 80!) and know a large portion of his stuff
@tadsharpe You're right! It sounds like both ''I'm Talking About You'' & ''I Saw Her Standing There''. Well, since the Beatles were inspired by both Berry & Richard it's not strange that they sound similar. Rock on fellas!!
Paul never had a "flashy" bass style like say, Jack Bruce or John Entwistle, but every bass line he recorded with the Beatles was clean, and the perfect line for each song. As good a song as 'Something' is, try imagining it without that delicious bass line! For that reason, I think Paul is one of the greatest bassists!
I think it is a pretty good list. Interesting that some of Paul's best work are on songs where he is not lead singing: Rain, Something, Hey Bullfrog, Come Together.
I would have added Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey from White Album.
i might be wrong but i always thought the helter skelter (bass) line was played by john on his fender 6 barritone guitar.... i cant remember where i read it, but you cant trust everything you read ey :P Peace from holland !
@samusthpf it's a six-string electric bass or Scale Baritone (wikiP.) so I would say that it's both. pretty cool guitar and really rare. i wish they'd take these back into production, I don't even care if it's an american or a mexican made model. i've seen some custom shop made models, but they go for about 4000 dollars on Ebay...
Paul was/is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. He's normally thought of as a singer/songwriter but people forget what a capable bass player he really is.
Paul played excellent bass parts on so many songs. On Anthology listen to Good Morning, Good Morning and And Your Bird Can Sing. Great bass player! Without Paula bass parts The Beatles wouldn't have been half as good. Melodic, rhythmic, imaginative, witty!
Good list. But move taxman up (to #1 imo!) and take that #1 off the list, that's just a well executed boogie-woogie bass line, no big deal. Pretty much everything else is genius, tho.
Worst #1 ever! I love the rest of the list however. Something is his best work with the Beatles on bass. I agree that Paperback Writer should be on the list as well as I want You She's So Heavy!
Great list! But then, name ANY Beatles tune without a standout bass track. And, let's not forget to thank Ringo whose atomic backbeat makes everything the Beatles did 'pop' out of the speakers.
@shubh22u I saw a quote from George saying how he managed to get Paul to play the taxman bassline in an indian way, so I reckon George wrote it but Paul played? You may be right though.
@StillLifeWithMangoes I don't have a source for this (maybe anthology?), but paul has talked about how he used an "indian like" style in the guitar solo (not bassline) for taxman. :)
Ok I only like about 3 of your choices...and in taxman Paul plays the guitar so he is doing the guitar solo...therefore not playing bass in that song...and what about Boys? I quite like that bass line for an early beatles song.
@Nacho66 Actually, on taxman, Paul did play both bass and guitar (using overdubs). The NuSonic bass played by George may have been used for "She Said She Said." (George played bass on that because Paul was not at the studio while they recorded it (possibly because of a fight).
Mate you should put "Dear Prudence", "With a Little Help From My Friends", seriously those are 2 of the most brilliant bass lines. The bassline on "Michelle" is absolutely stunning as well.
@TheGrubification Nope, you've misunderstood there-they had an argument over it-George said it was 'too busy' but Macca came up with it and it stayed as it was but George grumbled about it for years afterwards in interviews (even though most people rate it highly as a great, melodic bass line). Paul-''I was just trying to do my best for the song''
Thumbs up if you get here from the top ten best bass lines, got pissed off for it being a crappy video, clicked this not realizing it had Beatles in the title and was wondering why there was so much Beatles :D :D
ONE SONG TOWERS ABOVE ALL OTHERS AND YOU MISSED IT!!! NOWHERE MAN!!! Go on, strap on a bass, jack and and try, just try, to keep up!!! The song is so poorly recorded that you can barely hear it but his bass playing is POSITIVELY LIQUID---its as if he double tracked the bass to get all the notes in. Although Lovely Rita has some stellar chops in it---he cheated by recording the bass separately; NOWHERE MAN was played in real time. NOTHING COMPARES TO NOWHERE MAN!!! World's finest Bassist!!!
In "I'm a Loser," Paul McCartney's bass playing in the chorus section really propels the song forward, giving it more punch than it would have had with a simpler bass line. I believe that his skillful bass playing has been overshadowed by his huge talent in singing and songwriting. He is a talented all-round musician, composing music of diverse styles, writing beautiful melodies and lyrics, and playing multiple instruments well. How many musical artists can boast such talent and accomplishment?
Of course it's personal preference, but the Come Together bass line is the greatest in rock history. A friend of mine once demonstrated his new surround sound set-up; by playing Come Together at a fairly high volume. Half of his house was vibrating w/ the bass w/ minimal distortion.
You guys do know that Paul McCartney stole the bassline of "I Saw Her Standing There" from a Chuck Berry song right? He even admitted to it in and interview:)
But who cares, he is still the sole reason basses are cool. Oh and Geddy Lee:)
Great list! Paul was actually very underrated as far as his bass playing went.
I never really thought of Mr. Kite having a great bass line but your right. Also the bass line on "I Saw Her Standing There" makes the whole song. Without that bass line "I Saw" is just king of basic fast tempo 12 bar blues.
Can't stand "Helter Skelter" and "Something", even with great bass lines. The bass line in I Saw Her Standing There is active, but nothing special. The badass break in I Want You/She's So Heavy was the first thing I taught myself on the bass when I was fourteen.
@bulletproofmonkey101 FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO HAS EARS!!! If Guitar Heros had a 'Hyper-advance' mode, I would force people to play NOWHERE MAN. I have witnessed more Professional Studio Musicians stumble while playing that stupid song. They all whine the same "Too many notes, way too fast. The dude was supposed to be simply playing the melody instead Macca plays the base as if its the lead-fuckin' guitar'. I bet Lennon slipped him some PRELLIES and shouted 'Machte Show' before the lite went on!
I FUCKING LOVE THE BEATLES AND THE BASS IS SOOO AWESOME!!! THEY DONT USUALLY GET CREDIT FOR THAT BUT I DARE TO SAY PAUL IS THE BEST BASSIST IN THE WORLD!!
Rain, Rich Man, Hey Bulldog, Come Together/Something, Michelle, Dont Let Me Down, Prudence, Sexy Sadie, Paperback Writer, Magical Mystery Tour, Do you want to suck my penis, err, I mean Do You Want to Know a Secret, Yer Blues, Brown Shoe....
There were some good basslines. I think there were too many good ones to chose from. I like the one in "Lucy in the sky with diamonds:" But hey, cheers for doing what you did. That would have been a hard list for me to tackle.
@OctoberBret It's from Rubber Soul. However, it's a great bass line, but fairly simple with Paul throwing in some fills. Remember it IS* not "was" a great bass line, but won't make it fair in my list though.
Just looking through the comments, thanks to everyone who commented and watched. The feedback is great and you can all officially take Mr Kite and Penny Lane off and put Old Brown Shoe and I Want You (She's So Heavy) in there someone.
@gamblor1138 This is a really fun video and subject for Beatles fans or bass fans. So - here's my two cents worth. About the #1 selection I Saw Her Standing There - I have some dissapointing news to share with Beatles' and McCartney fans. The bass line is riveting and the song is a rock-n-roll landmark, but McCartney lifted the bass line from Chuck Berry's I'm Talking About You. I was sad to learn it, but, it's not original enough to be #1. Something, I Want You or One after 909 = 1
nice to see george's and john's bass performances in there too! people always forget the how they played bass very well, mainly George, but John rocks too. But I prefer John in Back in the ussr than in Helter skelter. Paul playing skelter in the bass - just see his show - is pretty much better than John in White album. Oh, btw, I love I saw her standing there bass line, but its now totally from Paul , cuz he stole a part from another song, so I'd not vote this song hhaha :^)
I completely agree with your top 3 =] some of the 4-10 i mostly agree with but i would have put i want you (she's so heavy) in there somewhere =] but i really like this video
Great list! In my opinion: 1. Rain 2. Penny Lane 3. Baby, You're A Rich Man 4. The Word 5. Taxman 6. Come Together 7. Helter Skelter (Go John!) 8. Hey Bulldog 9. Glass Onion 10. I'm Only Sleeping
Interesting. Here's mine: 1) I Want You (She's So Heavy) 2) Something 3) Day Tripper 4) Rain 5) Paperback Writer 6) Taxman 7) Come Together 8) Penny Lane 9) Dear Prudence 10) Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
10) Taxman 9) Paperback Writer 8) Nowhere Man 7) Come Together 6) Don't Let Me Down 5) Something 4) Abbey Road Medley 3) Hey Bulldog 2) Rain 1) I Want You (She's So Heavy) *I Saw Her Standing There isn't included in the list because Paul originally didn't invent that bass riff, he borrowed it from "I'm Talking About You" by Chuck Berry.
Most of Paul's best 4 string work was always on songs that he wasn't singing lead on . Taxman /Something - 2 of George's (and the Beatles ) best tunes and 2 of Sir Paul's best basslines !
@gamblor1138 New, updated list (sometimes I change my mind, because I discover more and more bass lines), but I think this a better choice than the previous one: 10) Paperback Writer 9) Taxman 8) Come Together 7) Don't Let Me Down 6) Something 5) Nowhere Man 4) Abbey Road Medley* 3) Hey Bulldog 2) Rain 1) I Want You (She's So Heavy) *I really never wanted to let any of those Abbey Road Medley songs out so I just wanted to put them together like this, all of them got great bass lines.
@jonk1964 Good call. Since making this video, I've heard Old Brown Shoe and it's now one of my fovourite songs, let alone one of my favourtie Beatles songs. Brilliant bass line too. Take it as replacing Penny Lane or somthing in the list.
the first time I heard the beatles's bass properly WAS IN A NEW WAVE NIGHT CLUB, and they were cranking "I saw her standing there" with the bass cranked up, WAAAAAY UP, and THAT got me going.... the average kid's stereo in the 60s HAD NO BASS AT ALL coming from those tiny four inch radio speakers... is it me or do the newer releases ALL HAVE a much better response than our old records and broadcasts did?

Great video. my favorite Beatles bass line is "Everybody´s got something to hide except for me and my monkey" .

nice to see george's and john's bass performances in there too! people always forget the how they played bass very well, mainly George, but John rocks too.

Most of Paul's best 4 string work was always on songs that he wasn't singing lead on . Taxman /Something - 2 of George's (and the Beatles ) best tunes and 2 of Sir Paul's best basslines !

Something - which I believe is #1, but I'll give you a pass :) is a very underrated bass performance by Sir Paul.

@jonk1964 Good call. Since making this video, I've heard Old Brown Shoe and it's now one of my fovourite songs, let alone one of my favourtie Beatles songs. Brilliant bass line too. Take it as replacing Penny Lane or somthing in the list.
