  • That knife is a little less awkward than a bat. Almost any bird you can just rip the skin by hand, no knife, especially THAT knife. Just get a Mora for the love of God. Having a hand axe there is no need for show knives

    Lot of meat on pheasant. Breast is the least fat which you want if you're hungry. Liver, gizzard, heart & neck are good. Crop won't hurt meat, intestines will

    Skin is highest calorie part=plucking is very efficient. Why work hunting hours because you waste the best parts? Crazy

  • @tblbaby To add, pull out the big feathers, sometimes you have to go few by few or one by one on the biggest or skin rips. The smaller feathers just burn off over the fire. Cooked feet & head are edible, even tasty, definitely food. If you're really hungry drink the blood strait or heat & eat the lungs too after cooking, it's ok ; )

  • about staking the bird down, I would say actually tying them to a tree branch and allowing them to roost is much better, that way it's harder for predators to come along and snatch your bird while you're out hunting. I find that a bucket with a cover with holes in it is just as effective and keeps them safe from predators.

  • @pringle51 impossible to know just by looking at it, but in general they only breed in the early spring and lay within a month of breeding and then they'll have their eggs incubating for another month. I'd say as long as your not hunting in the spring time in general, you should be fine.

  • @pringle51 Birds are never pregnant, they lay eggs. Pheasants lay eggs in the early part of the year if you have a problem with killing eggs or females with chicks. If you worry about that in a survival situation where you really need food, then you're probably not meant to live anyway.

  • great video, a quicker way though. After you kill the bird , lay it on it's back , step on it's wings and pull hard on the feet.

  • I have seen videos that show what seems to be a much easier way to process a pheasant. They basically step on the wings and just pull the bird.

  • @strammel That's how i learned how to do it, spread the wings, step on them, and pull from the legs and all the innards come out, and you can still use the wing meat if you would like. Very minimal waste

    Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you wearing Carhart pants? I love that brand and that particular style. Double front and rugged as hell. In my job I keep my dykes and wire strippers in the right side and my Streamlight in the left. Those are the tools I use most.

  • @puppetmaster6483 I'm no expert like Dave, but I've killed my fair share of game animals: Truth is, I always feel a tiny bit bad. But I remind myself that it's been happening for literally billions of years, I'm doing it for food and skin and whatever else I can use and not out of cruelty or malice, and it's being done humanely. Animals in nature usually aren't too worried if their prey is still alive when they start eating, as long as it's incapacitated. We at least can make it quick for them.

  • idk if its just me but i have always found that skinning a bird is best done starting on the back , quartering is done is always done from the chest.

  • Hi HalfQ and thanks for the response. I understand and have done the same, many times myself. I just get a little perturbed when people want things perfect. We all have that tendency but this is survival and things aren't going to be perfect. I like the fact that this is real, messy and sometimes maybe even wrong but it got done and was usable. That gives me confidence to try. This statement was not to you but to all who have to nit-pick instead of offering suggestions. Thanks again Friend.

  • Great video guys as always, but I do have one thing to mention, with the crop you shouldn't throw it away, you could cut it down the middle and peel the skin that has the berries and rocks and whatever it has in it and cook it it's actually one of the best parts of the bird!

  • A faster way to skin a bird is put your feet as close to the body as you can wile still on the wings the bird should be on its back and you just grab the feet and pull up. It's been a wile sense I got a pheasant so thats all I remember on how to do it.

  • Wouldn't standing on the two spread wings and then using both hands to pull on the legs be much easier? BushcraftBartons made a video on this with a partridge. It was seamless.

  • an easy way for the wings to stop from coming back towards the body (4:04) is to "massage" the wing. By that i mean to to kind of rotate it back and forth to relieve the tension in the muscle. This guy shows what i mean v=WHmyAoY-HrA

  • I use a Cold Steel Bird & Trout knife to dress all the game birds I harvest. It's as sharp as a straight razor and small enough to get into all the small places. The built-in ring for your little finger is a great design feature. It gives you a great pivot point as you move the blade tip through it's work.

    I usually just pull what feathers I want, snap off lower wings, pull the intestines out the vent (or not), then tuck the bird into the coals, rotating occasionally until done. Much less energy expenditure than in video yielding a moist, tasty meal. I do the same with small mammals & fish.

But can only give a B- for prep.& execution, Jeremy should have used a more appropriate size and a much sharper knife to show how every thing goes when all is perfect and let us make adjustments if we're not 100% squared away, because more than likely most won't be. Love your videos lots of them make me think to myself (what if). And I do hope HalfQ does unsub we really don't need anymore of his nonsense.

  • Great Vid but you looked a little unpracticed at skinning a Bird :) Those are some great easting i usally skinn my birds aswell after hunting.

  • the knife has to be a pathfinder blade, Critter use too use one... the vid is excelent, too many people buy meat from the shops, wraped in plastic. But they arent able too secure a meat source themselves let alone process an animal. good job Dave. Keep it up.

  • I used to process pheasants as a source of work, in my experience you can pull the legs apart and rip the skin open to save the blade a little bit.

  • Hey Dave there is a way to cook the chicken without plucking the feathers it's called begged chicken. You put mud all over the bird and put it in the fire. When the mud hardens up it will steam cook the bird. When the bird cooked crack the mud and the feather will come off with it.

  • Pheasant with out spitting out bird shot, now that's the ticket. Their skin is not tough at all.

    Here's a nifty trick for cleaning pheasants. Place them on the ground breast up, step on their wings with each foot and pull both legs at the same time. The bird litterally jumps out of it's skin. Must faster, much cleaner. If it's a bird that is pretty shot up it doesn't work that great and the bird can be pulled in half. Fyi..

  • @HalfQ One question if you are a Game Keeper whay would you need to kill anything off the land? the other thing is he was using the knife he had even if it was not best for the job you may not have a choice at times brother. Yes this was my farm raised pheasant, I raise Pheasants,Quail, Goats and rabbits, using them for demos like this is very educational and keeps me from having to hope and pray a trap will work when this is not a real survival situation.

  • @wildernessoutfitters I was out with a friend some time ago, teaching him how to stalk animals. I was showing him how to slither more or less, inchworm whatever you want to call it. We stalked right up on a duck, I motioned for him to reach out for it, he touched it and it had a panic attack trying to get away, scared him, scared me because didnt expect that reaction. I couldnt help but laugh at him because his eyes were as big as shotglasses and he jumped like he was shot. Good times ^_^

    About the question; the birds are for the guns when the season starts. You know how big pheasant drives are in the UK. I take from the edges and never need to take from the stock. You have so many people that look up to you and follow every word, quite the responsibility you have. Sorry again brother.

  • Up here in Ak better to pull off the feathers... If your trying to eat calories ... Your best bet is to dry pluck, clean and boil the whole bird. You get the fat, the marrow and all the nutrients arnt dripped into a fire. You also get the hydration and warmth from the soup mixture. Just an observation.

  • When I was a kid my family kept chickens for eggs and meat, from age 5 I've been harvesting meat from birds. Between birds and rabbits I've kept and harvested my own meat my whole life, and for that I'm greatfull to my family.

  • 1st - Love your videos. 2nd - I'm glad you did this one on a "biblically clean" animal. Some of us don't eat certain things for spiritual reasons. Even though I am a survivalist, I intend to starve if I don't find "clean" animals to eat. That or become a vegetarian "temporarily".

  • Thank guys - this is one of those things that, while I don't like it, I know I need it (i.e. need to learn it). I don't get any joy out of harvesting sea life as it is, but it's all been a learning process and, heck, we've all gotta eat - so it 's just one of those things that needs to be done.
