  • I wish you'd let the applause go on a bit at the end! This was a very nice piece, deserving a good round of applause. I also want to comment that this is the first time I've seen a Black woman conducting an orchestra of any kind. Maybe that's because I don't get out enough, but please forgive me. I grew up during the civil rights struggle, and I wonder if this passionate conductor's mother ever thought it possible when she was young. Her directions are clear, passionate, and unmistakable. U GO!

  • You play WAY better than us on this song

  • @nemo012350 They did use it, but the music is from a ballet called Rodeo.

  • hehehe 69 likes

  • Absolutely amazing for a high school orchestra!

  • Well this inspired me to keep at learning this piece and not give up! Thank you! :D

  • Not bad for a school orchestra. Nicely intoned... Would have been nice to see FULL BOWS!! You've gotta play the part for that piece!

  • ughhh why cant my school have a group this good :(

the trumpet sounded nervous at 1:43

  • we're playing this in my chamber strings group :D

  • Its funny seeing this performed by an orchestra because we play this in my schools concert band

  • exacellet..

few things...it sounds a bit rushed esspecially at the trumpet solo..percussion section is preety good. but the cymbal player needs to choke the cymbal at the i think 2:29...very very very very good dynamics very impressive it doesnt sound like you have crash cymbals you should inverst in a pair...that sound sticks out like a sore thumb.

  • Haha, i know what u mean. They had a tiny pause in the Syd Opera house a few wks ago n about i would say close to 1/2 of the audience clapped! Its just so embarrassing...

  • lol i find it soo annoying when people clap when there's a pause in the piece thinking it's over. hahah

  • I know what u mean. The same thing happened in the Sydney Opera House last week and when the pause happened, i would say about 1/2 of the audience in the opera house clapped. It was somewhat embarrassing.

  • I'd say that cello needs to be a little louder at bout 0:25...

  • the flute part to this song is so hard. just this one part though because the fingerings are basically opposite

  • i know right!!

especially when its in that lower register, its like really awkward to play that low.

  • I love the American west!!!!!!!

  • memories.

  • excellent job

  • This piece is really hard

its suppose to be for high schoolers

thats y i hate my school

they make us play it in middle school

  • It's not necessarily for high schools. It's for anyone who can play it =) and it is pretty difficult but fun

  • Hahaha Our band is playing this on our Quebec tour and we are supposed to learn it in 4 rehearsals! lol this will be fun....

  • wow...just wow. that was spectacular, especially for a HS group!

  • My middle school orchestra's playing this song for a concert

  • Wow...I'm suprised...this is excellent! My high school orchestra was the pitts...I wish we were HALF this good!

  • Wow, this is really impressive! We're playing this piece at my school, but we're not cool enough to have any instruments besides strings. :)

  • Its kinda good!!! violins u rock!!!!

  • this sounds amazing... this is a really difficult piece that that San Diego Youth Symphony is learning right now.

Mrs. Paige is an amazing teacher, too!

  • uh yeah, we are amazing. :)

this song was such a pain in the butt to learn, but it was soo worth it.

i mean, look how it turned out. :D

  • Hi.... I am one of the all-state Texas violinst in A&M Conosolidated HS Orchestra... I'm telling you.... if string players (specially violas and violins!) complaining about this.... I saw brass section.... this composer is NUT!!!

  • This is a VERY difficult piece, let alone for a high school group to play. You did a great job and should be proud.

  • we played this at contest 4 days ago and got a 2

    but I think we did pretty good {LoL}

  • My High School Orchestra is just now learning it....it's madness....but I'm sure we can play it. It's not as long as this one, but eh, who cares.

I don't think we'll sound nearly as good as this school!!

The one word to describe this piece is "DAH!!!!" But it is an amazing piece!! :D

  • wow you guys are pretty good for a school orchestra.

  • lol I can only play 1:00 xD

  • wow, when we play this song, it sounds like a bunch of screeching cats!

  • ok this song is amazing. curently the my orchestra is playing it (DSOCivic Orchestra) it is the original version that is crazy. I am second chair oboe and the solos are crazy, but i love them! One thing i do have to say is whoever the oboe player is Play louder!!!!they are solos and need to be played out! jeeze...

  • Aaron was out of his mind when he wrote this. Either that or he didn't honestly expect anyone below city orchestra level to be able to play this. Transitions weren't bad. The screechy cues at 1:16 and again at 3:10 was a little jarring. Tell your trumpets and first string to chill out. Seriously. It's enough to deafen someone. The solo's did an adequate job maybe a little nervous. But not bad. This piece is almost impossible to get right. I wouldn't expect anyone outside of orchestra to get it.

  • i love this song..i know the whole song because i study it in school!!

    its very good!!

  • i love this peice.

  • Iknow it's a hard piece to co-ordinate, but it seemed a bit ragged, sloppy in places even. Still, Aaron was asking a lot for an orchestra to play in complete unison with these time signature switches.Stirring stuff all the same

  • lol. look how she's conducting.....

  • Beautiful.

  • Seeing as I can only see the first violins, they did a great job on articulating their bow styles. :] Great job! The high parts sound good, it's really hard to play those.

  • i played this in a middle school orchestra.

the LAUSD honros string ensemble (: o8 babyy

  • aaron copland is the best composer ever!!!

  • ja, sondern orchestra ist sehr schlecht.

  • ending was great

  • it was okay, but the trumpet player didnt nail the solo. It requires a lot of listening.

  • I'm playing this with the select string ensamble at my school. It is SOOO FUNN!!!

  • i seeee meeee :)

  • It's like I say, this song was not meant for wind instruments, and it is (sadly) proven here, and all the other videos with wind instruments.

The solos sounded good, and overall it was great, but our string ensemble is all strings, and I think it sounds much better with only strings.

  • i agree; even with a good trumpet (which in this case wasn't present), the solo just sounds better with violin. same with the viola part

  • I disagree, respectfully. I believe that it is too difficult for the majority of high school trumpeters, its a solo that requires a lot of technical ability and if the player doesnt have it, you just cant perform the piece well. Same goes for the decending trombone line.

  • Copland is extremely hard to play on the winds. Another example, Outdoor Overture.

The trumpet solo in the beginning is suicidally hard even if you have a lungs of a god.

    Not bad otherwise.

  • excellent, especially the middle section where the tune goes into the higher register for the violins. Copland loved writing up there, up 'in the sky'. Its the section which catches everyone out to begin with. just excellent.

  • its not that bad actually at this pace

  • i love this song i play the violin its so fun

  • hey do pretty good.. i play the viola and my school has played this many times.. its good but the trumpet solo in the middle could use some work

but over all no 2 bad

  • wow very good, im playing the same piece in chamber orchestra and it is insanly hard!! like the rythms r insane, then again im only in 8th grade and so its tough

  • Why does your orchestra director have you playing that in eighth grade? Thats ridiculous.

  • this is a high school playing it...herricks middle school chamber did play this last year because their orchestra kids are insane

  • i have never heard this exact arrangement but i LOVE it! AWESOME JOB!!!!!

  • Cogratulations! Great Work! Amazing for a High Scholl Orchestra. The Coda was the clearest and fittest version I have ever heard!

  • Go SCPA!!!!!!

  • wow very nice job! but this is way under tempo! i had to listen to this song about like twice to realize that it's way under tempo! but besides that great job! but then i compared it to the dallas brass verson on cbs good morning america and they did a bit of this song and they did it at the time that is more recognizable but again great job!!!

  • well you do realize that it IS really hard to play this song at a fast tempo

  • nice violin section, brass needs to step up! lol it was nice.

  • omg i love this song!!!!! it sounds wayyy better than my middle school class and how we play it...... THEY ARE SOOOOOO KOOL THEY HAVE WIND INSTRUMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My highschool orchestra played this once and I got such a kick out of it. This brings back old memories. They had a bit of trouble with the retardando, and some spots had intonation problems, but all-in-all very good.

  • Learn how to spell !!!! "Retardando????" Give me a break. Get a dictionary!!!!!

  • beef its's what's for dinner dum dum dum lol

  • wow, this is great! my teacher gave us this song and we got one shot. when we didn't succeed, he took it up and that was it. :( I wanted to play it soo bad!! you guys are making me jealous! awesome job!

  • WOW these kids have to be given alot of credit with thie piece. Very well done!!

  • Decent quality for a high school orchestra. Some of the higher registers and solos were not together and out of tune. A camcorder does not produce that impressive of audio quality, but none the less, good job!

  • what's for dinner.....BEEF...

  • HAHAHA thats what my dad said when i played that song!!!

  • Quality!

  • i say we stick to the moog synthesizer

  • I mean off the scale as in good!

  • this is a tad slower temp than im used to

    but i likeee it! xD

  • This is totally off the scale O_o

  • god I'm jealous. my high school had three violins (only one of which was decent), no other strings, and our music director arranged the piece in a way that left out all the cool trumpet parts (that I would have done anything to play). you guys rock.

  • That was very good!!!

  • whooo!

    im so proud of us!

  • wow they play really good.=)

  • O I remember when I dance this song in my ballet concert with the teacher, her sister and other girls this song is pretty I love it :)

  • awsome song, who were the dumb asses that started to clap?
