I wish you'd let the applause go on a bit at the end! This was a very nice piece, deserving a good round of applause. I also want to comment that this is the first time I've seen a Black woman conducting an orchestra of any kind. Maybe that's because I don't get out enough, but please forgive me. I grew up during the civil rights struggle, and I wonder if this passionate conductor's mother ever thought it possible when she was young. Her directions are clear, passionate, and unmistakable. U GO!
few things...it sounds a bit rushed esspecially at the trumpet solo..percussion section is preety good. but the cymbal player needs to choke the cymbal at the i think 2:29...very very very very good dynamics very impressive it doesnt sound like you have crash cymbals you should inverst in a pair...that sound sticks out like a sore thumb.
Haha, i know what u mean. They had a tiny pause in the Syd Opera house a few wks ago n about i would say close to 1/2 of the audience clapped! Its just so embarrassing...
I know what u mean. The same thing happened in the Sydney Opera House last week and when the pause happened, i would say about 1/2 of the audience in the opera house clapped. It was somewhat embarrassing.
Hi.... I am one of the all-state Texas violinst in A&M Conosolidated HS Orchestra... I'm telling you.... if string players (specially violas and violins!) complaining about this.... I saw brass section.... this composer is NUT!!!
ok this song is amazing. curently the my orchestra is playing it (DSOCivic Orchestra) it is the original version that is crazy. I am second chair oboe and the solos are crazy, but i love them! One thing i do have to say is whoever the oboe player is Play louder!!!!they are solos and need to be played out! jeeze...
Aaron was out of his mind when he wrote this. Either that or he didn't honestly expect anyone below city orchestra level to be able to play this. Transitions weren't bad. The screechy cues at 1:16 and again at 3:10 was a little jarring. Tell your trumpets and first string to chill out. Seriously. It's enough to deafen someone. The solo's did an adequate job maybe a little nervous. But not bad. This piece is almost impossible to get right. I wouldn't expect anyone outside of orchestra to get it.
Iknow it's a hard piece to co-ordinate, but it seemed a bit ragged, sloppy in places even. Still, Aaron was asking a lot for an orchestra to play in complete unison with these time signature switches.Stirring stuff all the same
Seeing as I can only see the first violins, they did a great job on articulating their bow styles. :] Great job! The high parts sound good, it's really hard to play those.
I disagree, respectfully. I believe that it is too difficult for the majority of high school trumpeters, its a solo that requires a lot of technical ability and if the player doesnt have it, you just cant perform the piece well. Same goes for the decending trombone line.
excellent, especially the middle section where the tune goes into the higher register for the violins. Copland loved writing up there, up 'in the sky'. Its the section which catches everyone out to begin with. just excellent.
wow very good, im playing the same piece in chamber orchestra and it is insanly hard!! like the rythms r insane, then again im only in 8th grade and so its tough
wow very nice job! but this is way under tempo! i had to listen to this song about like twice to realize that it's way under tempo! but besides that great job! but then i compared it to the dallas brass verson on cbs good morning america and they did a bit of this song and they did it at the time that is more recognizable but again great job!!!
omg i love this song!!!!! it sounds wayyy better than my middle school class and how we play it...... THEY ARE SOOOOOO KOOL THEY HAVE WIND INSTRUMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!
My highschool orchestra played this once and I got such a kick out of it. This brings back old memories. They had a bit of trouble with the retardando, and some spots had intonation problems, but all-in-all very good.
wow, this is great! my teacher gave us this song and we got one shot. when we didn't succeed, he took it up and that was it. :( I wanted to play it soo bad!! you guys are making me jealous! awesome job!
Decent quality for a high school orchestra. Some of the higher registers and solos were not together and out of tune. A camcorder does not produce that impressive of audio quality, but none the less, good job!
god I'm jealous. my high school had three violins (only one of which was decent), no other strings, and our music director arranged the piece in a way that left out all the cool trumpet parts (that I would have done anything to play). you guys rock.

My High School Orchestra is just now learning it....it's madness....but I'm sure we can play it. It's not as long as this one, but eh, who cares.
I don't think we'll sound nearly as good as this school!!

It's like I say, this song was not meant for wind instruments, and it is (sadly) proven here, and all the other videos with wind instruments.
The solos sounded good, and overall it was great, but our string ensemble is all strings, and I think it sounds much better with only strings.
AndyvJill 3 years ago
i agree; even with a good trumpet (which in this case wasn't present), the solo just sounds better with violin. same with the viola part

Copland is extremely hard to play on the winds. Another example, Outdoor Overture.
The trumpet solo in the beginning is suicidally hard even if you have a lungs of a god.
Not bad otherwise.
