Iraq is safer now than when Saddam controlled it. He killed more of his own people every year than we did in the invasion. He killed over 10,000 Kurds in a single Sarin gas attack (WMD). During the invasion and shortly after - sure. Now, the majority of Iraq supports the forces still there. They know if we leve completely, they are toast by the extremists. I can't think of too much need for a ship of this capability, and the program has gone grossly overbudget and behind schedule. The program could have funded a few school programs, and maybe then we could have better educated a new generation of diplomats and sociologists and officers. The diplomats to work with potential adversaries, sociologists to understand them, and officers in case the former are beyond helping us. Tools HELP win a war, but are useless without PEOPLE.
If we were to maintain only a modest army and air force and keep a well equipped standing navy, America would be fine. America cannot afford to protect the world, even thought that is a noble cause. If anyone were to attack we could easily hold off any attack until we brought up a massive military counter attack. Look at WW2 where we were relatively unprepared and then had more military power than we had any conceivable need for.

Only the US Congress can authorize the military budget or trim it, and they have already given the Navy the go ahead on the littoral fleet. Pres. Obama has correctly recognized that the threat from Islamic terrorists won't come from the sea as they have no navy. I can't think of too much need for a ship of this capability, and the program has gone grossly overbudget and behind schedule. The program could have funded a few school programs, and maybe then we could have better educated a new generation of diplomats and sociologists and officers. The diplomats to work with potential adversaries, sociologists to understand them, and officers in case the former are beyond helping us. Tools HELP win a war, but are useless without PEOPLE.

If we were to maintain only a modest army and air force and keep a well equipped standing navy, America would be fine. America cannot afford to protect the world, even thought that is a noble cause. If anyone were to attack we could easily hold off any attack until we brought up a massive military counter attack. Look at WW2 where we were relatively unprepared and then had more military power than we had any conceivable need for.
