Nothin wrong with playing like your heros! Ralph, Scruggs and Crow were all heros of mine for different reasons. Roll bits and pieces of them all into your playing and you have created your own style of playing. I have been on the circuit for the last five years with Marty Raybon, Don Rigsby and have filled in with everyone from Barry Scott to Ralph II. Playing like your heros has made Sparkman a living for a long while! No shame in it!
Thank You So Much for your comments! I have worked on this song a lot and that DVD beats em all. My favorites to pick are Midnight Ramble and Clinch Mountain Backstep. I would put a video up of me playing them except for copyright issues on YouTube. One of my goals one day is to own a Stanleytone.
I like to pick the banjo like Ralph and Steve, but I am not trying to make a career or be a copycat. Steve's instructional dvd is great for learning all the ins and outs of the Stanley style. I'll post some more videos soon.
I play the banjo my own style, but in this video I specifically tried to transcribe the song exactly how Ralph use to play it. If you got a problem with keeping the Stanley style alive, go tell that to Steve Sparkman.
i get what you're saying ,and im glad that everybody doesnt play exactly the same.but most people will emulate their favorite player to a certain degree.i do play a lot like ralph, and i get many compliments from people who love that style.but i also venture out into other styles also. i just get a rush when i can nail it the way in hear it on a cd.i guess thats my style
I myself Like to learn it just like someone but the thing is When I play a show people dont wanna see someone play just like ralph...Ralph him self told people to do it their own style...
How do you think earl scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Don Reno, Sammy Shellor,Dave Evans, myself and every other banjer picker made it big....?
If everyone played the same, ask yourself what would it be like?

@bentleyks63 If you're willing to buy me one, I'll accept that.
You don't have to have an archtop just to play Stanley-style. Just saying.
