ok enough with the pick talk. who cares how he plays.. there are more than one way to play bass GUITAR.. the bass is a guitar people like it or not its not a drum set or whatever else its a BASS GUITAR.. people slap, pluck, pick, tap, when u buy a bass it doesnt say "use 2 or 3 fingers to vibrate the string" its all SOUND..
thats what makes music music.. if all bassists played the same style it wouldnt be as interesting
@NICojUanes AS a 50 year old plus player whom has gigged mostly in clubs & large outdoor / civic events, I think you are so right. I just leave it up to the player to play how they want to. I find that it's the finger only players whom think they have something that can only be done ONE WAY. Immature. As a 80 percent finger/20 percent pick player I'm all about " Do what you do, never stop learning and experimenting" Music is all about that- Discovery through learning and your own creativity.
Andy Hess never really fit in the mold of the Mule. I liked him ,but there better of now Jorgen is a much much better Fit and a bigger presence than Hess.
Along with Mountain's "Never in My Life," this excellent jam has licks from "Mr. Big," originally done by Free -- a great band from the late 60's.
There are at least two clips of the song performed by Free on YouTube.
Free's Andy Fraser wrote many great songs and some unbelievable bass lines during his time with the band. I've heard many covers of the "Mr. Big" bass solo and the one posted here is the best.
They are actualy doing "Mr Big" by Free with a little bit of "Never in my Life" thrown in go good measure! Both are great songs by great bands! I've played both songs and are both so much fun to play!!
Woody worked building guitars for Gibson in Nashville with my friend Denny Lumpkin, according to Denny, when Warren went to jam with the Allmans to see if they were going to hire him they were needing a bass player so Woody went down too, they hired him also......Hess is soulful and with the 4 piece he fits rather well in my opinion...question to all..GOT MULE?...
good solo, man do i miss & also love allen woody, i love his playing, so full of passion and love for music, you can tell he loves music and playing and i love this clip so much
To all you who say that playing bass with a pick is untrue or whatever (and fingerstyle is the only way or whatever): go and tell Mark Knopfler to get a pick!
It's all about the right sound for the right moment guys. Otiel Burbridge from the Allman Bro's plays with and without picks, and not always on the same songs. Its all about the right sound at the right moment. Saying 1 is better than the other is stupid guitar player mentality and NOT musicianship at all, so basically it comes down to this: WHO THE FRICK CARES?
There's no rule that says you have to play bass with fingers. It has everything to do with sound. I use both depending on what kind of attack I'm looking for. I've also heard picked basses sound warm enough for the mix and the room. Tell Chris Squire and Lemmy that basses HAVE to be played with fingers. :rollno:
Those would include Sir Paul McCartney, Bill Wyman, Phil Lynott, Leon Wilkeson, Roger Glover and the list goes on and on. It has nothing to with with whether or not you play with a pick, fingers or your thumb, it's whether or not you play with you heart, soul and ears.....
for me a very important difference between a bass and a guitar is that you can do a lot more percussive with a bass. And a good bass player is --> for me <-- someone who plays in a way you can't do it on a guitar.
LOL what are you on? It has EVERYTHING to do with playing with a pick or fingers. Finger style is a much warmer fatter sound(i.e see "70's bass, JPJones etc). I play both ways, and your comment really makes me roll.
I think that gnbass is saying that just because he plays with a pick or fingers or your thumb doesn't classify you as a goog bassist. That what makes a good bassist is one who can play from there soul, regardless of picking style.
I also use both, and lord knows I use a pick when I play some Mule!
John Paul Jones is known around the world for playing bass with a pick. Pete Townsend of the Who gave him full credit for creating "the 70's bass sound" in Guitar World years ago for playing a Jazz bass with a pick. Lastly, Woody was the best rock and roll bass player I'll die seeing, with possible exception of JPJ who might still be seen on of these days!
Allen Woody: one of the greatest short scale bassist ever!..RIP my Friend! ]0)

I agree 100%. Some of Jorgen's fills are awesome, along with that heavy bass sound.
