How does one volunteer for these things? I would love to be a lab rat and get paid for it. The whole thing's got a delightful MKULTRAish cold-war-secret-underground-ex­­periments feel to it. I was in an MRI once, have to say it wasn't very comfortable. You have to take off all your piercings, and then you have to lie in this tube so narrow the walls are barely an inch away from your face. If something were to happen to the guy in charge of the machine, you could be stuck there for days.

As a graduated psychology student, I can tell you that they don't except lefties because they have to control for EVERYTHING other than the manipulated variable.... Experimenters need to be able to STATISTICALLY show differences and what caused them... When they accept lefties, they are studying something that will not be affected by left hand/right hand brain differences.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I'm a lefty too, so I feel your pain with the whole "not participating in studies" thing.

@xxhintoftearsxx Yes, I understand this. But because they don't then follow this with a study for only lefties there is a problem when they try to generalize their findings to both lefties and righties.

@zlyoga Is it possible that they don't have the time or resources? Also, as you mentioned, left handed people are a small subset of the population... Then take into account that not every left handed person will qualify due to other confounding variables (mental or physical illness, for example)... And the acceptable population gets so small that it is not profitable or even possible to perform a study on such a small population without having skewed or biased results... Sucks, but it happens.

Sorry, I don't reveal where I go to school on YT. There're a lot of great school out there though and finding one of those that also has a good psych program isn't to too hard since it's a popular major.

craigslist is the only place I've had much luck with. I search "study" in the community section. You can also try looking on websites of major hospitals. They often have a research section. Craigslist has been best for me though.

Also if you find one you don't qualify for you can look up the website of whoever is running that study and see if they have others.

I participated in a study recently about the cognitive differences between people born premature and people born at full term. it was loads of fun.

BUT WHEN I WAS A LITTLE CHILD my parents put me in an MRI study and didn't save the pictures of my brain! angst!

I read that too quickly. Since it was a study and not for a medical reason you may not be able to get records because sometimes they destroy the original data at a certain point after publication. Worth a shot though
