Its a contrabassoon, but the build is different; if you want to be technical, it is an experimental instrument designed around the contrabassoon. It has a bottom note of A (instead of tuning to the oboe, maybe we should tune to the kontraforte? :P
oh my god... that is fantastic! Even though the youtube sound quality is dreadful, I am still amazed by the overtones. It must have sounded fantastic in the hall.
It sounds slightly more rough that typical Contrabassoon, but that might depend on reeds and individual style of playing. Dynamic range is pretty impressive, that's probably the strongest side of Kontraforte. Unfortunately, on this video we could not hear any passages in high register, that would be interesting to hear.

@Sax4565 its an double bassoon...:)
pezinokStreet 1 year ago
@pezinokStreet No it's not. A double bassoon is a contrabassoon. I would say this is a triple or quadruple bassoon ;)

I am a string bass player, and I approve of this method of earthshaking! Wow, what dynamic contrast! Who'da thunk?

Well if you look up the contraforte on the Wolf oboes and bassoons websites, you will find that Wolf would'a thunk! LOL

It certainly sounds more powerful than a normal contrabassoon, but you can also play it very quietly. What is your opinion of the instrument?
