Saw Styx on the 16th....And to have everyone singing not only this song but nearly everything that they played was very very awesome, and to have Chuck Panozzo playing bass for a lot of the songs that they played there was awesome.
Oh my gosh!!! I've had this in my favorites for like a year, and only *just* saw all the fun stuff at the end... xD Love this song!! Thanks for posting it!!
@Maskedhaven The typical Rocking James Young Playing, they ALL wrote stuff, all of them contributed on the albums which is what makes this band so fantastic. Half Penny-two penny and MIss America rocks. If you think thinks song Rocks, search Miss America by them, they rock.
obviously a Suite Madame Blue redo, but just as good and maybe better. I'll take 50 rewrites from these real bands than one poop-filled song these days
OMG haven't heard it in years. goosebumps, everything, enks50. I used to practice it just like recaulkulous! now i hear it better. the synth outro KILLS
One of my absolute favorite guitar riffs! I remember practicing and practicing until I got it right... I'm still practicing! James Young! He always reminded me of Tommy Shaw's Dad.
FYI- "Aku-Aku" is the title of Adventurer Thor Heyerdahl's book about his exploration of Easter Island & the giant stone gods scattered around the island.
Wow, I didn't know that! Thanx for enlightening me! The Easter island heads in the background make sense now. Hehehe.
Of your other comment, I miss the in depth fantasy covers they used to produce. In the 70's it was all about appearance. When you bought an album you were buying a piece of artwork. Now when you buy an album you get a cheap cover with no imagination; with the exception of overseas metal bands. They have kept the artwork covers alive.
@ScarlettEnvelope yeah scandinavian prog metal covers are really creative, and that's what I listen to, but this stuff rocks too. Kansas Yes and some others too :)
@ScarlettEnvelope yeah the scandinavian prog metal covers are still rockin on and that's what I listen to, but I also love classic prog rock! too bad these guys faded away so fast.
I remembered being fasinated by the top stadium rock group's album covers thru the late '70s. Funny how many of them went with either a "spaceship" theme(ELO/Boston) or otherworldly "Chariots of the Gods" themes like Styx. The "Pieces Of Eight" cover is a little tricky to decipher- but seems to reflect the vanity of life- an aristocratic rich woman shown from youth to old age(gray hair) from left to right.
@ScarlettEnvelope Not the laugh....it's just before the band kick back in "You Lose" is a middle-aged womans voice and definately not Dennis doing an impersonation.
@vntr2006 WELL I can call Cindy in Chicago, she is his cousin, I have no idea, I always thought it was one of them, I bought this album when it came out in 78. Loved it everysince, and took 23 years off of STYX, I am ready to start jamming them again man, DAMN they were good, 1 and 2 were their hardest. As a matter of fact I am buying equinox, Pieces of 8 and Pardise theatre tommorow.
@vntr2006 Yea I hung out with Dennis's cousin, now they were not like close, where she would call him everyday, but my girlfriend LOVED Tommy Shaw and was friends with Cindy, eventually Cindy got Dennis to talk Tommy into meeting Barb my girlfriend.I was broke up with her at the time. i FOUND CINDY ON TAGGED AND ARGED WITH HER IN A FEW DAYS. But she still loves Styx.
You got it! At least this company let me keep my video posted. A LOT of other song videos are being pulled for infringements. Long live Pieces of Eight! LOL!
A rock band that speaks of Queens, robots, and great Theaters come and gone. Styx. These guys were, and continue to be one of the greatest rock bands to ever grace our ears and hearts. Thanks so much to ScarlettEnvelope for inserting one of my favorite songs, and bands on the 'Tube. I wish you eternally well!
i love this song!!! there was something about this album on the radio last night and actually deyoung didnt like this album he thought he had done better even though this album sold 3million copies in 3 weeks!!
that would be awsome!! i think they should all get back together!!! they would sell like crazy stadiums would be filled!!!just if deyoung, shaw, chuck penazzo, and jy were to get back together ohh that would be great!!! and if they put out a new album holy shit!!!! that would be grea!! man they made some great music!!!music that would last FOREVER!!! this is REAL music!!!
That was on In The Studio with Redbeard, great show (Pieces, The Grand Illusion and Paradise Theatre were all spotlighted on the show). Dennis told Redbeard in 1991 that Po8 was his weakest moment of the A&M albums as a songwriter due to success pressure brought on by The Grand Illusion. He has played the title cut in recent solo shows and always loved this track (he played on several solo shows and was played on his last Styx tour in 1997).
This is the Styx sound from like 1971 to 1978 that was the progressive rock side. Then 79 to 84 the pop side. The early styx's reminds me of Yes.Too bad Deyoung had too much control cause of his antics is why he is not with the band anymore. His replacement is not as good as him.If continued this way that JY and Tommy wanted we would still be talking bout Styx today with Dennis Deyoung and there would be a new geration of Styx's fan out there.
He got sick and they threw him out. The band has gone way out there and lost me. On the bright side, Dennis DeYoung released his best solo album "100 years from now".
I hope the band can reunite someday. The golden sound is sorely missed.
Yah i know he got sick and all but do u think that his controling ways lead to his exile from Styx?I think it did cause the KIlroy album cause alot of friction in the band and thus why Tommy Shaw exited in 84.I mean yah Dennis is the voice but without him Styx is nothing.
Of course it did, but it's not like JY & Tommy didn't have chips on their shoulders as well. I think Styx is a classic example of what happens when 'Egos' collide.
I think the 2 members who had the right idea were Chuck & John. It was their band in the beginning. Somewhere along the line it became Dennis', then Tommy's, then JY's.
Safe in the scent of Jasmine. I could give you the last words, too.
