Oh dear, I can't even imagine what kind of humour I have laughed to before I found Marx brothers. They are without a doubt the best comedians ever existed.
I found it interesting to recently reading that the great actor Cary Grant always admired Zeppo Marx's comedy technique and used him it as his role model when he played comedy roles. This can especially be seen watching Cary Grant in the classic Bring Up Baby. Personally I like seeing Zeppo on screen simply because I find him to be very sexy, hot good looking man.
@friendofthediva3 I gotta agree with you about him being sexy and hot good looking man! I always thought that when I saw him. I love the other three but i think I love Zeppo more especially after reading groucho's bio!
The first clip is a recreation of the opening scene of their first Broadway show, “I’ll Say She Is.” Only in the original instead of imitating Maurice Chevalier, they did Gallagher and Shean. G&S was one of the greatest vaudeville comedy teams of all time. Al Shean was the Marx’ uncle who wrote some of their first comedy material. It was their way of saying thanks to Uncle Al.
The first scene is from the Paramount film "The House That Shadows Built". The agent is played by Ben Taggart, who was also the ship captain in "Monkey Business". The sketch is taken almost directly from the Marx Brothers play "I'll Say She Is" from 1924.
It is nice to know that somehow this one sequence from I SAY SHE IS, the first success on Broadway of the Four Marx Brothers, was preserved. But what is most curious is that the scene shows that the "Chevalier imitation" sequence was actually thought up first in that play, not in the film MONKEY BUSINESS, but that quip of Groucho pointing to Chico and arguing about restricting immigration.
@goback3spaces "this is not monkey business nor is it pineapples" is my favorite line. I think he gets a bad rap because he was the youngest and was professionally pushed around by his more domineering brothers.
@Veggieman87 - Agreed. As funny as Groucho, Chico and Harpo were, they functioned best when Zeppo was with them. After he left (with the exception of "A Night At the Opera"), they weren't quite as funny as before.
This was a screen test. I saw this at a tribute to Groucho Marx following his death. The tribute was held at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences building. This was 1977.
The guests included several of the Marx's writers and Groucho's best friend, George Burns.
@doucksmecano That's okay, nether is Chico's. (But yours is still better than at least half most American English Speaking youtube and Facebook users.)
Thanks for posting a comment for this video. The Goodman Theater in Chicago recently put ona live presntation of Animal Crackers. Unfortunately I did not get to see it. There's nobody out there today who can aompare to the marvelous madness of the Marx Brothers.
I saw it! it was fantastic!!! i mean the originals will always be the best, but i was laughing 200% of the time... I would watch the show again -- AKA i got all of their autographs
Zeppo <3
Gotta love the Marx Brothers.

Anyone notice that Zeppo's lines sound a bit like Goethe's FAUST? It's off of course, but close enough to be funny.

Zeppo was hideously underrated. He fits in perfectly with the absolute anarchy his brothers create.
