@scarz1951 i have just checked mine with a ruler and it is very close to being flat ground but you were right about it being convex, although the amount of sharpening i have done on it probably didn't help it. i had to clean off all of the rust after a trip to Scotland so that probably took out most of the curvature.
@n1ck3o7 Actually it was just a question rather than a correction. I'd like to have a flat ground Opie but don't want to reprofile the one I have. I'd really like to get my paws on one of the older flat ground Falkniven F1's. I like convex well enough but prefer either flat or Scandi ground blades. I've got a pal that lives in Lincolnshire. They are headed to Scotland tomorrow. I live in the US and the closest I've been to Scotland was the lake district. Beautiful country. The Opie perform well?
@scarz1951 yeah, i tend to work on a two knife system. opi for the more delicate tasks like carving or where a cut needs cleaning up; and a byrd for the heavier tasks like small splitting or hacking through bigger branches. but the opi hasn't failed me yet but the byrd has loads of play in the blade and all of the thread in the screw has been mangled. obviously carbon steel and Scotland don't mix well and it rusted up pretty quickly but that was easy to get rid of.
@n1ck3o7 Have you ever considered a blade made of sandvik (12C27) steel? Stainless but takes a very good edge and holds it well. It's almost as good, some say as good, as high carbon but without the rust and corrosion. I have a folder made with sandvik and it's a beauty. I'd never have baought it for myself, it was a gift, but the blade is not why I'd not have bought it. I don't like the way the knife is made. My spelling of sandvik is probably wrong.
@scarz1951 i have heard of carbon/stainless knifes but i haven't had a chance to get or test one out yet... especially as my knife budget is pretty low and my parents say i have enough knives. but from what i have heard these stainless carbon knifes are pretty good
@n1ck3o7 I guess they don't realize that one can never have enough knives. It sounds like yours do a good job for you and you apparantly know how to take care of them. A fixed 4" blade would take a lot of the work that Byrd does when you can afford one, IF you want one and if you can legally own one. Some countries are pretty tight regarding knives. I know the UK isn't real easy on knife owners. Here in Indiana I can legally carry an 18" openly on my belt. Others aren't so lucky.
@scarz1951 yeah, here the knife laws are ridiculous, and so are the gun laws. technically, my opi is illegal to carry ( more than 3 inches and locking ) ... unless i have a good reason to carry it like i am going hunting/fishing or i helping at a scout camp.and a recent mass shooting means that the liscence laws are going to be looked at meaning that it will be even harder to own a gun. which sucks...
Very nice mod bud..

The carbon steel on opinel should be very easy to sharpen (easier than a stainless), and take a sweet edge.
The carabiner is niteize (night eyes)

Where did you find a flat ground Opie? Mine and all the others I've seen are convex ground.
