Enjoyed "Page Eight", with the Billie Holiday/ Lester Young moment as one of several in the story invoking the power of love & art & courage against all odds.
Saw a ladies of jazz netflix movie containing one Lady Day song from this set. whoever owns the whole concert no doubt will cash in big, given the perfect performances of all the jazz musicians.
Gerry Mulligan IS featured here, 'cholo'...as well as Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham, Milt Hinton, Vic Dickenson, et. al.- this was an "all-star" session.
"The blues, to me, is like, being very sad, very sick...or in the church, being very happy. There's two kinds of blues: there's happy blues, and there's sad blues. I don't think I ever sing the same way twice. I don't think I ever sing the same tempo. One night, it's a little bit slow, the next night, it's a little bit brighter- it's according to how I feel. I don't know- the blues is sort of a mixed-up thing. You just have to feel it. Anything I do sing, it's part of my life."
Maybe she was born Eleanora Fagan Gough, maybe she took the name Billie Holiday after her admiration of a movie star - Billie Dove. Later on maybe nicknamed "Lady day" by Lester Young!
..and Lady Day gives him an answer..I like it so much...she just is a lady..lady..and she sufferd so
much intil she died in 1959..but in my heart she will live forever..because her makes me still ..makes me still....confessioned abouth the music..(I'm a little german boy of 45...)
The most magical thing about this specific version is that Billie and Lester were not on speaking terms at the time, but they put fourth one of their best performances. According to people that were in the room, Lester didn't look like he was even going to take a solo, until he stood up right before Billie went back into singing and played what we see in this clip. The Ken Burns documentary has more of this clip.
And the man was sick at the time! All the guys who took from, if not copied outright, his style and/or tone (Getz, Gonzalves, Grey etal.) tells you right there. Webster and Hawkins are true giants of the tenor, Mulligan the Bari., "little Jazz" the trumpet but Prez is, for my money, the greatest tenor player ever.

Actually (dumb ass) Mingus didn't write Goodbye Pork Pie Hat until AFTER Prez checked out. Which would make him riffing it here a little strange. I

Cool document. What a beautiful woman, what a stunning voice -- plus Lester Young at his peak. Can watch it over and over again.
More jazz in my profile, blog-wise. Feel free to drop by.
Cheers,
Brew

Lester Young is great, but he will never beat John Coltrane. Listen some of his!!!
Praguedive 2 years ago
completely unnecessary to compare them both. why is it a question of "beating" for you?
NiklasNydahl 2 years ago
Oh, my vocab. isn't that great. It's just an advice. But still, they both played tenor sax.

You just spoke a book Mac. That was Lester at his finest. Taking one note and playing it numerous ways and making it sound AWESOME!!!!!

It's a little over 50 years since seeing the Pres and Billie, live in Toronto. It doesn't get much better than the connection they had. Beautiful.
