Each species can speak to some extent :) Even crows can, although the Common Raven (Corvus corax) is the species which has one of the broadest capability of vocalization.
I fondly remember a raven that was at a small zoo, who was very affectionate and talkative. Sadly he died, and his replacement wasn't too friendly. But that was a few years ago, so maybe this one's more sociable now. I'll have to pay another visit now to find out.

Man: "Who's a good bird?" *long pause* Raven:" Huh? " Oh how many moments I have been like that. He is beautiful bird and hope to see a lot more like him.
@50CalPaintballSniper Ravens are scavengers so they will eat just about anything. We feed him rats, mice and left over table scraps like fish and chicken. Ravens are long lived birds. We got Julian before he was a year old so he will be a life time commitment for us.
@50CalPaintballSniper In the US it is illegal to "own" any wild bird. We have Julian because he is unreleasable due to his injuries. We are only allowed to do this because we have an educational permit that allows us to keep unreleasable birds for educational purposes only. We do not condone or encourage keeping any wild animals as "pets". There are non native hybrid ravens that can be purchased from breeders but you should check the laws in Canada first.
@1burdladee Surely you have felt the rightness of your relationship with this bird? How can you agree with the insane idea that having pets is wrong? I think all pets should be allowed lovers and the chance to run around, but if they keep coming back, they're pets.
@1burdladee yeah, im thinking of calling my local bird sanctuary do see if they have any that are not able to fly. Thanks for everything you have been great!
Thats amazing. Beautiful Raven you have there sir! i heard you have to surgically cut the tongue of the bird a bit to get it to mimic. not sure if its true or not but did you have to? or do Ravens have this ability naturally?
@GothicAfroman That was a practice done years ago thinking a bird would speak better with a cut tongue. It is extremely cruel and inhumane. Corvids(ravens, crows, bluejays etc.) are natural mimics. And yes we think Julian is beautiful too. Thanks for your interest.
I had know idea ravens could speak this clearly. I've heard them talking before but usually it sounds more like normal cawing and never like this. Wow. So awesome!
Is it possible to domesticate a breed of ravens? If so, why haven't there been a domesticated breed developed yet? I'd love to have one. I know the process is likely long and hard though. I remember reading of a Russian program attempting to domesticate foxes. They succeeded on a small scale, but lacked the funding to continue, which I think is a shame. Somehow the domestication process turned the typically orange/red fur to an interestingly silver/blue color. I hope their methods were ethical.
@PrayerWarrior4Him It is against the law to keep a Raven (or any other type of native bird) as a "pet". We are wildlife rehabilitators with a special purpose permit from the federal government to keep non-releasable birds for educational purposes only. We stress in our educational programs very strongly that no wild animal should be kept as a pet. It takes many hours of work and a lot of dedication to keep these birds as educational tools. Rehab and release is our main goal.
He actually speaks in both my voice as well as my wife's voice. Ravens are extremely intelligent and are great mimics. The vid is not fake we have much better things to do with our time. Thanks for the interest.
I think i's a mix of having no idea that ravens could do this combined with having the video play in the background. Without looking at the video it's quite difficult to distinguish who is saying what.
In that video he is only repeating "What's Up" in the beginning of the vid and then he says "Hello" very softly near the end. You can tell when he speaks when he kind of hunkers down and his wings come out . We have a few other vids of him posted if you want to check them out.
it´s amazing that a raven really sound like a human if he repeat a sentence....
