@karekora --- thanks, karekora! there is a quiz about the material in the film. it's a good listening test, and it can be modified to fit any age I've shown it to, from five year old to 15. Maybe I should post the quiz in case someone wants to make a similar quiz for their class.
Thanks! You don't need any fance school apparatus. You can show it on a PC or a TV or a projector. I have shown it on my laptop screen, even. Anything is better than nothing! :)
What a great way of introducing yourself to your students. I would love to do a similar thing but I'm not sure of my schools facilities. Anyway, thanks for posting your jikoshokai, it's awesome.
Thanks very much. There is only a small number of Jews permanently living in Japan. However, there are many Jewish JETs and other teachers. I think I said that Japan itself is the challenge. ;()
Thanks for your note. I did use photos pertaining to 9/11 in an earlier slide show version of my intro, but as someone who personally witnessed the towers fall I felt very, very uncomfortable using these images as a hook to get kids interested in me or English or the US. I had to ask myself why exactly I was talking about 9/11 and I did not have a good answer.
Thanks! I wonder if there are any vegetarian converts among the 700 or so students who have seen this. The smiling cow was definitely one of their favorite moments.
I think they did! But then again anything that is not studying is usually appreciated.... I am lucky that I can be the first person to ever challenge them to watch a film (albeit homemade and simple) mostly in English.
Thanks Bureikeisan, I've been here almost a year. I like it a lot. But it's just like any other part of life: it has ups and downs, but it's really fascinating. Not sure how long I am staying. I am nowhere near Tokyo! :)
Hey that was a great video,, kind of gives me some ideas,,, I am going to become an an ALT as well, but not with Jet. I am going for a Tesol. then just going to apply for Jobs.. How long have you been there? Do you like it, How long are you staying, are you in the Tokyo area?
At first I used laminated photos only. It's kind of lame b/c they're hard to see and not exciting, but it's better than nothing. Think of what they'd want to see. You can bring money (you can laminate or bag it and pass it around), Yankees baseball cards, whatever. Bring many things and pare it down after talking with teachers or other experienced people. A good 10 minute movie alone will go a LONG way, you don't need anything else. But MAKE sure the movie will play properly before class.
Thanks to you who have commented kindly. I have been in Japan since July, and I have found many great vegetarian foods. Most restaurants will prepare something if you explain (with the full details) what you do not eat.
If you are making a jiko shokai, prepare a long and a short b/c you won't know what you can use in any given class. Even if you can't make a movie you can make a computer slide show (iPhoto, etc.) and patch it into a TV (via S-Video cable) or a projector (ditto).
This is a nice Jiko Shokai! I am thinking about mine, because I am going to Japan in August! This is a good way to show where you are from. Do you play it with the recordings? Do you supplement this with anything else like hard materials? Photo albums or such? Very helpful! Thanks for posting this! ^_^
There are few vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Japan, but many vegetables and fruits are available especially now. I hope you establish your life in Japan very soon.

Great video! :) I wish I was a kid in your class...
Do you give a related activity to the students after watching this video?

You forgot to mention ground zero, even though it was a sad incident I still think it's worth mentioning.

Wow this is so good!
It's given me quite a few ideas of things to include in my jiko shokai - though putting it all together into a video is rather beyond me!
Your students must really enjoy watching this!

Thanks! That means a lot, coming from The Master. :) The students love the "down!" segment. I am not really sure why. That, and the smiling cow.
voggvogg 2 years ago
Well done Eric!
I could have done with one less "down"... LOL
All the clips and pics - your kids must have really enjoyed this!
