invisible places to go when you die obviously man made myths and this invisible ignorant god who refuses to show himself gets humans to write books for him its insane
@mcdinkity don't both theories seem a little insane? one celled organisms were created in a hostile environment by a mysterious source of energy that came out of nothing and over billions of years developed into complex, multi-celled organisms, and by pure chance, they all magically turned into a final stage, (humanity) through trial and error? nobody has the answer. you'll probably argue it because it scares you that you don't know how we got here but it's okay. go look up a rebuttal on Google.
@300daysandnights i dont know the answers but i know religions dont either they are made up by men if there is a god or some kind of creator he or it didnt start any religions and the afterlie is just wishful thinking
@mcdinkity also, if people need to believe in an afterlife to help them live their life, then so be it. if they need a scientific reason then it's okay. but sometimes we get a sense of superiority because we believe ours is the right way. but we're all human and we're all just trying to make sense of things.
@300daysandnights i dont think you have any idea how the big bang theory works or maybe even evolution?! you're oversimplifying some scientific theories and then goes on calling them ridiculous. it's just hard to take you serious then.
but yeah, for us humans to find a absolute definite answer on how everything "began" seems rather impossible, at least in my life time.
One thing's for sure--this song inspires in-depth discussions and a great deal of soul-searching with respect to the afterlife, or the lack thereof, depending on the path that both logic and emotion take you. The fact remains that the genius responsible for our intellectual and ephemeral "musings" created this masterpiece, among many, to be enjoyed as well as pondered. Matt's voice is beautiful and the guitar is scorching, as always!
@HoosierMomma Wow, I'm an atheist, and I was brought up into the Catholic religion, and for a while, I thought Catholics were all crazy. Ha, guess I'm wrong. I'm kind of glad I am. :D
personally, I think this is Matt seeing into the future at accidentally knocking up Kate Hudson... poor Matt... first Twilight, now this debacle... ah well...
This song is not hard to understand. It's about someone who has been an atheist their entire life on their death-bed and coming to terms with the fact that he/she has not believed in anything after death, and hence it "scares the hell" out of him/her, that there is nothing after death.
It isn't pro anything, it's just a really cool idea for a song.
@EvilMuzz actually is probably the reverse of it, and precisely "scares the .hell. -precisely this word and not other- out of me" is the way of saying: I'm not afraid to die
stop debating religion. i dont care how much time you put into your comment... no one converts religions because of a comment that they read on youtube so just stop. MUSE
Stop the religious debates. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but you don't need to say why yours is better. We don't truly know what will happen after death, so this argument can't be won.
@lalegende007 The alternative is to abandon debate, and give up caring about the truth. Is really desirable? Would politics benefit from this attitude? Would science? Would mathematics or philosophy? @lalegende007 What legal systems today are based on religion? Certainly not the ones in America, which are explicitly secular. Saudi Arabia springs to mind. Just to clarify when he says "it scares the hell out of me and the end is all i can see" he is not refering to hell as in the biblical term
He just means hes scared to die. Like if someone scares you, you say Fuck dude you scared the hell out of me. And just cause you say that doesn't mean you believe in hell you just got scared
Atheists don't believe in anything
And i certanily don't believe in hell regardless, im agnostic btw.
I'm pretty sure he's using 'hell' sarcasticly. Because he actually is really scared to die, but he's also using hell in an ironic sarcastic way because he knows that everyone else believes in hell and he's just going to die and there'll be nothing.
matt belamy's songs are incredible. the chord progressions are those similar to a classical piece of music (20th century) but eh way he makes them rock is so clever and that's why he's so wealthy
My favorite part is how he says "It scares the hell out of me" when an atheist wouldn't actually believe in hell. That is a very John Lennon style lyric.
I dont think anyone understands muse like i do atleast for this song.
yes atheists dont believe in hell, but hes not using hell as in the place hes using it as hes really scared shitless.
scares the hell out of him. hes afraid to die. the end is all he can see.
he doesn't want to face th facts, but his believes are that there is no god. And hes so scared to die, but he knows it will creep up on him at any moment....
I think there's a definite edge to the lyrics - but making a reference to the worlds of life and death colliding he could be evoking Hades or any other mythical place of death
in truth I think these are the "musings" of someone with a deep spiritual commitment to his art and is trying to define himself without the restrictions that come along with institutionalized belief
@Layna8 No it's not. It's not Pro Christian nor is it Pro Atheist. Bellamy states, "I believe in the God of the universe, definitely." In addition, he revealed in a 2007 video inverview that, "I don't believe in heaven or hell, I don't really believe in that version"
No, no, no,no, nooo! Zeppelin or Beatles or the Floyd, maybe, but not Muse..... they are a drop in a sea of modern bands that will never compare... and I'm sorry, but I have a hard (literally) time putting my penis away ; )
offensive to athiest he just asking a question rumoured to be an athiest himself matt just want to know what happen when we die if we already no heaven isnt real or hell
I met Jesus once; he was a man of many occupations - a cook, a landscaper, and a construction worker. Yeah, Jesus Sanchez was his name.... Never underestimate the usefullness and willingness of your hispanic brothers.
Maybe I have been wrong this whole time... but you would be surprised at the number of people that have argued with me that this song is pro-christian
By the way, all of the comments below are in response to comments made by "Multiblaze," who was offended by my comments that defend atheism as an alternitive (good ones, I might add) to the unscientific belief in the allmighty flying spaghetti monster (whoops, I mean god)*.
*if you not get that last comment, it is because you do not have faith in the flying spaghetti monster, who is my savior, and I truely believe exists. I (symbolically) eat his broken body every Sunday.
How can "Are we missing how amazing Muse sounds live" be completally irrelevant? Douchebag, the band never tries to "offend" anyone an neither do their songs, if you find however it does then that's YOUR problem an you need to get over it. An the song doesn't insinuate it's about atheism, its about the toughts of a dying atheist AS THE TITLE INSINUATES!
Well, I would assume that if something has the word "atheism" in the title, it does in fact insinuate atheism, my fellow douchebag. Favorite bands are like assholes; everybody's got one. Maybe your's is Muse; I have a few (not assholes, but favorite bands.) Am I a douchebag because I do not believe in Muse, or God? Well, in that respect I am a double douchebag, and shall hang my head in shame for about 0 seconds.
That wasn't what i was implying, you can't break down what something or someone says to 1 single word. Atheism is used in the title yes, but the meaning behind it "Thoughts of a dying" states implies what the song is actually about an means. Unlike what you were insinuating to the statement "Are we missing how amazing Muse sounds live". An this "Favorite bands are like assholes; everybody's got one.
Maybe your's is Muse; I have a few (not assholes, but favorite bands.) Am I a douchebag because I do not believe in Muse, or God? Well, in that respect I am a double douchebag, and shall hang my head in shame for about 0 seconds. " has nothing to do what i said and is actually irrelevant. An the word "Atheism" isn't in the title.
I would have to say that the words I say are not agressive. I am being outspoken, as that is my personality. I am merely throwing my opinion and the logic used to form those opinions. I do not force it, only hope to bring something to people's attention, for them to digest it however they like. And we all know about how world piece was achieved by the biggest christian - George W Bush. ; )
Also, your analogy about hot/cold, dark/light, etc., is not a valid one. Yes, in fact, hot is presence of heat energy, cold is a lack of heat energy, and so forth and so on. However, this can be quantifiably and objectively measure with a thermometer. There is no God-o-meter, nor is good or evil an intangible force - there are just people that do good things and people that do bad things, and everything in between.
And also, having "faith" in a theory is just as silly as having faith that an intangible "being" actually exists. Scientist don't have "faith" in theories, they either think that the are plausible/possible, or they do not. And besides that, if you were a true christian, you not say that you have a "theory" and base your belief in god on that theory; you would be like the rest and say that god is a truth, backed up not by imperical evidence, but on "faith" and an old (falsely) translated book.
Also, anybody with a curious or questioning mind (ooh, how sinful!) should read the book by Richard Dawkins called "The God Delusion." I think anyone who thinks that Darwinian evolution (natural selection) is false, should learn about it before they reject it. Also, watch a movie by Bill Maher called "Religulous," were he shows (truthfully) how next to oil, religion is the biggest cause of all wars, ancient and current. The crusades were a bloodbath, led by Martin Luther, in the name of god.
You have got to be kidding me. What part of anything I have said makes me selfish? Or greedy? And besides that, our founding fathers (ie, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin) were against religion and its connection with government (look it up). Their idea of the American dream was for people to be free thinkers and not be held back as a society by religion. And I have pride and dignity. You are a fool to think that people are nothing without religion. (continued)
Some people think that to have no religion is to have nothing to look foward to, to have no joy, to see no wonder. But I am amazed everytime I look up at the stars and think, wow, look at all of the vastness and variation in our universe, just as Charles Darwin saw life on the galopagos islands. You can sit there and ponder, why did God create such a mess of stars, so vast and so diverse, why did he pick of all places this particular planet to start humankind?
Why is it that people think that athiests live a dull hollow life void of any joy or wonderment? I am in awe everytime I look at the sky and see vastness that is our universe, one that is so random and complicated, that you have to ask yourself, who thought to design it this way? You could ponder that question, or you could say, maybe nobody did. So many try to poo poo the theory of evolution, but how could you use the scientific method to prove god's existence? You cannot.
My grandfather was a preacher at the Church of Christ, as well as my great grandfather. I know remember a lot of the stories in the bible, along with there physical impossibilities, and even at a young age, was very skeptical - and with good reason. Some of the conflicts I saw:
-Where are dinosaurs in the bilbe?
-How is it that the earth is only 4,000 years old?
I really do no have a problem with people having religion, but if somebody wants to take a stab at athiests (such as the way this song does), I feel it is my duty to stab back. I have lots of christian friends, and though we have different views on life, we get along just fine, so long as they don't force thier view. I believe people have the right to have religion or not have religion. But I also believe that church and state should be completly separate, as our founding fathers wanted it.
Matt Bellamy: "Being an atheist means you have to realise that when you die, that really is it. You've got to make the most of what you've got here and spread as much influence as you can. I believe that you only live through the influence that you spread, whether that means having a kid or making music".
So true. I have two sons, and have played guitar for 16 years, and drums for 10. Even my four-year-old plays drums & guitar. These are the things that bring me joy.
Its about an athiest who is dying and starts to have regrets about not believing in god, or that there is no "life" after death for him. I guess christians (or other theists) think that athiests are afraid of death, that there is nothing to look foward to. I say live your live to its fullest, so in the end you can look back and say, "I had fun, I loved, I lived." Athiests can die with dignity. Theists live there lives enslaved by the "laws" of there religion in order to gain divine entry.
@ThyJimster I'm going to have to disagree with you on the meaning of the song. There is no point where he sings about regret. You may not be afriad of death but I know the first time I realy thought about it I scared myself more than I've ever been. I know of other athiests who at first become scared whe they think about it too. Over time though I have come to accept the fact and realise that life after death will be the same as before I was alive, which is nothing. And in no way am i depressed
@infernex14 100% agree, Im 16, athiest and recently began to think about life and what happens when we die, but when you realise that before you were born is the same as dying, it isnt so bad.
@infernex14 100% agree, Im 16, athiest and recently began to think about life and what happens when we die, but when you realise that before you were born is the same as dying, it isnt so bad.
@infernex14 Dude there is no hope in that theory... I love the fact that when i die someday ill be in heaven with Jesus. You might as well choose Jesus. What if you choose athieism and then die just to discover God is real??? Its your choice and im not looking for a argument... i just want you to know theres more to life than just death and nothingness.
@leviheard321 I would much rather fear death than create a false mindset of my existance just becasue there is a chance that I am wrong. I guess maybe I am just one of the few ppl today who refuse to follow something blindly becasue of fearing the concequences that I am threatened with not believing. Personally there is no way I can believe in heaven becasue it makes absolutely no sence to me logicaly. I just want you to know that its only when you having nothing that you are free to do anything
You have your beliefs we have ours. Its that simple. Its not taking the "leap of faith", its realizing it. And maybe in your near death experience (hopefully non will come) that you realize your faith. There are no laws in achieving christianity, only a mortal privilage of belief. good day
I DO NOT have faith in anything that cannot be scientifically proven - faith and science don't mix. Belief is not a privilage - nor is it knowlege. You can believe in something based on faith, but that does not say that it is real. I simply will not substitute a lack of knowlege of facts or provable truths with "faith." Christians always play the faith card, and in my opinion, its just a cop out.
Think for yourselves, people. Don't follow like a bunch of lame sheep. Religion causes war, and narrowmindedness. BTW, this is the lamest song I have ever heard.
People who think to much of themselves cause war. If everyone would realize the true design of god, then maybe we would have peace. but again, we have our beliefs and u have yours. respected
That's just it - every religion has its version of the design of God (or gods). Who is to say that christians are more right than hindus, whose religion began thousands of years before christianity? The question still remains, who designed the designer(s)?
Also, the almighty christian god is said to be all knowing, all good, and all powerful. So if he knows something bad is going to happen, and he's a good guy and has all the power in the world to stop it, why doesn't he? Oh, I forgot, he gave man free wil, and favors America, and whatever football player points up to him after a touchdown (god has favorites, you know.) Shouldn't god be pretty pissed off at us for poluting his earth and killing each other, whether in war or peace?
I shall write a song, "Thoughts of dying person who wasted there life believing in something (God, Gods, santa, etc.) that does not exist." I am an athiest, and when I die, I will not be scared and go, "Oh crap! I better start believing or I'm going to hell!" My mind will cease to have thoughts (a physical result of death), and it will be just like before I was born - nothing
The song is exactly what the title says. Its somebody who doesnt believe in god not knowing what happens after death. Its a pretty deep song. Makes you question. Thats why I like Muse so much. They are a Dark yet truthful band.
gracias

I'm pretty sure he's using 'hell' sarcasticly. Because he actually is really scared to die, but he's also using hell in an ironic sarcastic way because he knows that everyone else believes in hell and he's just going to die and there'll be nothing.

matt belamy's songs are incredible. the chord progressions are those similar to a classical piece of music (20th century) but eh way he makes them rock is so clever and that's why he's so wealthy

@Bendypipes
The progression sounds more like baroque era, actually. It reminds me of one of Bach's preludes.

Looking at all of Muse's songs, this one is strangely up there as one of the most crazily beautiful.
And I love how every video for this song has big debates going on as to what it's about.
Leeko23Arsenal 1 year ago
whats its about? LOL its about a dying atheist the title says it all lol
ValnnB 1 year ago
Haha, well that much is obvious! Most of the arguments seem to be about heaven and hell and religion and Matt's religion.
If I had to guess Dom's religion I'd say Spidermanist.

fuck it to whatever the meaning of this song is. just listen to it,there's no need to talk about 'atheist'.
Rockerheads 1 year ago
am I the only one who sees humour in this?
I think there's a definite edge to the lyrics - but making a reference to the worlds of life and death colliding he could be evoking Hades or any other mythical place of death
in truth I think these are the "musings" of someone with a deep spiritual commitment to his art and is trying to define himself without the restrictions that come along with institutionalized belief

How can "Are we missing how amazing Muse sounds live" be completally irrelevant? Douchebag, the band never tries to "offend" anyone an neither do their songs, if you find however it does then that's YOUR problem an you need to get over it. An the song doesn't insinuate it's about atheism, its about the toughts of a dying atheist AS THE TITLE INSINUATES!
clangersrule 1 year ago
Well, I would assume that if something has the word "atheism" in the title, it does in fact insinuate atheism, my fellow douchebag. Favorite bands are like assholes; everybody's got one. Maybe your's is Muse; I have a few (not assholes, but favorite bands.) Am I a douchebag because I do not believe in Muse, or God? Well, in that respect I am a double douchebag, and shall hang my head in shame for about 0 seconds.
ThyJimster 1 year ago
That wasn't what i was implying, you can't break down what something or someone says to 1 single word. Atheism is used in the title yes, but the meaning behind it "Thoughts of a dying" states implies what the song is actually about an means. Unlike what you were insinuating to the statement "Are we missing how amazing Muse sounds live". An this "Favorite bands are like assholes; everybody's got one.

I would have to say that the words I say are not agressive. I am being outspoken, as that is my personality. I am merely throwing my opinion and the logic used to form those opinions. I do not force it, only hope to bring something to people's attention, for them to digest it however they like. And we all know about how world piece was achieved by the biggest christian - George W Bush. ; )
ThyJimster 2 years ago
Also, your analogy about hot/cold, dark/light, etc., is not a valid one. Yes, in fact, hot is presence of heat energy, cold is a lack of heat energy, and so forth and so on. However, this can be quantifiably and objectively measure with a thermometer. There is no God-o-meter, nor is good or evil an intangible force - there are just people that do good things and people that do bad things, and everything in between.
ThyJimster 2 years ago
And also, having "faith" in a theory is just as silly as having faith that an intangible "being" actually exists. Scientist don't have "faith" in theories, they either think that the are plausible/possible, or they do not. And besides that, if you were a true christian, you not say that you have a "theory" and base your belief in god on that theory; you would be like the rest and say that god is a truth, backed up not by imperical evidence, but on "faith" and an old (falsely) translated book.
ThyJimster 2 years ago

(continued)
ThyJimster 2 years ago
Some people think that to have no religion is to have nothing to look foward to, to have no joy, to see no wonder. But I am amazed everytime I look up at the stars and think, wow, look at all of the vastness and variation in our universe, just as Charles Darwin saw life on the galopagos islands. You can sit there and ponder, why did God create such a mess of stars, so vast and so diverse, why did he pick of all places this particular planet to start humankind?
ThyJimster 2 years ago

-How does one walk on water?
-How does one turn a staff into a serpent?
-How did two of every animal fit on the ark?
ThyJimster 2 years ago
I really do no have a problem with people having religion, but if somebody wants to take a stab at athiests (such as the way this song does), I feel it is my duty to stab back. I have lots of christian friends, and though we have different views on life, we get along just fine, so long as they don't force thier view. I believe people have the right to have religion or not have religion. But I also believe that church and state should be completly separate, as our founding fathers wanted it.

Matt Bellamy: "Being an atheist means you have to realise that when you die, that really is it. You've got to make the most of what you've got here and spread as much influence as you can. I believe that you only live through the influence that you spread, whether that means having a kid or making music".

whats the song about??
blissmeout 2 years ago
Its about an athiest who is dying and starts to have regrets about not believing in god, or that there is no "life" after death for him. I guess christians (or other theists) think that athiests are afraid of death, that there is nothing to look foward to. I say live your live to its fullest, so in the end you can look back and say, "I had fun, I loved, I lived." Athiests can die with dignity. Theists live there lives enslaved by the "laws" of there religion in order to gain divine entry.
ThyJimster 2 years ago
@ThyJimster I'm going to have to disagree with you on the meaning of the song. There is no point where he sings about regret. You may not be afriad of death but I know the first time I realy thought about it I scared myself more than I've ever been. I know of other athiests who at first become scared whe they think about it too. Over time though I have come to accept the fact and realise that life after death will be the same as before I was alive, which is nothing. And in no way am i depressed

@infernex14 Dude there is no hope in that theory... I love the fact that when i die someday ill be in heaven with Jesus. You might as well choose Jesus. What if you choose athieism and then die just to discover God is real??? Its your choice and im not looking for a argument... i just want you to know theres more to life than just death and nothingness.
leviheard321 1 year ago
@leviheard321 I would much rather fear death than create a false mindset of my existance just becasue there is a chance that I am wrong. I guess maybe I am just one of the few ppl today who refuse to follow something blindly becasue of fearing the concequences that I am threatened with not believing. Personally there is no way I can believe in heaven becasue it makes absolutely no sence to me logicaly. I just want you to know that its only when you having nothing that you are free to do anything
infernex14 1 year ago 4
@leviheard321 i think its wrong of you to try and force religion or tell someone what they should choose and believe in.
i mean, there is not any proof for anything, left people believe in what they want to.
plus, who even cares. the song is too amazing to be discussing religion!

I apologize for not making that "leap of faith" as most christians make. But, who designed the designer? Ever think of that?
ThyJimster 2 years ago
You have your beliefs we have ours. Its that simple. Its not taking the "leap of faith", its realizing it. And maybe in your near death experience (hopefully non will come) that you realize your faith. There are no laws in achieving christianity, only a mortal privilage of belief. good day
jobz199 2 years ago
I DO NOT have faith in anything that cannot be scientifically proven - faith and science don't mix. Belief is not a privilage - nor is it knowlege. You can believe in something based on faith, but that does not say that it is real. I simply will not substitute a lack of knowlege of facts or provable truths with "faith." Christians always play the faith card, and in my opinion, its just a cop out.

Think for yourselves, people. Don't follow like a bunch of lame sheep. Religion causes war, and narrowmindedness. BTW, this is the lamest song I have ever heard.
ThyJimster 2 years ago
People who think to much of themselves cause war. If everyone would realize the true design of god, then maybe we would have peace. but again, we have our beliefs and u have yours. respected
jobz199 2 years ago
That's just it - every religion has its version of the design of God (or gods). Who is to say that christians are more right than hindus, whose religion began thousands of years before christianity? The question still remains, who designed the designer(s)?
ThyJimster 2 years ago
Also, the almighty christian god is said to be all knowing, all good, and all powerful. So if he knows something bad is going to happen, and he's a good guy and has all the power in the world to stop it, why doesn't he? Oh, I forgot, he gave man free wil, and favors America, and whatever football player points up to him after a touchdown (god has favorites, you know.) Shouldn't god be pretty pissed off at us for poluting his earth and killing each other, whether in war or peace?
ThyJimster 2 years ago
I shall write a song, "Thoughts of dying person who wasted there life believing in something (God, Gods, santa, etc.) that does not exist." I am an athiest, and when I die, I will not be scared and go, "Oh crap! I better start believing or I'm going to hell!" My mind will cease to have thoughts (a physical result of death), and it will be just like before I was born - nothing
