Stunning performance of a moving song. Am I the only one, though, who hears "Won't you please excuse my fingers, but it's not my cup of tea" in this particular version?
On the original version, the "choir" was just a bunch of assembled session singers including Madeline Bell and Lesley Duncan (the latter of whom collaborated with Elton on "Love Song" off "Tumbleweed Connection").
@grantmacdonald1 its not the bibles fault. its the people who take it too seriously and hate other people. they dont promote hate they teach a religion. dont blame the bible blame the people who are wrong.
I have always wondered what the orchestra and choir players think of doing stuff like this. I would think they would like the change from the classical stuff, but you wonder if they think it simplistic. Still, this is one incredible performance. Wish I were there.
I agree that after the 80's, there are inflections that he can no longer perform due to age and other factors, but I think for someone who's 62 now I believe he still has a remarkable voice
@seanevanmusic , its the soul in his voice brother!, all the soul hes ever put into any of his work, im just glad he is still around and still doing his thing !"hes my brother, let us live in peace!"
This one of the top 10 of my 100 or so favorites of Eltons, Bernie Turpins? or purhaps his new writer who's name eludes me...Well anyway, It's one of the many favorite artist's works! I hope YouTube allows me to build a massive list of "Favorite's" I've got quite a library between my ear's and up. Thank's for suggesting this one for me.
His voice is shot. It has clearly dropped an octave of more since his classic period. If this is one of the best voices in the world, there is hope for me.
@GeminiSpaceship Whilst it is a much less clean voice than it used to be it's actually surprisingly very close to the original pitch. I've heard him sing as high as a Bb above middle C in the last few years (in levon). But yes, the falsetto is definately nothing compared to what it used to be.
@dennello I'm by no means saying he's not an amazing performer. I just saw him in concert a couple of weeks ago! However, there is no denying that his voice has truly transformed into a more powerful, slightly deeper tone.
I've seen him play this song live. He plays it with lots of energy...esp when he kicks into "I'm going back to the border..." AWESOME song. If my memory serves, he opened the 1999 Baltimore concert with this song.
What a tremendously underrated song...if only he did this more at his live concerts. I have been to four now and I am still waiting to hear him sing it! A Truly, beautiful song!
I was on the 5th row at that concert. This song was the hi-light of the evening for me. When the choir joined in for the 1st it was like nothing I have ever heard before. No CD or video can give it justice. Boy, you had to be there!
I didn't say that last comment!!! I was on a public computer and forgot to log out. I love Elton and had the great fortune to meet him when he came to Belfast. He is incredible. A true example of a living legend.

It's amazing how so musicians as they age their voices don't turn out so good, but his voice today works just as well.
