  • I liked the part how he felt used after the girl asked how he was doing at the store.

  • @SirChocolateHobo always happens to me

  • Twenty five people are inconvenienced at great expense.

  • THE PIPE IS LEAKING

  • "Hey Bill!"

    "How's up?"

    "Thanks."

    Weh."

  • 4:55 You can at least get your body cremated, turned into fireworks and played to music for around $4000

  • This is one of the greatest pieces of film I've ever seen. Glad to see it's been posted on YouTube.

  • The line that I took from this film to have the most profound importance is: "but realistically, this was his life" @ 2:34

Tell yourself, repeatedly, "This IS my life."

  • I think we are all Bill, but at the same time he is none of us.

  • i want to die. in a good way.

  • I saw the entire Trilogy this past Saturday and cannot wait for it to come out on DVD so I can force all my friends to watch it. Awesome!

  • What is that beutiful piece at 11:20?

  • I just saw "It's Such a Beautiful Day" and it was absolutely fucking awesome and wonderful

  • @DilbertHernandez i want to see it so bad

  • it is some sort of mind programming, very demonically inspired, let us be careful, i stopped in the middle of my "sublimity and entertainment" and noticed something is fishy in here, there are plenty of subliminal programming in the audio too, DO NOT BE PROGRAMMED!!! i am just concerned, please do not hate me

  • Don Hertzfeldt sounds like Vincent Law from Ergo Proxy.

  • i love his work because its so random

  • Anyone else see some potential parallels between this and Fight Club? That was my first thought.

  • I want this played at my funeral.

"Sometimes it was funny, sometimes sad, often scary, but mostly you don't really understand what the hell's going on. By the time it wraps up, you're kind of glad. Life's like that. Hopefully, you can enjoy it while it's going on. Try sharing it with a friend, that seems to help."

  • Liked this a lot...sad to say my life was a LOT like this....even read a letter from futureme.org that I sent to myself 5 yrs ago.....one of the last things that was said to me when things were going so wrong for me was my wife saying "it will be ok"

5 yrs later I am ok... and getting better everyday....thank you my love for 32 years of your love....its good to be whole again :-)

  • What is the absolutely BEAUTIFUL song that starts playing at 15:25?

I've looked at the songs in the credits, I couldn't seem to find it in any version I heard.

And by the way this is my faveourite short film ever.

    You are a huge inspiration.

  • @trofdugweed

Smetana - Die Moldau (roughly the last 30 seconds).

Does anyone know the name of the opera piece?

  • @trofdugweed That is the ending to The Moldau (Vltava) - Symphonic Poem No. 2 from "My Fatherland (Ma Vlast)"

  • I linked to this elsewhere online, and someone commented that they didn't believe that movies or videos could be art until they saw this, and it changed their entire view. I think that's a good indicator of how powerful this film is.

  • what is the music at 4:30 please??

  • It's focusing too much on the routine. It's a nice little sociology experiment on what would happen if one were to abandon the "blase attitude" that Georg Simmel wrote about, and to focus on every small interaction in one's day. You'd grow tired, then exhausted, and finally you'd just go crazy focusing on every little thing...

It's also an interesting question that delves into philosophy: "What is life?" Is it the stuff we do everyday, or when we BREAK from the everyday?

    Interesting stuff...

  • Why don't you come over here and sit on my lap?

  • Watching this, I can horrifically relate. It's upsetting, but eye opening.

Although the humour helps sweeten it just right :]

  • The Pipe is leaking.

  • the next day bill awoke and flew to the bus stop xDDDD

  • Why wont bill take his hat off???

  • what

  • best youtube video ever

  • sometimes i watch this just to get pumped up about life.

  • The last scene with him in the bus always gives me goosebumps.

  • thank you, don

for sharing such a personal story

  • this is the happening. omg

    thankyou

  • what is the music around 15:37 ? i would LOVE to know.

  • @artylu Pause at 16:43. Check those.

  • @artylu it is a segment from "Vitava" by Friedrich Smetana.

  • Really melancholy.

  • Ahhh, skitzophrenia... how beautiful

  • @nickHCgaming Schizophrenia* :)

  • <33

  • I maintain that this is the best piece of animation I've come across. It's got something for everybody. Humor, chaos, artistic merit, dramatic depth, spectacular soundtrack, and no matter who you are, you care about what happens to this guy. [O o]

  • @stevwillz311

Can't agree more. I recommend viewing I'm so proud of you if you haven't seen already.

The emotional value carried out in this is staggering. Relatively short film/series but I never felt like this for any character. Hope Bill have the closest thing to a happy ending. =(

  • I had to wear headphones. I JUST HAD TO.

  • weh.

  • Gigantic disease ridden crotches buried in all the Goshdarn produce

  • I love Smetanas "The Moldau" - recognized it immediately at 0:04 xD

  • its quite surprising that some parts of the music in everything will be ok its very similar to the one of the tree of life ....jmm maybe Alexandre desplat can explain?

  • The start to 0:50. That is 60% of the social interaction I have.

  • pretty nihilistic video

  • Is it the illness? or is it the constantly attentive perception of his life and the world around him, and the nagging feeling that life is a horribly strange, dehumanizing, isolating, and pointless experience that brought about psychosis in Bill.

I think Bill thought too much about his life and routine, and experienced anxiety and psychosis over the absurdity of life. Footage of a man's face bleeding played over and over on tv, a manatee watching you while you sleep. insanity in every day life.

  • @TrippyMcgee22 It's possible that Bill is the sane one, and those who don't notice the manatee watching them are horribly inattentive or in denial. You raise an excellent point, though.

  • @TrippyMcgee22 old age...old age is insanity, old age is psychosis, death is those things too...

And we're all bound to it....good luck !

  • I will be watching this a number of times again to try to understand what all this video is saying... o.o

  • fuck me in the ass this shit is so fucking profound.... sooo humanizing

  • @zhxiate I thought it was dehumanizing

  • this makes me laugh my fucking ass off

  • Art

  • That was so beautiful.

  • The way I interpreted this film, Bill most likely has a brain tumor, or some other form of disease that affects your perception of reality (yes I know that a brain tumor doesn't necessarily mean your perception of reality is messed up). Or is he just insane?

  • UPDATE: it got a bit better. Still rather scary-I might be sad, but I'm not that sad!

  • 11:34 and this is getting really dark. Is everything going to be OK? I'm getting worried now :( .

  • THIS is art.

  • It's nice to know you aren't alone.

  • What the Futch?

  • i find that it really is completely normal to have a break-down at times in a sick and twisted world.

it's called being human and feeling...

  • WOW... Total mind-blowing experience... That was weird....

  • Lately my anxiety has been getting to me and I've been feeling... I don't know. Terrible to say the least.

I feel like video talks about everything I think about, even if it is so indirect in its relations to my thoughts.

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and it does help.

  • @CRAZHEART014 Same here. I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder, if you haven't seen a psychologist and you're really concerned, I would do so right away.

  • Hey, this was a great film! I'm looking forward to buying it.

  • The first two minutes of this video had me in tears from laughter.

The middle part of this video had me in tears of confusion, with a mixture of laughter and concern.

The last part of this video had me in tears of sadness and compassion.

Then I watched the first two minutes again and cried from laughter.

  • This is a kind of holy book to me.

  • I just watched part 3 of this, it's such a beautiful day... tears.

  • If you transcribe the audio at the end in the bus when only music is playing. It says Leon deserves gardens. Let me know...

    What does it mean?

  • @pri0n I don't understand how you mean. Tell me more.

  • There are parts in my life, were i feel a sense of self pity, but then i feel terrible for feeling self pity for my decent middle class self while many others are in real trouble, then i go back and forth between the two feelings, after a while i take a shower and then i think "am i depressed" i eventually come to the conclusion that im not depressed but just "really sad for a moment" but then i remember a bunch of movies saying "the first stage of depression is denial", then i go on you tube

  • this made me... sad, yet very happy too

  • lil' fat kid with a deformed foot? DONT TALK ABOUT ME LIKE THAT!

  • What song is at 1:55 ish?

  • @EnvyAbomination: Au Fond du Temple Saint

  • This is quite easily the most depressing thing I've ever seen. It's also one of the most beautiful depictions of deep-seated despair I've ever seen.

  • it makes more since when your stoned

  • Last night I dreamed that all my toes fell off.

  • HOW'S UP!

  • It was funny. Then it was sad. Then I wanted to die. Then it was strange.

  • weh.

  • Damn, this made me depressed... yet it's still the greatest movie i've ever seen. I think a lot of people can relate to Bill.

  • i dont remember smoking anything

  • What are the songs played in this?

  • I find this amazing, but deeply disturbing, confusing, and very depressing at the same time. It somehow seems so different from the first time I watched it years ago. This will be on my mind for at least the next couple days. Wow.

  • 20 people will never be ok.

  • Oh my christ yes

  • This is the greatest cartoon I've ever seen.

  • So brilliant and yet so simple、presented with an extraordinary sense of humour. Simply incredible!

  • 20 people have perfect lives and don't have any kind of mental issue. Congrats!

  • The last minute of Bill riding on the bus with the music playing is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in an animated feature.

  • This is very cerebral. Yet fucking amazing

  • This is amazing.

  • The Pipe is leaking XD

  • Don = genius. Dude should get way more props.

  • I love this, so much.

  • Thats the sickest shit ive ever seen on youtube,

  • splendid!

  • Buried In All The Goddamn Produce!!

  • @cardsharkmaster that part makes me itch

  • I love the use of classical music you use in your movies ^_^ this is very beautiful can't wait to see the third one =D

  • beautiful

I love the bit when he gets the bad news from the doctor. the animation of him taking off his hat and rubbing his head is so touching.

ah I love it all! Respect!

  • I want to understand, but I just can't. That doesn't mean I'm going to quit trying toi

  • um....i think i understand now...

  • the narration is so poetic.

  • She didn't answer... Bill felt used... xD

  • 80,000 views. only 80,000 views in 8 months. why must i live in a world where a video like this gets only 80,000 views but a certain other video starring a certain "musician" can get 640,000,000?

  • @myco578 Rather have 80,000 people that are beautiful then 640,000,000 people who arn't. :)

  • Bill went home and masterbated for 7 hours....WHAT?!!?!?!? LOL

  • This film breaks my heart. What he sees and thinks is beautifull but awfully scary.

To loose the capacity to control ones thought but in exchange see a new exciting world? Is it worth it?

My perspective is he just grew too bored of the real world, and his mind helped him. But it couldn't stop just at making it entretaining, it multiplied all his feelings and fears. That's why he breaks.

What hurts me the most, is that I can't remember his name. And he probably wouldn't give importance to that.

  • rum is gewd

  • Yum

  • thumbs up for cold sours

  • In order to understand this video, you must be at least a little sad. A little WARNING: If you are sad, this vid will become as addictive as hell. Here I am for the 50th time...

  • @elchulotube that's EXACTLY how I feel about it :/

  • @elchulotube

Dude, holy shit, I know, I've watched it so many times... It's almost comforting for a socially awkward person like myself hahahah

  • @slit555 omg, yes. I know what you mean. It's isolated, lonely people bliss :D

  • @elchulotube I didn't quite understand why I loved this film so much. Thank you.

  • that voice is so easy to listen to, this is very calming to watch even though it gets crazy :P

  • i think this video was ment to fuck with your brain.... i feel so weird. im not joking. this video is like the video on grudge i think im going to die...

  • You, mr. Hertzfelt, are a genius! A pure, unadulturated, fucking, genius!

  • Don has been documenting most of my life, it seems...

  • To everyone who wants to know what the amazing song is from 15:20 onwards, I found it. I think.

You will find what you are looking for in Rheingold, by Wagner, specifically the Prelude.

Excerpts were also used by James Horner for the score for the Terrence Mallick film The New World.

  • @MikeH1986MikeH It's actually Má Vlast Moldau by Bedřich Smetana.

  • @Obnosim Thank you. It sounds like he looped it a few times?

  • I think that the theme is that you will go through joys and tragedies and after the events it will be just ok. you may disturb everyone else's life but everything will go back to normal, just as their life will.

  • That was probably the best movie i have ever seen. there is a lot to think about now.

  • I'm so ripped. I think i discovered two new universes.

  • Absolutely amazing cartoon, really moving. Cheers to you, Mr. Hertzfeldt. And I thought you only did violent, funny cartoons...

  • This is probably the greatest film ever made ever

  • This is really great, thank you. I remember a (really long) animated gif from like 15+ years ago of a typist getting overwhelmed and then bashing their brains out on the keyboard. I was a teacher sharing it with students to encourage them to make their first animated gifs. Are you the same artist? Some sketches look the same. Well, that character really blessed me and my students--and this very much also. You are very talented and give a lot. I look forward to your new film. Thank you.

  • Beautiful.

  • This could almost be a Stanely Kubrick film.

  • wow

  • have dealt with (at times) crippling depression my entire life.

this is one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen.

thank you, sincerely. this meant a lot to me.

  • whats the music entitled at the end of the film? thanks!

  • @DoubleLuckyJacket yeah what is the name of the song at the end of this film, I wish they would have posted the name becasue its really quite lovely

  • does anyone want to tell me what the message of this animation is??

  • @MrWassapp123 Its about the side effects of medication

  • "They all had gigantic bacteria-ridden crotches buried in all the goddamn produce." This film is an excellent depiction of Bill's descent into madness, though it requires a certain frame of mind to truly understand.

  • holy shit did Stanley Kubrick direct this?

  • ....Amazing.

  • *brain pops*

  • This is the best cartoon I have ever seen mostly because It's good but also because of the stark contrast between this and say the animation show. It's beautiful and I could never come up with something so meaningful and yet so funny.

  • Wow.

  • The part about Bill's mom trying to cut off the string and what she said after bill swatted her away made me so sad x.x

  • I cried. ;_;

  • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Shut up and watch the video

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

  • this was beautiful.

  • can someone please explain to me what I just watched?

  • this almost made me cry o3o,

  • Wow this is pretty much a documentary about my life.

  • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

  • i don't understand this.. but its beautiful

  • This is beautiful.

  • Schizophrenia perfectly imaged by Don Hertzfeldt.

  • this is just amazing.

  • And Everything Was Ok.

  • "Bill Felt used."

    this is amazing and hilarious

  • i wanna marry Don
