Hmmm I'm gonna disagree BSN. According to NASCAR's records on its website, Earnhardt won this race. Every big name driver that competed throughout the year was also in the race, including Waltrip, Elliott, Wallace, and Yarborough, etc.
When Talladega was built, Goodyear and Firestone (who as in NASCAR at that time) didn't have a tire built for the speeds they were running, which were faster than they ran at Daytona. A number of drivers called on NASCAR to postpone the race till the track could be repaved or a better tire could be develop. Bill France refused to reschedule the race, and most of the top drivers sat it out. Bobby Isaac was the only big name driver to run that race, and Richard Brickhouse won it... Hope that helps

Ok BSN, you are right, haha. You were talking about the race in 1969. Correct you are that there was a driver's boycott.

Brooks won just that one race that they mentioned ('73 Talledega 500). He passed away last year.

Dick Brooks was a car owner for a while after he retired from driving, and was a pit reporter for the Motor Racing Network for a number of years...
