I dont believe she is referring to "shapeshifiting" but rather alluding to the fact that essentially (we and all other creatures begin with) equla animal characteristics and that we can, by choice, tap into those characteristics to aide us in this life. As humans we aim to transcend those characteristics but many fail to do so thus become extinct. The R-Complex (repitilian) portion of the brain (stem) is found in human beause we all begin the same, thus we able to take on animal characteristic
