Although I think I have the message in this spoken word, I want to know what it means to african americans and how they can relate to it. So what do you understand from this?
@TejasM14 Well this is something I'm sure all Blacks including myself have battled with internally. It seems to not matter how educated, achieved or well accomplished I may become I will forever be a nigga/nigger in America's eyes.
It reminds me as a Black man not to forget my ancestor's history in this country and to remain true to self no matter my current surrounds
@eier cuz assimilating meant that he would have to conform to the american culture and pretty much leave and forget where he actually came from. thats how harsh "assimilation" was back then when african american rights were non existent :S
@lolabeauty02 But he's talking about nowadays, where I thought assimilating was a good thing. You don't have to be an "uncle tom" to get along with white people. Both black people and white people have to assimilate toward each other for them to get along and live side by side instead of in separate communities. Isn't that what everyone (aside from white and black nationalists) wants?
@eier im an Asian 16 year old boy. I would love to have that. To be accepted by all races as an equal. But the truth is, life just isn't that way. I live everyday through highschool, through life being the end of at least one racist joke or remark. Old and young, i have been discriminated by white people everywhere. They call me an immigrant, say i don't have a passport. I was born in Oregon, USA. I have loved my home and everything about it. I do hope we can all realize equality.
@boblet99 Dont even worry about it. I'm asian/pacific islander so I know what you're going through. You're born in the states but you still carry the culture and face from your ancestors and because of peoples ignorance they speak only what they know. You have to realize that high school isn't close to being a mature adult yet, even in college drunk assholes still speak ignorance. But it gets better in college because everyone gets pussy and groups get mixed up with difference ethnicitys.
@eier (I'm just gonna jump in here and add my 2 cents.) Assimilation in a lot of black communities still means acting like a man of the status quo/whitewashing your insides/making yourself more palpable for the middle class white majority so what the poet is talking about is still a very big issue in the black community. Assimilate doesn't mean get along- Assimilate brings to the mind images of a spy. An alien- someone pretending to get along.
@SpongecakeSuds No it doesn't. Like how bout we just stop going to jail, dropping out of school, and make something of ourselves, and then blaming the white man for everything? You can be successful and still, "remember where you came from," whatever that is even supposed to mean
@bigdawgdl I never said one couldn't be successful and still remember where they came from (Which normally amounts up to Noblesse oblige but especially in respect to your community. ) and I don't recall blaming the 'white man' for anything. The term 'assimilation' still implies that, as blacks, we aren't a part of normal American society and must adapt to fit in when, black Americans (along with many other minorities) are just as ingrained into the American identity as whites are.
wow....wow..wow.wowagain....im sitting in school with tears in my eyes now....thats what makes and educated black man so powerfull...that strong nigga inside of us
this is too powerful. I can relate to this because i have always been called the oreo and i have always had a part of me that wanted to just show "the nigga in me" but the nerd i am is so prevalent.
