I have written both metal songs and rap songs and they are both hard to write. With the guitar I find it easier because I feel one with the guitar. My mind thinks it and my hand plays it. With the digital stuff it's harder in my opinion. When I think of a riff for the guitar I can act it out immidiately and it's done. But on computer software I have to work for hours to get it to sound the way I want it to because the process is more complicated. If it's black metal I can write a song in 5 mins.
@suspendmeassholes : D Yes, I too can create a black metal song in 5 mins, but it won't be any good, and I'm sure neither is the one you created in 5mins, If you think composing is too easy, add some orchestrations into it, harden up your drum beat, create a new melody for some part of the song and stuff.. In my opinion a written song is never ready.. I have a couple of songs I've been working on for months and I only have the intro that I'm satisfied with. Good luck with your composing stuff.

I moved on to melodic death metal and some Thrash metal. Now that was just a whole new level of playing, had to learn sweeping and stuff.

I'm a metal head, I will always be one. Any other true metal head will remain one. There is no video, or argument against metal, that anyone could ever make to change our opinion of metal. Metal is something that we feel, the songs each metal head likes are not chosen as in: "I will like this song now." @pennyroyalteaNIRVANA Growling is such a hard vocal, for lack of a better word, trick to do. Anyone can do it, but most people do it wrong and end up destroying their vocal chords. If done properly it actually takes considerable concentration and strength, just like singing. It is definitely an acquired taste, but it does take talent. I have been playing death metal for almost 6 years and still cannot growl that well. Try doing it for an hour properly and see how hard it is.

It does take skill to write effective rhymes and blend them into a smooth rap song. Ice Cube is a great example of what skilled rap music is.

There is Metal you can dance to quite easily. Powerman 5000, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Rammstein are the immediate ones that come to mind. There are more, but these are also the best examples. Just listen to "Supernova Goes Pop" by Powerman 5000 or "Du Hast" by Rammstein and tell me they don't get your toe tapping.
I love both metal and rap, both are amazing genres in their own right. I do not see why people say either of them sucks. Doing that is pointless and shows just how ignorant that person is.

I think metal has become the preeminent sound of rock. And its overused. I like some metal bands, but the ones that are creative... and not always emphasizing on speed and complexity.
I think rock is about sounding/being authentic. But metal just exceeds the genuine sound of a band by sweeping, and pressing your fingers on each string without much strumming involved.
Think of it this way. Metal is a "say and do" kind of sound. What you hear is what its meant to sound like through everyone's ears. There's not enough intricate meaning. The emotions are too straightforward. Like the guitar is saying "This is your time to be sad".
Its just cheesy shit, really. Anyone who believes "the faster, the harder, the heavier and the more of it's physicality" is better... has a cheesy, simple-minded, barefaced taste in music. With no artistic magnitude.
All I will say is that both genres have good and bad artists.To find the good stuff, you need to turn off the radio, and look to the underground or back a few decades.
In all my honesty though, Rap and Metal are the same, they require planning for the music and lyrics and such, and they require talent (Yes, rap requires beat, tone, and breath.) And such.
you should have shown some of the newer metal, its the older metal that most people dont like, no effence, but the majority of metal fans like to listen a mixture of all types of metal, like older powermetal, and newer nu-metal (slipknot, korn)
Nice video response, totally agree. People lost track of what good music is, fact is that more than half the population don't play an instrument or have talent. Therefore they don't know the difference between talent and total BS. Sad really. And when I say good, it doesn't specifically aim at metal, many people search for different things. It can range from lyrics to progressions, melody, simplicity or (in my case) complexity... That's why many metalheads listen to classical and jazz!
you know what gets me? there are a TON of metal musicians who end up in music academies and such before quitting to, you know, tour with their awesome band.... but then most rappers come from where? oh yeah, the ghetto (or at least make their image look like they do).... and guess what? i play many instruments, and i play metal because it is the HARDEST and most complicated genre to play.

i remember as a kid, i would listen to headbangers ball AND mtv raps every friday. now everything is generalized, if youre a metal fan you CANT like hip hop, and if youre a hip hop fan you CANT like metal. i say bollocks. youre not a music fan if you cant open your mind, and youre not a metalhead if you think a7x and bullet for my valentine are good bands. just wanted to put it out there.

DREAM THEATER FTW! Im a guitar player and I cant even play what Petrucci was playing lol. Also about the metal being growling and no talent and anyone can do it, sure anyone can growl but can you do it for and entire concert without loosing your voice or having your throat bleed? I've tried growling before and I always end up loosing my voice. And yes anyone can rap, come on, even kids do it and become famous in an instant. I dont think that many kids could be in a metal band lol

Im also a keyboard player, my sister's boyfriend tried to show me that rap took talent, he showed me many song so I would try to learn them on the keyboard and it took me less than a minute to learn about 4 of them. Also rap is simple, havent you seen rap battles? People just come say things that are on their mind while someone else does a beat and they do it quick and easy.

@cheapcape Continued - many of today's mainstream heavy metal bands don't know what talent is. ALL music, including rap, was way more talented in the seventies and eighties. It does take skill to write effective rhymes and blend them into a smooth rap song. Ice Cube is a great example of what skilled rap music is.

If it were just banging, they wouldn't be able to play it live. And this video is the defense of metal, meaning any genre so you are mainly speaking of heavy metal or growling. I play violin and keyboards alittle bit(and i want to learn how to play guitar) and let me tell you, its not as easy as it looks. Its time consuming, but worth it. If it weren't for Thrash, Death Metal wouldn't Exist. Regardless of what's happened since, Metallica, Venom, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax made Thrash metal what it is.

There is Metal you can dance to quite easily. Powerman 5000, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Rammstein are the immediate ones that come to mind. There are more, but these are also the best examples. Just listen to "Supernova Goes Pop" by Powerman 5000 or "Du Hast" by Rammstein and tell me they don't get your toe tapping.

I think metal has become the preeminent sound of rock. And its overused. I like some metal bands, but the ones that are creative... and not always emphasizing on speed and complexity.
I think rock is about sounding/being authentic. But metal just exceeds the genuine sound of a band by sweeping, and pressing your fingers on each string without much strumming involved.
It doesn't sound genuine or authentic.
More like robots... like machines.

Think of it this way. Metal is a "say and do" kind of sound. What you hear is what its meant to sound like through everyone's ears. There's not enough intricate meaning. The emotions are too straightforward. Like the guitar is saying "This is your time to be sad".
Its just cheesy shit, really. Anyone who believes "the faster, the harder, the heavier and the more of it's physicality" is better... has a cheesy, simple-minded, barefaced taste in music. With no artistic magnitude.

Nice video response, totally agree. People lost track of what good music is, fact is that more than half the population don't play an instrument or have talent. Therefore they don't know the difference between talent and total BS. Sad really. And when I say good, it doesn't specifically aim at metal, many people search for different things. It can range from lyrics to progressions, melody, simplicity or (in my case) complexity... That's why many metalheads listen to classical and jazz!
