  • i like at the drive ins version better this is good tho

  • this is nice it give an appropriate feel to the music i am not certain if this is homemade art or the literal video but it complement the song.

  • and i'm not happy and i'm not sad.....

  • News of the World - R.I.P!

  • wonderful song. Its strange the quintessential english band and all the lads are of irish descent. A genius combination.

  • #1 smiths song in my opinion :)

  • eres el mejor

  • bella

  • Sound Advice 27.

  • Probably one of Morrissey's bleakest-ever lyrics (with quotes from Shelagh Delaney's 'A Taste Of Honey') about an unplanned, unwanted baby. Elegaic guitar from Johnny Marr. A stunning but chilling combination.

  • wow the pictures are genious

  • one of the best

  • The Smiths = Pure English atmosphere. :)

  • as of the start of this post, it appears that 6 people suffer from Justin Beiber syndrome and should go be faggots elsewhere.

  • @coptersoisoi you're a homophobic dinosaur? :(

  • @emersontotalyconfuse Well thanks for jumping the gun with such a stupid, blanketed statement. It's a bit sophmoric of me to say but it's more of a meme then a reflection of my feeling towards an entire group of people in which think independently of one another, regardless of their lifestyle. Now go play preacher somewhere else you pretentious little emo

  • @coptersoisoi i LOVE Smiths-with The Cure,Joy Division, old Legiao Urbana, old U2,the best bands of all times. Go for my channel/page and you will see how much emo i am! I.Y.W.F.W.W.G.F!!! IF YOU WANT FIGHT WE WILL GO FIGHT!!! Justin Bieber is fuckin' sexy! Swallow This! excuse my bad english.

  • the smiths<3 oh how i love them

  • my favourite song for ever, the one y want when going under...................

  • Oh wow first time i had heard this song was from At the Drive-in and fell in love with it, Never knew it was origonally done by The smiths. Either way both versions are mind blowing.

  • This video was great and very relevant to the story of this song.

  • I like both versions, so fuck off and write some music.

  • This is one of my favorite songs by him... but i dont understand why you wanted "To avoid the obvious English/Victorian atmosphere" ??

  • Because we must. :-)

Take a look at my 'Suffer Little Children'-video for a more typical English atmosphere.

  • @Caligula138 Him? This is The Smiths not just Morrissey.

I'd like to add that the bassline in this is fantastic.

  • Wonderful illustrations, and a good tune.

    Well done.

  • Love this! thanks

  • cool video!

  • MORRISSEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • don't compare the smiths to anyone cos they are like no one and they never will be

  • wow wow dude never say THE VOLTA is shit they are the craziest mucicians out there today and i think the smiths and THE VOLTA are way two different styles and CEDRIC sings nothing like MORRISSEY

  • pfff you can compare them during the ATD-I era, but the Mars Volta is shit.

  • Amazing video, amazing song. Five stars and favourited.

  • The lyrics of this song are so haunting. I love it so much, the tune is superb.

  • Bixler-Zavala and Morrissey are both pretentious as hell, there, you can compare them.

    Also great drawings.

  • One of my favorite songs. Great Video.

  • A very creative and very original fan video for a great song. You are very talented.

  • Beautiful.

My favourite Smiths song.. A great video also to accompany great lyrics.

    Bless up!!

  • complicado pero al fin muy bueno ok,,,

  • yes nice drawings

  • Really? I always figured it was the young mother's version of 'baptism' before abandoning the baby... but whatever...

  • Listen closely. The first line is a dark quick tale of infanticide. Be thankful that you mother didn't do the same.

  • jeez, fucking hell, someone actually realized that as well. it's not so difficult to pick apart the lyrics. In fact, the lyrics are quite specific. Thanks for getting it.

  • The Smiths were comprised of amazing talent and it was their musical chemistry that allowed this phenom of a band to make such a lasting impression.. they were collective geniuses.

  • the world will never listen. im not happy and im not sad

  • great video! And prodigyofpeace is an idoiot! Everyone knows Morrissey is GOD!

  • @prodigyofpeace1983 HAHA! name one!

  • ADTI should be ADHT

  • wow you yanks talk some shit

  • You really can't compare them with Mozz and Marr. Rubbish

  • I love The Smiths, but At The Drive-In's cover is better. Just my opinion of course. Just seems to me that Morrissey is rushing the words, where Cedric slowed down a bit to match better with the music. Again, love The Smiths. Just feel ATDI did a better version.

  • not even close guy ...please. three thumbs down should tell u something

  • What a response. Thats was pretty harsh.... i guess u took my comment like u take prodigys dick... HARD

    =)

  • Cedric Bixler, can't sing where as Morrissey can.

  • Two different styles of singing, two different eras.

You can't compare Morrissey to Bixler-Zavala.

  • Actully you can.

  • @prodigyofpeace1983 Holy Shit! you actually think that Cedrics version of this song is better!? It has to be The WORST cover ive ever heard of any Smiths song! its a horrible joke!

  • @Caligula138 Ahaha, you're wrong. Good cover. Not better, but good. Prick.

  • @CyggyStardust You are 20 years old... You just started listening to The Smiths a couple years ago i bet... So you know nothing.

  • @Caligula138 Does it say I'm 20? Hm. Actually 18. But fuck you if you think age has anything to do with it. They're one of my favorite bands, and so is At the Drive-In. You're an asshole for thinking that I'm somehow lesser than you due to liking ATDI's cover as well.

  • hey man you kind of suck ass

  • @somcop13 you used to be a sweet boy...

  • kill yourself

  • @Caligula138 : The Smiths are legendary and one of the greatest bands that ever formed. At The Drive was great in their own right and their music was emblematic in their specific era. Having said that, of all of The Smiths' stellar songs, this has always been one of my preferred. The melody of this song has a subtle beauty all it's own and its poignant lyrics are soul piercing.

  • This corresponds very nicely with the song. Develops it's own magic.

  • best song ever

  • wow great video i almost cried!

  • a shoeless child on a swing

  • I'M NOT HAPPY AND IM NOT SAD

  • SMITHS! . . . that is all that needs to be said

  • THE SMITHS would be more accurate xxx

  • eh hem well excuse me! lol

  • your drawings are good.

  • ANDY ROUREK Your Bass Lines R So Dark & Sublime, soul piercing!!!!!

  • nice work. pat yourself on the back for me

  • Brilliant! One of my favorite songs by The Smiths & your visual interpretation is captivating, Thank you.

  • woooooooooooooooooooooooow.

  • Magnífica

  • A Taste of Honey is set in Salford in northwestern England in the 1950s. It tells the story of Jo, a seventeen-year-old working class girl, and her mother, Helen, who is presented as crude and sexually indiscriminate. Helen leaves Jo alone in their new flat after she begins a relationship with Peter, a rich lover who is younger than her. At the same time Jo begins a romantic relationship with Jimmy, a black sailor. He proposes marriage but then goes to sea, leaving Jo pregnant and alone.

  • Great song. The lyrics are very interesting in this one. I personally think it's about a girl giving up a child. She refuses to have an abortion: "a grown man of twenty-five,he said he'd cure your ills, but he didn't and he never will".

Morrisey tries to indicate how the mother spends the rest of her life wondering what's happened to her baby.

  • god i love this. reminds me of hot summers and driving thru towns and listening to this. hot rain storms. the smiths get to me. its in the soul. hehe seriously.

5*** and faved. thank you for this. xx

  • Did you do those drawings?

  • yes.

he's an art teacher in my school.

he's really good and a great guy. literally and figuraly.

  • Good.

  • Great songand well done on the video.

  • Either way, still well done (not intending to be sarcastic)

  • Song About Dumping a Baby in Dumpster (so to speak) - very well done

  • Not quite. It's relates to a play/film (A Taste of Honey ) - as quite a few of The Smiths songs do. It's worth watching the film if you like the song... will make more sence to you then.

  • Done a bad thing, doesnt make me happy or sad, ...... Save your life cuz you only have one!!

  • i thought i would never sleep again,

  • that's the irony

  • Great job...and a great video

  • you just made this song even better :)

  • Heel erg mooi, bijzonder, geweldig, blablabla...

    (Kon ik ook maar iets)

  • mooi gemaakt!

  • Very beautiful video to a beautiful song...

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO INSPIRATIONAL

  • Classic Smiths track!! Morrissey and Marr at their best!! Awesome job on the video, by the way!

  • Your artwork is beautiful.

  • He's my teacher at school :D

  • great job on this video.

  • i will never sleep again!

  • I thought that once and i ended up in therapy, seriously not reccomended

  • It's a good video. The lyrics are very blunt (even for The Smiths). Marr's riffs are brilliant, funky yet apt. It's always the song I gravitate towards when listening to 'Hollow' on my own.

  • this song is beyond amazing. i cant even explain how it makes me feel

  • This is really terrific artwork, and it goes really well with the song.

  • THE BEST

  • Great vid bart. I love your artwork. Did you use markers to paint that?

  • Nah I'm not trying to be a twat or anything, it's just a lot of their songs seem wrong when this sort of stuff is done to em. Maybe im too traditional. Heh you noticed my slight germanicized version of 'Englisch'.

  • Video totally detracts from the song. Being British I usually like things of foreign origin but I do have to draw the line at the Smtihs. Manchester, England is where this starts and ends. And I live in Brum! I've said it before but you have to be english to REALLY get this. Such poetics are wasted on those who are illiterate in Englisch.

  • AbsoluteShambles, who are 'The Smtihs'? I made this video to a song by 'The Smiths'. Just kidding...

I just wanted to use a new angle for the visuals to this song: I've loved this song for 20 years now and I actually know what it's about... but why do we always have to do what others expect? A real Smiths fan surely could never be that boring. By the way, I'm quite familiar with the 'Englisch' language, thank you. And thanks for commenting.

  • lol u told him :)

  • Great job...and a great video.....a new twist on a great song....would never have expected it but like it.

  • I like it. Thanks.

  • adoro esta musicaaa,,,,,,la amooo

  • soulful song best ever!

  • I agree, it's funny how certain people gravitate towards different songs, I know a lot of smiths fans who all have a different favourite smiths song and personally this is probably my fav

  • just speaks to my soul this song does

  • wow man, you did a really, really good job with those pictures

    way to be different

  • Thanks, pal. I reckon you're a real Picasso yourself. At least you've got nice taste in music...

  • Pal, The Smiths with an African theme .. makes no sense at all. Some of the drawings are good though.

  • So because it's the smiths it needs to take place in Manchester? Get real.

Don't listen to these two ignoramuses, thought it was an interesting choice, good work.

  • considering that morrissey pretty much is a racist, yes!

  • all mankind is racist but most people deny it and therefore never understand or learn about it.Condemnation ,justification only strengthen it OR AN IDEALISTIC APPROACH is a form of excape ,like hope and fantasy from what you actually are.The enemy is within ones self not out there.

  • This is an amazing song coupled with an amazing video.

  • the sound 's melted with the thoughts

  • this song makes me see a dark night with neon tress and chalk glowy colored lakes, idk that's what i see when i hear this haha

  • Wow...Awesome song...Great lyrics..great song...And At the drive in did a amazing job covering it..but nothing beats the original..

  • Wonderful art. Congratulations.

  • Perfect song, beautiful art, 5 stars, man. That's what I call talent. *fist bumps*

  • Fantastic visuals, props to you.

  • this song is beautiful. its makes me feel.

  • this song paints amazing images in my head, the guitar alone makes me see grey skies and sidewalk

  • your stoned then lol jk good comment though

  • Its impossible selecting the best ever Smiths track!!! this would be a top runner though. Moz has such a way with words.... One small lyrical line sums up all the things you want to say or express but dont know how to.

  • Very very nice. I am a fan of your work.

  • my favorite smiths song is Hand in Glove and Girl Afraid this song also pwns though and idk how "louder than bombs" in my opinion their best album is all outtakes

  • great great great great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he has been my life since 1988, my man respects that pure poetry

  • It's hard to choose but i think this is my favourite song by The Smiths...i love them.

  • great video. love this song

  • Excellent! This is beautiful!

  • one of their best songs ever

  • Well done.

I recommend reading Shelagh Delaney's play, "A Taste of Honey," to see where Morrissey found inspiration for this song.

  • The line "the dream is gone but the baby is real" is lifted directly from the play.

  • That is very true. Wonderful play. Funny, too.

"I dreamt of you last night..." and "...a river the color of lead" are also memorable lines that Morrissey obviously found to be important.

  • Stunning work. Perfect for the song - a rarely mentioned classic from the Morrissey/Marr catalogue.

  • I didn't know it was rarely mentioned. How can this be?! It's so feckin' brilliant!

Second favorite Smiths song. Thanks for sharing this, bartproost.

  • what's your favourite?

  • Asleep.

  • I like How Soon Is Now.
