Probably one of Morrissey's bleakest-ever lyrics (with quotes from Shelagh Delaney's 'A Taste Of Honey') about an unplanned, unwanted baby. Elegaic guitar from Johnny Marr. A stunning but chilling combination.

Morrissey is not God & you're the idiot cause I never stated facts, just an opinion. Tons of better singers & musicians than Morrissey & The Smiths. I love The Smiths, but I have heard better versions of their songs by other artists.
I love The Smiths, but At The Drive-In's cover is better. Just my opinion of course. Just seems to me that Morrissey is rushing the words, where Cedric slowed down a bit to match better with the music. Again, love The Smiths. Just feel ATDI did a better version.
@prodigyofpeace1983 Holy Shit! you actually think that Cedrics version of this song is better!? It has to be The WORST cover ive ever heard of any Smiths song! its a horrible joke!
@Caligula138 Does it say I'm 20? Hm. Actually 18. But fuck you if you think age has anything to do with it. They're one of my favorite bands, and so is At the Drive-In. You're an asshole for thinking that I'm somehow lesser than you due to liking ATDI's cover as well.
@CyggyStardust You being 18 just strengthens my point ... You dont even know who you are yet. but i can tell you one thing about yourself... You have shitty taste.
@Caligula138 : The Smiths are legendary and one of the greatest bands that ever formed. At The Drive was great in their own right and their music was emblematic in their specific era. Having said that, of all of The Smiths' stellar songs, this has always been one of my preferred. The melody of this song has a subtle beauty all it's own and its poignant lyrics are soul piercing.
A Taste of Honey is set in Salford in northwestern England in the 1950s. It tells the story of Jo, a seventeen-year-old working class girl, and her mother, Helen, who is presented as crude and sexually indiscriminate. Helen leaves Jo alone in their new flat after she begins a relationship with Peter, a rich lover who is younger than her. At the same time Jo begins a romantic relationship with Jimmy, a black sailor. He proposes marriage but then goes to sea, leaving Jo pregnant and alone.
Great song. The lyrics are very interesting in this one. I personally think it's about a girl giving up a child. She refuses to have an abortion: "a grown man of twenty-five,he said he'd cure your ills, but he didn't and he never will".
Morrisey tries to indicate how the mother spends the rest of her life wondering what's happened to her baby.
god i love this. reminds me of hot summers and driving thru towns and listening to this. hot rain storms. the smiths get to me. its in the soul. hehe seriously.
Not quite. It's relates to a play/film (A Taste of Honey ) - as quite a few of The Smiths songs do. It's worth watching the film if you like the song... will make more sence to you then.
It's a good video. The lyrics are very blunt (even for The Smiths). Marr's riffs are brilliant, funky yet apt. It's always the song I gravitate towards when listening to 'Hollow' on my own.
Nah I'm not trying to be a twat or anything, it's just a lot of their songs seem wrong when this sort of stuff is done to em. Maybe im too traditional. Heh you noticed my slight germanicized version of 'Englisch'.
Video totally detracts from the song. Being British I usually like things of foreign origin but I do have to draw the line at the Smtihs. Manchester, England is where this starts and ends. And I live in Brum! I've said it before but you have to be english to REALLY get this. Such poetics are wasted on those who are illiterate in Englisch.
AbsoluteShambles, who are 'The Smtihs'? I made this video to a song by 'The Smiths'. Just kidding...
I just wanted to use a new angle for the visuals to this song: I've loved this song for 20 years now and I actually know what it's about... but why do we always have to do what others expect? A real Smiths fan surely could never be that boring. By the way, I'm quite familiar with the 'Englisch' language, thank you. And thanks for commenting.
I agree, it's funny how certain people gravitate towards different songs, I know a lot of smiths fans who all have a different favourite smiths song and personally this is probably my fav
all mankind is racist but most people deny it and therefore never understand or learn about it.Condemnation ,justification only strengthen it OR AN IDEALISTIC APPROACH is a form of excape ,like hope and fantasy from what you actually are.The enemy is within ones self not out there.
